Chris Eubank Jr spurred over the line against Conor Benn by the presence of his father

Chris Eubank Jr revealed that the desire to show how capable he is to his father – and the world – got him over the line in his grueling battle with Conor Benn. 30 years on from the last bout in the legendary rivalry between their fathers Chris Eubank Sr and Nigel Benn, Eubank Jr edged a unanimous decision victory over Benn at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the end of April. The clash more than lived up to the hype generated in the build-up, with the pair giving it their all after years of trash talking an inter-family rivalry. Such was the damage sustained by Eubank Jr that the victor was whisked off to hospital, where he spent days under the watchful eye of doctors. Eubank Jr, who stated that the main concern behind his hospital stay was dehydration after boiling down and having his weight limited by a rehydration clause, recently spoke of his experience of the bout on Steven Bartlett's Diary of a CEO podcast. Badly cut from the seventh round onwards, Eubank Jr somehow dug deep to reach the distance, whilst producing enough late on to preserve his scorecard lead. Explaining his thought process, Eubank Jr said: 'I wasn't willing to go the rest of my life knowing that I didn't give it my all, regardless of the cut, regardless of everything I was going through, I knew I just I had to do what I had to do to win. 'And my old man's there he's watching. He didn't believe I'll be able to do what I'm doing, he's been saying that for years. 'I've got to show him, I've got to show the world, I've got to show myself that I'm capable of great things, of going through things that 99.999% of human beings on this earth were not willing to go through, and that will live forever.' The risk and punishment was clearly worth the reward for Eubank Jr, who believes the subsequent high he has enjoyed could not be bought. 'And that's a beautiful feeling,' he restarted. 'A week after the fight, sitting here talking about it, there's no amount of money that can buy the feelings that I have now, and that is the genuine truth, how proud I am of what we achieved in that fight. 'It's priceless. It's something that you know on your deathbed in 60 years' time you're thinking about it, 'Yeah, I did that.' 'You can't get that from money. You can't get that from fame. YOU get that from years and years and years of graft, hard work and just being true, not cutting corners, not cheating. By not being a bully.' Mark Robinson/Matchroom Boxing Aside from an enthralling encounter inside the ring that captured the attention of the British public, the surprise appearance of Eubank Sr during Next Gen's arrival provoked an emotional response both inside the arena, and on social media. The Eubanks had been estranged for some years, with Senior lambasting the fight – and his son – in the build-up to the bout, labelling the event as dangerous due to the difference in weight classes and the limit on rehydration for his son. However, Eubank Jr revealed how a last-minute message from his father led to the public rekindling. He continued: 'I knew how hard it was for him to send me that text of 'Call me when you see this', because he doesn't do that. It's been years since he tried to have that contact with me. 'So I think if I just ignored it, then we wouldn't be sitting here talking about this amazing event that has unfolded. Because, make no mistake, him being there made it different. It made it something that will now go down in history. Movies are made about this type of stuff. 'If I go in there alone, it's just a fight, which would have been a great fight still, but to have that fantasy of a father and son coming together after going through so much, my brother passing away, all the stuff in the media, all the friction. To see that be able to be put to one side and to unite, to walk into that ring, it's an incredible thing. I get emotional thinking about it, because it was so unexpected. 'I had envisioned in my mind for the last two years, me walking to that ring alone. It never crossed my mind that my old man will be behind me. I envisioned walking to the ring alone, being booed, and getting into that ring and fighting with anger in my heart, that's what I thought that fight was going to be. What it turned out to be was, I'm walking to the ring, my old man is behind me, and for the first time in my whole career, I'm walking through a crowd and there's no boos.' Chris Eubank Sr reveals disguise he used to meet Jr in private on eve of Conor Benn fight

Chris Eubank Sr has revealed he sported a disguise to meet Jr the night before his win over Conor Benn, to keep his appearance a surprise until the final moment. Eubank Jr outpointed Conor Benn at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (26 April), winning a brilliant fight, 32 years after Sr and Conor's father Nigel rounded out their own rivalry. Advertisement Nigel was in Conor's corner as expected, but Eubank Sr had criticised the match-up as recently as the week of the fight, labelling it a 'disgrace' due to the weight disparity between the Britons. Benn, 28, went two divisions above his usual weight to face Eubank Jr, 35, at middleweight, while the latter was restricted by a rehydration clause. Yet the stadium erupted on Saturday night when the big screens showed Eubank Sr stepping out of a car with Jr, and now the elder Eubank has explained how things came together. The former world champion texted Eubank Jr the night before the bout, asking his son to call him once he was in private. 'Jr called, and he said, 'I didn't want to call, dad, because I can't hear anything negative,'' Sr explained on his YouTube channel. 'I said to Jr: 'Okay, alright, so where are you?' So, he explained... a Park Plaza. 'How am I going to get in?' Now, in my mind, you have the world's media there. Everyone's hanging around. Advertisement 'How am I going to get in? Okay, so I put on the disguise. The [Jr] saw me, he said, 'No one's going to recognise you.' Chris Eubank Jr in disguise (Call Chris Eubank via YouTube) 'You couldn't see me. I had an Issey Miyake coat on, which is down to literally your ankles. I had a hoodie, which is – if you will – the mod coat: the green mod coat, the coat they wore in the 1960s on their mopeds. 'Then I had a mask that went up and a cap. The shoes I wore were plimsolls, they were trainers. They're black.' Eubank Sr indeed went unrecognised as he met his son, setting up Saturday night's WWE-style reveal. On the night of the fight, Eubank Sr insisted he had 'always' planned to be present, in which Jr dealt Benn his first professional loss with three scorecards of 116-112. He did, however, require eye surgery. A rematch is on the cards for September, also at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Benn's promoter Eddie Hearn has said.

Chris Eubank Jr says father ‘slept on stretcher in hospital' after Conor Benn fight as bond grows

Chris Eubank Jr has opened up on how his relationship with his father, Chris Eubank Sr, has changed since last month's fight with Conor Benn. On 26 April, 32 years after Eubank Sr fought Nigel Benn for the second and final time, Jr outpointed Benn's son Conor at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The scintillating fight followed a chaotic build-up, during which Nigel stood by his son while Eubank Sr called his own son a 'disgrace'. Advertisement As such, it was a major surprise to see Eubank Sr arrive at the stadium with Jr on fight night, before the pair walked to the ring together. Eubank Sr recently explained how he and Jr, who had been estranged for some time, reconnected the night before the fight, and Jr has now delved deeper into their latest chapter. 'Since that night before the fight, every day since then it's been all love between me and my old man, which is incredible to think,' Eubank Jr said on Diary Of A CEO. 'I was in hospital for two days after the fight; he didn't leave the hospital. 'When I say he didn't leave the hospital, I mean he's sleeping on one of these stretchers outside my room, just in the hallway. That means everything to me. Regardless of the differences, and the things that have been said and done, a man who's gonna stay by his son like that... That's love. Chris Eubank Jr and Sr walk to the ring in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (PA Wire) 'It's been so long since I've had that type of feeling with him, and you only get one father. So, now we're gonna build and build and build, and I think our relationship is only gonna get stronger and stronger and stronger.' Advertisement In the months before the fight, in which Eubank Jr handed Benn his first professional loss, Jr publicly took issue with his father creating distance between them, saying it was no way for the older Eubank to behave following the deaths of Sr's son Sebastian and brother Simon Eubank in recent years. 'Regardless of what he said about me and about the fight, he was there when it mattered the most, and that means everything,' Eubank Jr said this week. 'As soon as he picked the phone up, there was a tone in his voice that I hadn't heard for years. 'It was a tone of happiness, lightness, joy. 'Hey, how you doing, son? What's going on? How you feeling? I know you've got a big day tomorrow, and... I wanna be there for you.' I heard that, and I was like: 'Is this a dream? This is Chris Eubank Sr I'm speaking to? Who is this?' Eubank Jr during his thrilling clash with Conor Benn (PA Wire) 'I envisioned walking to the ring alone, being booed, and getting into that ring and fighting with anger in my heart. That's what I thought that fight was gonna be. What it turned out to be was: I'm walking to the ring, my old man is behind me – is with me – and for the first time in my whole career, I'm walking through a crowd and there's no boos [...] I'm walking past people and I'm seeing tears in their eyes.' Advertisement After beating Benn 116-112 on all three scorecards, Eubank Jr was taken to hospital for surgery on a cut above his eye. 'There were moments in that hospital where I'm feeling... I caught myself in the mirror, I see my face is all puffed up, I've got this massive cut across my eye, my headache is crazy,' said the 35-year-old. 'I'm feeling sorry for myself. 'This is f****d up.' I've got my family around me, some of them are crying, [I'm thinking:] 'This is so bad.' 'I'm lying there, I've got my oxygen mask on, I can hear everything that's going on. We're in a ward, somebody gets wheeled into a room next to me. There's no walls, it's just sheets separating. 'Get me the morphine, get me the morphine.' They can't get you the morphine until they sign off on some stuff, so I'm waiting there. Eubank Sr hoists his son aloft after Jr's victory in front of 65,000-plus fans (Getty Images) 'Then I hear the doctors saying, 'We have to operate on him now, otherwise he's gonna die;' I heard that from the other room, and I thought: 'Oh, my God. I'm great. I'm blessed. I should not be feeling sorry for myself at all.' I knew I was in pain, but there's a guy next to me who's about to die.' Advertisement It is expected that Eubank Jr and Benn, 28, will square off again later this year, possibly returning to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a rematch in September. Eubank Jr has also been linked to a bout with super-middleweight king Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, though the Mexican icon will face Terence Crawford in September. Similarly, Benn has been linked to welterweight champion Mario Barrios, but the latter is due to fight a returning Manny Pacquiao in July. In Benn's fight with Eubank Jr, the former moved up two weights beyond his usual division of welterweight, meeting Jr at middleweight. The latter, however, was restricted by a rehydration clause.

Chris Eubank Jnr reveals emotional phone call with estranged father on the night before his victory over Conor Benn - as he admits the TRUTH behind shock reunion with boxing legend dad

Chris Eubank Jnr has revealed the details behind his dramatic reunion with his father, Eubank Sr, prior to his victory over Conor Benn. Eubank Jr finally settled the score with Benn after a bitter build-up as he claimed victory via unanimous decision in a fight of the year contender on April 26th. The fight itself was an epic affair, but the night had already sparked into life long before the opening bell when Eubank Sr and Jr arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium together, just days after Sr had branded his son 'a disgrace'. Eubank Sr had been angry with his son for boiling himself down to 160lbs to fight Benn, while also slapping his rival around the face with an egg at their launch press conference. He had vowed not to attend the fight, but then performed a remarkable U-turn and walked his son to the ring before watching on from ringside. Now, Eubank Jnr has lifted the lid on his shock reunion with his father and detailed a phone call with Sr one the eve of the fight. Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Eubank Jnr explained: 'On the subject of my father, regardless of what he said about me and about the fight, he was there when it mattered the most. 'And that means everything. I didn't know he was going to come. He called me. He texts me the day before the fight, the night before the fight. He said 'call me when you see this.' 'So, I saw the text and I thought you know what? We are less than a day away.... this is the night before the biggest fight of my life. 'A couple of hours go by, maybe nine, ten o'clock, I'm like 'you know what, I've been through so much s*** these last two months, what more could possibly be thrown at me?' At the end of the day, he's my old man. He's text me, I'm going to hear him out. 'So, I call him. I was about to go to sleep and I thought 'I'll call him.' As soon as he picked the phone up, there was a tone in his voice that I hadn't heard for years. It was a tone of happiness, likeness, joy, 'hey, how you doing son? What's going on? How're you feeling?' 'I said 'how am I feeling? When have you worried about how I'm feeling? I'm good dad, everything is cool. Just getting ready to go to sleep. Got a big day tomorrow.' He said 'yeah, I know you've got a big day tomorrow and I want to be there for you.'' Eubank Snr, just days after the bout, also revealed how he reached out to his son via text in order to wish him well for the fight. 'At 10 past eight on Friday night I sent him a message,' Eubank Sr revealed on his Call Chris Eubank YouTube channel. 'The message said: 'Call me when you're in private, please'. 'Maybe 10 past 10, I got a call back. Jr called and he said 'I didn't want to call, dad, because I can't hear anything negative'. In my mind you have the world's media there so I put on a disguise. 'When he saw me he said 'no one is going to recognise you'. You couldn't see me. I had an Issey Miyake coat on which is down to your ankles. I had a hoodie which is a green mod coat. The coat they wore in the 1960s on their mopeds. And then I had a mask that went up and a cap. The shoes I wore were plimsolls. 'He had booked me a room so we went up to the room and we sat and we spoke. These were my words to him: 'what do you want me to do, son? This is your show.' And he said lots of things have to change now because we had this set up. We had an orchestra, a rapper, and all were to substitute for me not being there. So when I came in, everything else went. The only thing that actually stayed was the orchestra.' Eubank Jr and Sr shared a number of memorable moments on the night, including arriving together, having a joint ringwalk, and them embracing after the final bell.

‘It was surreal' – Chris Eubank Jr opens up on ‘incredible' moment his dad joined him in shock move for Conor Benn fight

CHRIS EUBANK JR has opened up over the 'surreal' and 'incredible' moment his dad joined him for last month's win over rival Conor Benn. Eubank Jr emerged victorious from a bloody clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as both men put on a stunning show in front of 67,000 fans. 3 But the biggest shock of the night came before a punch had even been thrown. The build-up to the bout had seen Eubank Jr open up over his strained relationship with dad Eubank Sr. The iconic former boxing champion had previously said he did not approve of his son fighting the offspring of his own 90s rival, Nigel Benn. However, the two Eubanks amazingly put aside their issues moments before the fight as Sr escorted Jr to the ring, sending the crowd wild. And Eubank Jr has now opened up on the incredible moment, admitting that it gave him an extra boost after preparing the fight on his own. The PokerStars ace, who spoke exclusively to SunSport from their EPT Monte Carlo, said: 'Family is everything, you know? And the fact that even the last minute we all came together, it meant the world to me. 'Because I thought I was gonna be alone. I walked into that weigh-in alone in preparation for the fight. 'I saw Conor with all his team and his dad, and I knew in my heart, in my mind, I knew that that wasn't gonna be what I was gonna have on the night. 'So, listen, I'm gonna be alone on the night, I'm gonna be alone now, it's okay. Get used to it, kid. That was what was going on in my head. 'And for that to kind of switch at the last minute it was surreal, it was incredible. 'I was dying inside' - F1 fans stunned after Martin Brundle CONGRATULATES Conor Benn despite boxer losing to Eubank Jr 3 'And yeah, it's just nice to be, it's nice to do what you said you was gonna do. And to do something which the fans will remember for a long, long time. 'That's what it's all about. The fans are the ones that put us in these positions. So to be able to deliver to them, that's all the fighter can really dream for. And we did that.'
