Now - after a series of talks with the club's new hierarchy - he's now been told the job is his. Italian coach Davide Ancelotti was interviewed along with a number of others including Steven Gerrard. But Martin has convinced new Gers chairman Andrew Cavenagh he's the man to lead the club's revival. Cavenagh became involved in the process after 49ers Enterprises advisor Gretar Steinsson and Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell did the initial groundwork. It became a battle between Martin and Ancelotti with many Gers supporters hoping the Italian would be named. But the bold decision has been made to give the former Scotland defender his next chance in management. Martin knows the club having had a short loan stint with Gers in 2018. Rangers manager hunt latest as Ibrox chiefs step up process to whittle down shortlist for top job
A decision on the preferred candidate has yet to be communication and further talks could take place in the days ahead The Rangers managerial hopefuls are sitting by their phones as they await a fresh update from Ibrox chiefs. Gers are set to step up the appointment process this week as they seek to whittle down the shortlist of contenders vying to replace Philippe Clement. Early talks have already taken place with Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin, while it's emerged over the weekend that former Feyenoord boss Brian Priske has also been contacted by the Light Blues as the search intensifies. Record Sport understands a decision on the preferred candidate has yet to be communicated to the applicants and further discussions could take in the days ahead. Ex-Ibrox defender Martin insists he's desperate to get back to work. The sacked Southampton boss has been out of work since December but has also been heavily linked with the vacancy at Leicester as well as Ibrox. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: 'I hope so [to return soon]. I honestly haven't got a clue at the moment, but I hope so. 'I miss it. Days like today (the Championship playoff final) definitely make you miss it—not even just moments like this, but being involved in something with a team. Looking at the coaching staff and the players, yes, you miss that. 'I've enjoyed the break. It's been a great time to reflect and take stock, but yes, I hope to be back in a dugout at some point soon.' Steven Gerrard also continues to be linked with a return to the club he led to Premiership gold three years ago. The Liverpool legend is back in the UK after flying in to take part in his old club's Premier League title party at Anfield. Ancelotti, however, was nowhere to be seen as his father Carlo boarded a plane to Rio de Janeiro ahead of a glitzy ceremony that will see the recently departed Real Madrid coach unveiled as Brazil boss tomorrow. It was expected that Ancelotti Jnr would be joining his old man his South America on a short-term basis after agreeing to join his backroom staff for next month's World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay. But it has been reported that he has now decided to remain in Europe while he waits news on Gers' big decision. Davide said an emotional goodbye to the Madrid faithful on Saturday after his father brought the curtain down on a four-year stint in Spain. But the Bernabeu No2 was absent from the passenger list for the private jet chartered by the CBF to take take Carlo, his wife Mariann, stepdaughter Chloe and coaching assistants Paul Clement and Francesco Mauri to their new posting in Rio. Gers CEO Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell are leading the hunt for Clement's replacement, with input from Gretar Steinsson - the former Leeds sporting director now acting as football adviser to Rangers in-coming American owners. Health insurance tycoon Andrew Cavenagh and his partners from the San Francisco 49ers will be given the final say on any appointment. But they don't have a second longer to waste, with the Ibrox squad due to report back for pre-season training on June 23 - just a month before the club kicks off it's Champions League qualifying bid. Rangers learned over the weekend the potential opponents they will square off against in the second round of preliminaries, with Greek outfit Panathinaikos, Swiss side Serviette and Brann of Norway set to go into the hat when the draw is made on June 18.
