Evangel to break ground on new dorm

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — On Friday, April 25, Evangel University is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for its newest residential facility, Flood Hall. The outdoor event will take place on Evangel's campus in the west parking lot between AGFinancial Arena and Valor Courts at 10:45 a.m. When completed, Flood Hall will be 57,816 square feet and will house up to 224 students, making it the third largest residential building on campus, behind Burgess Hall and Lewis Hall. Students call on MSU to stand up for international students whose visas were revoked The university is calling this dorm state-of-the-art, as it will include movie, prayer and study rooms, as well as full ADA accessibility. Flood Hall adds to the list of projects on campus under the 'Here. Now.' campaign. It joins the renovation of Walther Hall, the construction of a lighted turf field, and the development of the Valor Center and Randy Rowden Training Facility. This is the first major building initiative on campus since the opening of the Ralph M. Riggs Administration Building in 2009. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Evangel University launches new program for student loans

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – As the costs of student loans continue to rise, students at Evangel University may find an easier way to lower the load. According to an Evangel University press release, the school is introducing the Valor Advantage Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) — a new benefit designed to ease the burden of student loan repayment for their graduates. Evangel is the first Springfield collegiate institution to offer a loan repayment assistance program to eligible incoming freshmen starting in Fall 2025, the release said. 'Our goal is to remove as many financial obstacles as possible for students who feel called to be here. For eligible students, LRAP is one of the tools we use to help make that possible' said Dr. Mike Rakes, President of Evangel University, in the release. Through this program, eligible students will receive help repaying their federal student, parent PLUS, and private alternative loans if their income after graduation is below $50,000, according to the release. The LRAP is offered at no cost to eligible students or families. The assistance will continue until the graduate's income exceeds $50,000 or until their loans are completely paid off, per the release. LRAP eligibility requirements: Have a Student Aid Index below $20,000 (determined by FAFSA) Sign the LRAP offer letter prior to beginning classes at Evangel Submit your $200 enrollment deposit Pursue a bachelor's degree at Evangel University and live in traditional undergraduate housing Graduate from Evangel Additionally, Evangel will offer Student Loan Insurance (SLI), an optional student loan insurance coverage plan. This plan provides an option for students who do not meet the eligibility for LRAP and will be offered to current students who have not yet started their junior year. If eligibility is met, this plan will provide repayment assistance if a student's post-graduation income is less than $50,000, per the release. 'Evangel is proud to invest in our students — especially those with high need — by offering LRAP as a form of loan repayment support,' said Chris Belcher, Vice President for Enrollment Management, in the release. 'It reflects our ongoing commitment to making Christ-centered education attainable.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Fair Grove hires new police chief, the city's fifth in 5 years

Fair Grove has a new police chief, again. The newest man to be appointed to the job will be the fifth to serve in that role since 2020. Mayor Thomas Voorhis announced in a Facebook post that Mark Riggin has been hired as police chief. Riggin served as the chief of the Willard School Police Agency, establishing the K-12 school-based law enforcement program. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree from Evangel University. Riggin graduated from the United States Army Military Police School in 1989. He served in the New Jersey and Missouri Army National Guard as a military policeman, according to the announcement. After his military service, Riggin joined the Springfield Police Department, where he served for more than 24 years. During his time at Willard School Police, he participated in developing policies and procedures that enhanced safety within the school environment. In his latest role as the school police program coordinator with the Missouri School Boards Association, Riggin worked on school safety initiatives, providing training and support to K-12 safety coordinators and law enforcement personnel across the state, according to the release. Riggin is filling a vacancy left by the departure in late January of the former chief, Roy Howell, which included a $32,800 severance. Prior to his resignation, Howell was placed on administrative leave. While the full circumstances behind the separation have not been disclosed, records obtained by the News-Leader previously pointed to a doorbell camera incident and the subsequent investigation that followed directed by Howell. Voorhis told the News-Leader the city received roughly 30 applications for the job posting. The top 10 applicants were interviewed by the city's Police Committee and the Personnel Committee. The base salary for the position was set at $70,000, compared to $58,500 Howell was making, according to previous News-Leader reporting. More: Fair Grove police chief resigns, receives $33,000 severance after administrative leave Howell was hired March 2024 after a shakeup at the Fair Grove Police Department at the end of 2023 that left the department with only one fully trained officer. He was able to rebuild the staff to only one vacancy. A staff exodus that occurred with previous chiefs' departures did not occur when Howell was placed on leave or after he resigned.
