Messi, Inter Miami teammates arrive in KC ready for frigid Champions Cup match Wednesday
Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates arrived in Kansas City on Wednesday all bundled up in ski hats and parkas and were set to take on Sporting KC at 8 p.m. in their Concacaf Champions Cup opener at Children's Mercy Park. Messi was seen coming down the airplane steps fully covered, carrying a thermos, presumably filled with yerba mate. He and his teammates will need all the warm beverages they can get. The temperature in Kansas City is forecast to be 3 degrees at kickoff, with a windchill of minus minus-15. An Extreme Cold Watch and a snowstorm Tuesday led to the postponement of the game. Concacaf announced Monday afternoon that the game was rescheduled for Wednesday 'due to adverse weather conditions expected to impact the Kansas City metropolitan area in the next 24 hours, including significant snow accumulation.' The statement added that the decision was made to prioritize player and fan safety and was made in close coordination with the two participating clubs. Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said on Monday that Messi is '100 percent available' to play, regardless of the weather conditions or when the game is held. 'I can assure you that Leo will play,' Mascherano said, responding to a question about whether Messi might not travel due to the winter weather. Inter Miami will be ready, the coach said. 'If we have to play in those conditions, we will face it,' Mascherano said. 'The weather will be the same for both teams. But we know Sporting is more used to that climate, but we have to deal with that. We didn't choose it, but this is how it is.' Miami midfielder Robert Taylor, a native of Finland, is accustomed to cold weather and snow. But he prefers not to play in those conditions. 'I don't think anyone likes those conditions, playing in snow is always a little bit different, but it's all about preparation,' Taylor said. 'When you're mentally ready for the game, it really doesn't matter what the weather is because at the end of the day, it's the same for both teams. There's no excuses. We're going to prepare the right way and I think we'll be ready.' How to Watch: Inter Miami vs. Sporting KC kicks off at 8 p.m. on FS2 in English and TUDN in Spanish.

Snow, extreme cold: What's in store for Wichita in this week's winter storm
A mix of snow and the season's coldest temps are forecast as Wichita's latest winter storm is set to move in this week. The National Weather Service in Wichita is expected to issue two advisories Tuesday. The first is a Winter Storm Watch, which will go into effect at midnight, and then an Extreme Cold Watch will go into effect at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Areas under the watch include central, south central and southeast Kansas. Although the advisories go into effect Tuesday, bitter cold conditions are expected to move in Monday. Monday in Wichita sits at a 20% chance of snow that builds to 70% at night. The high for the day is forecast at a high of 37 degrees and a low of 8. Snow accumulation will be about an inch, a detailed NWS forecast shows. Tuesday holds a 90% chance of snow, with Wichita holding an 81% chance of seeing four or more inches of snow. All together, most areas could see anywhere between 4 to 6 inches. Southeast Kansas could see the highest amount between 8 to 10 inches. Tuesday's high is forecast to only reach 10 degrees with a low of -4. There will be a 40% chance of snow Tuesday night before coming to a halt, the NWS said. 'Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous,' the NWS said. 'Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.' Adding to the snow, wind chill values for Tuesday through Thursday could be as low as -15 to -25. An NWS meteorologist said these wind chills values will be the coldest we have seen so far this season. Taking a closer look, Monday night to Tuesday could see a wind chill value of -16, and Tuesday night through Wednesday at -23. Wednesday night to Thursday is forecast at -18, and Thursday night to Friday at -10. The highs for Wednesday and Thursday sit at 9 and 12, with lows of -4 and 1, respectively. 'In terms of magnitude, we saw this several years ago, but it is not something that is expected this time of year, at all,' NWS Wichita meteorologist Jerod Kaufman said. The NWS encourages to dress in layers if you must go outside. The dangerous cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Friday's high is forecast at 20 with a low of 9. Saturday and Sunday highs are expected at a sunny 36 and 49 degrees, a forecast shows.

Frigid cold, snowstorm Tuesday could postpone Inter Miami Champions Cup opener at KC
Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates are scheduled to travel to Kansas City on Monday to prepare for their Concacaf Champions Cup opening match Tuesday night against Sporting KC; but an Extreme Cold Watch and a predicted snowfall of 9 to 11 inches Tuesday might lead to the postponement of the game. According to two sources with knowledge of the game plan, both teams have been in contact with Concacaf officials and are monitoring the weather. If the conditions are unplayable, the game would likely be pushed back a day until Wednesday. Tuesday's low temperature is forecast to be 1 degree and the high is 9 degrees, but wind chill will make it feel like minus-17 to minus-6. There is a 70 percent chance of snow Tuesday. It is predicted to be clear on Wednesday, with a high of 10 degrees, and sunny on Thursday with a high of 12 degrees. The Kansas City Star reported that Sporting KC president and CEO Jake Reid addressed the weather issue at the team's media day on Friday. 'Cold is one thing; we'll see what the snow does,' Reid said. 'We'll be ready. Our concern is around safe access for fans to and from and clearing the parking lots and walking ways. The cold is what it is. Bundle up. Bring your blankets, bring your hats. No one should be surprised when they come out that it's freezing cold.' The game, to be played at Children's Mercy Park, is the first leg of a two-leg series, with the second leg scheduled for Feb. 25 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. In between, Inter Miami plays its MLS season opener at home on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against New York City FC. Frigid conditions in Kansas City affected a Miami Dolphins road game last season. The Dolphins and Chiefs played on Jan. 13, 2024, at Arrowhead Stadium in an AFC Wild Card game and the temperature at kickoff minus-4 with a wind chill of minus-27.
