Farrell rejoins Saracens on two-year deal

LONDON - Former England captain Owen Farrell will return to Saracens after spending one season with French club Racing 92, the English Premiership club said on Monday. The 33-year-old flyhalf, who spent 16 years at Saracens, has signed a two-year contract with the London club starting from next season. Farrell, who helped Saracens win six Premiership titles and three European Champions Cups, stood down from England duty after the 2023 World Cup saying he needed to do so for his mental health. "Saracens is my home and the opportunity to come back is one that excites me enormously," Farrell said in club statement. "Having watched from afar this season, it is clear to see that the club has incredible potential, and I can't wait to get back in the mix for the 2025-26 season." Farrell has made 256 appearances for Saracens, earned 112 England caps and played six tests for the British and Irish Lions. The former Saracens captain joined Racing last year on a two-year deal but form and injuries restricted him to 17 appearances for them. He was omitted from the Lions squad, coached by his father Andy Farrell, for this year's tour of Australia. "Owen has Saracens in his DNA; his competitive spirit is woven into the fabric of this club, and we are delighted he has chosen to come home," Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall said. Owen Farrell cuts short €1.6 million Racing deal to return to Saracens

FORMER ENGLAND CAPTAIN Owen Farrell is returning to Saracens after a single season in France with Racing 92, the English Premiership club announced. The 33-year-old fly-half, who has signed a two-year deal, previously had a 16-year spell at the London club, making his professional debut at the age of 17. In his first stint at Saracens, Farrell, who is England's record points-scorer, won six Premiership titles and three European Champions Cups. The former Saracens captain has made 256 appearances for the club, as well as 112 for England, and has won six Test caps for the British and Irish Lions 'Saracens is my home and the opportunity to come back is one that excites me enormously,' said Farrell. Advertisement 'Having watched from afar this season, it is clear to see that the club has incredible potential, and I can't wait to get back in the mix for the 25/26 season.' Farrell joined Racing in a blaze of publicity last year on a two-year deal, with local media reporting that he was earning €800,000 a year. But poor form and a series of injuries restricted him to just 17 appearances in all competitions, the last of which came in Racing's Challenge Cup semi-final defeat to Lyon at the start of May. In February, Racing owner Jacky Lorenzetti likened him to 'a snail going backwards' and it was no surprise that he was left out of the Lions squad, coached by his father, Andy Farrell, for their tour of Australia. Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall said Farrell has 'Saracens in his DNA'. 'His competitive spirit is woven into the fabric of this club, and we are delighted he has chosen to come home,' he said. 'He returns to a young group full of potential, players eager to learn, play and push for success. We know he will love being part of where this group, and this club, are headed.' Saracens finished sixth in the English Premiership last season, missing out on the playoffs. 'Tigers need evolution over revolution'

Former Leicester Tigers winger Leon Lloyd believes the club needs "evolution" - not revolution - to get them back to the top of English 47, returned to Welford Road this week as a non-executive director, 18 years after leaving to join made 260 appearances for the Tigers during a prolific period of success which saw them lift 11 trophies, including back-to-back European Champions Cups in 2001 and 2002."The key word I used when speaking to Tom (Scott - new chairman) and Peter (Tom - club president) and people on the board was around evolution," he told BBC Radio Leicester."It's not a case of wanting to evolve, we have to. We can't keep doing the same things over and over again and expect different results, and the board appreciates that."It's [about] taking steps to try to view and approach things differently as well." Lloyd hopes to be involved in finding a new head coach when Michael Cheika leaves at the end of the season, but does not feel sweeping change is climbed to third place in the Premiership, with six games left, after thrashing defending champions Northampton on Friday."If you look at what the team have been producing this year under Michael, I don't think we're that far away from being where we feel we should be as a club," Lloyd said."Things need to change and things need to evolve, but I don't think it's a case of throwing everything out of the bathtub and trying to figure out where to go from there because things are in a good spot."Injury forced Lloyd to retire aged 30, shortly after his move to Gloucester, and soon after that he turned down three offers of coaching roles, including with Leicester."I loved playing the game and contributing in that way, but I knew that coaching, to get that close and not be able to influence it the way I would like to influence it, wasn't for me," he said."It's taken a long time for me to fall back in love with the game."I've just finished some major commitments, including a PhD, and the timing for this opportunity to come along at a club which shaped who I am as an individual, it just seems like a great time."
