Rakshit Chaurasia, a 23-year-old law student from MS University, who crashed his friend's Volkswagen Virtus car into three vehicles on March 12 and killed one woman in Gujarat's Vadodara, was reportedly driving at the speed of 140 kmph through the busy street on the night of the police and was allegedly under the influence of a cocktail of drugs, according to police. Chaurasia was driving the speeding Volkswagen that collided with several two-wheelers and killed Hemali Patel, while injuring seven others. In the video that surfaced on social media and went viral, Chaurasia was seen stepping out of the car after the accident in a seemingly intoxicated state and started shouting, 'Another round, another round!" Despite claiming that he was not drunk, police had earlier said that the primary report of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Gandhinagar that tested the blood sample of the accused revealed he had smoked marijuana. His friends in the car also tested positive for drug use. On Monday, the Vadodara city police shared new details with a court while opposing the bail plea filed by Chaurasia, who has been in judicial custody since March 17. The affidavit filed by the Karelibaug police station states that the Event Data Recorder (EDR) report by Volkswagen confirmed that the car was being driven at 140 kmph at the time of the accident, according to The Indian Express. 'To gain access to the data of the car in the possession of the accused at the time of the incident, the car was sent to the Volkswagen company showroom and a report was received after being analysed in Germany (car manufacturer headquarter). The report stated that the speed of the car at the time of the accident was 140 km per hour, as per the details extracted from the Event Data Recorder (EDR) of the car," read the affidavit. The document also said that the blood samples of Chaurasia and two co-accused Praanshu Chauhan and Suresh Bharwad were collected and sent to a forensic laboratory in Gandhinagar, which confirmed the presence of Tetra-Hydro Cannabinol (THC) and Codeine in the bloodstream and determined that the accused was under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident. All three were booked in a separate case related to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The police said Chaurasia, being a law student well-versed with the legal process, would not only 'hamper the trial" but also pose 'a risk that the accused will intimidate witnesses and destroy evidence" if granted bail. Referencing the 'another round" video, the police said Chaurasia's conduct was that of jubilation, 'as if he had achieved a feat", instead of remorse or reaching out to victims. They also pointed out that he would be absent from court hearings, being a resident of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
