Suspect drowns after allegedly fleeing police

HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – A suspect has reportedly drowned after allegedly fleeing from Evansville Police. EPD states officers were called to Marina Pointe at 850 LST Drive Saturday morning in reference to a stolen vehicle report. Officials say while the report was being completed, the suspect returned to the scene and fled toward a tree line as officers approached. That was when the suspect reportedly fell down an embankment and into the water, struggling to swim before going under. EPD states an officer went into the water to try and find and rescue the suspect, but due to poor lighting and water conditions, the suspect was not located. A water rescue was called and the Evansville Fire Department responded. The suspect was able to be found after a multiple hour search. The suspect was pronounced dead. Officials say based on the location of recovery, the death investigation will be handed by Henderson. The suspect's identity is not being released at this time. EPD commended EFD for the measures taken. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

'Please stop': Trash dumping and theft on the rise at Evansville Rescue Mission

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – If you ask any thrift store shopper, most will tell you 'one person's trash is another person's treasure'. But in the last several weeks outside of the Evansville Rescue Mission Thrift Store, the treasures have been stolen while the trash is left behind. 'I think the only thing we would say is, 'please stop'.' That is the plea from Eddie Rapp with the Evansville Rescue Mission after what he calls a 'drastic' increase in reports of individuals dumping large amounts of trash where donations are collected. 'Not only is trash being dumped,' explains Rapp, 'they're actually going through and picking items they want for themselves and leaving. And what's interesting is it occurs at 2 in the morning, 3 in the morning, 10 o'clock at night, so there's no one here where we can assist them to really help with the donations, so we know the intent isn't to be a positive donor for the community.' EPD calls Bitcoin scams a 'growing trend' Some of the incidents have been captured by the store's surveillance camera. Rapp says the increase over the past two months forced the Rescue Mission to coordinate with Evansville Police, placing a neighborhood surveillance vehicle outside of the donation drop-off. 'It's just gotten to the point where it literally encompasses our entire donation facility, the outside platform, our donation bins,' says Rapp. 'Yeah, it's visually discerning, for sure.' Not just visually discerning, but costly, too. 'I think what probably isn't realized is that costs us a lot of money. It fills up dumpsters that we have to have removed, it's our resources, and ultimately it's exhausting to our staff to have to deal with it on a daily basis,' says Rapp. 'It's kind of a double loss: not only are you not getting the donation to have the impact they desired in the first place, but you're also costing money that's taking away funds that could be used to help somebody.' The Rescue Mission is asking residents to only drop off donations during operating hours of 8 am to 6 pm, and to not leave items next to their bins. Evansville Police say there are no updates on the search for these individuals. Violent convicted felon charged with stalking in Evansville

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – A convicted violent felon is facing multiple charges, including stalking and firearm charges, after authorities say he used an Apple AirTag on a woman's vehicle to track her activities. According to an affidavit, a woman reported to Evansville Police on April 13 that she believed an unknown female had placed an Apple AirTag on her vehicle while she was at a restaurant over the weekend. Evansville Police say they were not able to find the device on her vehicle, but an extra patrol was requested around the woman's home. Suspect accused of stealing Chandler Police car during pursuit now in jail The next day, authorities say the woman reported a man came to her home claiming that his camera bag was stolen from him, and the bag contained an Apple AirTag that was shown on the woman's vehicle. However, the woman told authorities the man did not ask her if she knew about the camera bag, but instead reached underneath the car and removed a magnetic box before leaving the area in an SUV. Police say they were able to identify the man who was at the woman's home as Mark Alan Schenk, 50, of Evansville, by comparing surveillance footage with a database of open sources on the internet. While reviewing court documents, detectives say they learned a woman had submitted a petition for a protective order against Schenk, who she said had been stalking her and waiting outside of her employer on multiple occasions. After making contact with the woman who submitted the petition, authorities say she admitted to placing the magnetic box under another vehicle in order to prevent Schenk from tracking her. The woman also reportedly told authorities that she received a text from Schenk after she located the AirTag that said 'I bet you won't find any other ones.' Federal inmate sentenced to life for murdering cellmate in Terre Haute prison Evansville Police were able to execute a search warrant at Schenk's home, and he was brought into custody without incident. During the search, authorities say they found a revolver inside his bag, a GPS device, an Apple AirTag attached to strong magnets and narcotics, including methamphetamine and psilocybin mushrooms. Schenk was previously convicted for dealing a narcotic drug in 2006, qualifying him as a serious violent felon and prohibiting him from possessing a firearm. During questioning, police say Schenk admitted to placing the AirTag on the vehicle owned by the woman who had submitted a protective order against him. He also reportedly admitted to sending messages to her and waiting outside of her employer. However, Schenk denied knowing that the revolver was a real firearm. Schenk was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on Wednesday, and charged with stalking, two counts of unlawful surveillance, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, possession of a schedule drug and possession of methamphetamine. He is being held without bond. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Evansville man arrested for allegedly raping two women

HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – An Evansville man is facing two counts of rape involving two different women. According to an affidavit, a detective with Evansville Police talked with a victim at Holly's House where she said on the night of January 28, she was having some drinks with another woman. The detective learned that they allegedly agreed to go to a male's house they met via Snapchat. The male was later identified as Martez Wilkes, 24. The detective also reportedly learned that both women gave very similar testimonies in which forceable sexual actions were made from Wilkes to the women. Wilkes allegedly declined to speak with authorities and requested an attorney. An affidavit says Wilkes was also arrested in September 2024. Wilkes made an appearance in court Thursday afternoon. During the hearing, he maintained his innocence. His next court date is scheduled for May 8 at 9 a.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
