Prep talk: Division 1 baseball quarterfinals have top matchups
There are four big-time matchups Friday in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division 1 baseball playoffs. The intrigue involves which teams can win with No. 2 pitchers. Top-seeded Corona won with ace Seth Hernandez on Tuesday but now must get past Big VIII League rival Norco on the road with Ethin Bingaman pitching against freshman standout Jordan Ayala. This is the game the Panthers might be most vulnerable. Advertisement St. John Bosco, the Trinity League champion, is playing at Villa Park in a noon matchup. Villa Park defeated Aquinas on Tuesday. Los Alamitos is playing at Santa Margarita in a matchup of teams that didn't win league titles. Corona, Huntington Beach lose in tournament semifinals in North Carolina
Corona and Huntington Beach, the top two high school baseball teams in California, were beaten on Friday morning in the semifinals of the National High School Invitational in Cary, N.C., by two top teams from Florida. Corona suffered its first defeat after 15 consecutive victories in a 5-0 loss to Venice. Ethin Bingaman gave up four runs in the the fifth inning. The Panthers were limited to five hits by sophomore pitchers Kasen Poplin and August Backman. Huntington Beach was beaten by Jacksonville Trinity Christian 3-2 after giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an error. The Oilers took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh behind pitcher Tyler Bellerose. After two runners reached based with two outs, Ethan Porter was brought in. He walked the first batter to load the bases. A ground ball resulted in an error, allowing the tying and winning runs to cross home plate. Trent Grindlinger and Porter had consecutive RBI doubles for Huntington Beach (14-2). Both Southern California teams had to rise early because of the East Coast time change (the games began 10:30 a.m. EDT), which probably didn't help.

Ethin Bingaman delivered the walk-off two-run, two-out single on a 2-and-2 count. Before that, with a runner on first and two outs, Trey Ebel walked. Jesiah Andrade singled on a two-strike pitch to load the bases. Anthony Murphy, on a 3-and-2 count, drew a walk to make it 7-6. That's when Bingaman, during a nine-pitch at-bat, finally hit the ball on a line drive to left field to deliver victory. Corona started its No. 4 pitcher, Mason Sims, and now will have Seth Hernandez, Bingaman and Jason Gerfers set to pitch in the remaining games. Advertisement Huntington Beach 5, Brooklyn (N.Y.) Poly Prep Country Day 4: The Oilers got the walk-off win in the eighth inning on a fielder's choice in Cary, N.C. They trailed 3-2 going to the bottom of the seventh and tied the game on a sacrifice. Maverek Russell had two hits for La Mirada (13-3). St. John Bosco 5, Santa Margarita 3: James Clark continued his torrid hitting in Trinity League play with two hits and three RBIs for the Braves.
