Your FASTag Could Be Blacklisted Soon, New Rule Will Hit Drivers Hard

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has strengthened its policy to report and blacklist "loose FASTags", not affixed to the vehicle's windscreen; these tags are also known as "tag-in-hand" to ensure smooth tolling operations and authenticity of the Electronic Toll Collection system. This move aims to address operational challenges caused by vehicle owners deliberately not fixing FASTags to their windscreens, leading to lane congestion, false chargebacks, and misuse in closed-loop tolling systems. Why NHAI Took This Decision NHAI's move comes ahead of the rollout of new systems like the Annual Pass and Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling. NHAI took this strict decision to prevent disruptions in the Electronic Toll Collection framework, which can result in unnecessary delays at toll plazas and inconvenience to other National Highway users. With the penetration rate of FASTag exceeding 98%, this initiative aims to make toll operations more efficient, ensuring seamless and comfortable journeys for National Highway users. Process for FASTag Blacklisting According to a statement by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, to ensure timely corrective measures, NHAI has provided a dedicated email ID and has directed the Toll Collection Agencies and Concessionaires to immediately report such FASTags. Based on the reports received, NHAI will take immediate action to initiate blacklisting/hotlisting of the reported FASTags. Impact on Vehicle Owners While this initiative may require vehicle owners to be more vigilant about FASTag usage, it's unlikely to increase problems for compliant users. In fact, it should lead to a better experience for all National Highway users by reducing delays and congestion at toll plazas. What Should Common FASTag Users Do? To avoid blacklisting, FASTag users should: Ensure Proper FASTag Installation: Fix the FASTag securely to the vehicle's windscreen. Complete KYC Verification: Update your Know Your Customer (KYC) details with the issuing bank or digital wallet provider. Maintain Sufficient Balance: Keep adequate funds in the FASTag wallet to avoid insufficient balance issues. Monitor FASTag Status: Regularly check for alerts from the bank or FASTag provider. The ministry said in the statement that loose FASTags or "tag-in-hand" pose a challenge to the efficiency of Electronic Toll Collection operations. This initiative will help to make toll operations more efficient, ensuring seamless & comfortable journeys for the National Highway users.

Dissatisfied with your bank's FASTag service? Here's how to move to new one

FASTag has become the default way to pay highway toll since its launch in December 2019, with the government charging double the fees for cash payment. The digital system is operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and uses Radio Frequency Identification technology to automatically deduct toll at plazas from linked bank accounts. But what if you're dissatisfied with your bank's FASTag service? Many users seek to switch to issuers offering better customer support, faster grievance redressal or cashback schemes. The process isn't a direct transfer but involves closing your old FASTag and applying for a new one. Here's how. -Log in to your current FASTag account (via bank app or portal) and raise a deactivation or closure request. -Ensure your account is fully funded, no 'low balance' or 'hot listed' status, as NPCI rules may reject the transfer otherwise. -Once the account is closed, you may withdraw the remaining balance or have it refunded to your linked bank account. Documents required for a new FASTag When applying for a FASTag with a new bank, keep these documents handy: -Registration certificate (RC) of your vehicle -Know your customer (KYC) documents: -Aadhaar card or Passport (as ID proof) -PAN card (if applicable) -Address proof (utility bill, Aadhaar, etc.) -A passport-size photograph of the vehicle owner -A cancelled cheque (for linking to your account, if required) These are standard across most issuers but check with your chosen bank for any additional requirements. Step 2: Apply for a FASTag with the new bank -Visit the new issuer's website, mobile app or branch. -Submit your vehicle registration number (VRN) and the above documents. -Pay the security deposit plus initial recharge, and confirm delivery details. Your new FASTag is typically delivered within 3–7 working days; some banks activate it within a few hours of document verification. What NPCI says on FASTag activation According to NPCI's FAQ, 'If you have an existing FASTag … and wish to take FASTag from any other bank, you will have to close your existing FASTag before availing another …' Once the new tag is registered under the NPCI's NETC system, the previous tag will be deactivated within about 15 days.

How To Transfer Your FASTag Account To Another Bank: A Step-by-Step Guide

Last Updated: Regular Indian highway users would be familiar with a FASTag account linked to your bank, helping you make hassle-free toll payments to continue the journey. FASTag is a sticker embedded with RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology that enables automatic, cashless toll payments on Indian highways. If you frequently drive on highways, chances are you already use a FASTag linked to your vehicle and a prepaid wallet from an authorised bank. But what if you want to switch banks? With the aim of improving toll payment efficiency across the country, you may find it necessary to transfer your FASTag account to another bank. Whether you're facing service issues or looking for better features, here's how you can easily migrate your FASTag account and continue your highway journeys without any payment hassles. Listed below are several factors that may influence a traveller's decision to switch to a different bank with their FASTag account. – RBI Ban: Specific banks used for FASTag payments may be banned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which is the highest authority to regulate banking activities in the country. Banks may face such suspensions due to non-compliance issues. If your FASTag account is linked with a banned organisation, it won't be operational. – Inactive Account and Better Service: A FASTag account may be inactive due to insufficient balance or non-usage for extended periods. In such cases, the driver may be compelled to go to a different bank for their FASTag services. A different bank may also offer better services that can ease your toll payments and journey. How To Transfer FASTag Account Online While customers have an offline process available to transfer their FASTag account to another bank, here is how you can undergo the process with a few taps on your mobile screen: Step 1: Visit the official website of the bank you want to transfer to. Step 2: Navigate to the FASTag section under the 'Products' or 'Services' tab. Step 3: Complete the application form by providing all the necessary details, including the registration number, owner's name and contact information. Step 4: Upload the scanned copies of all the documents required. Step 5: Pay the required fee using your preferred payment method. The fee entails the cost of the FASTag, security deposit and initial recharge amount. After the payment is done, you will receive a FASTag at your registered address. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Planning to buy a FASTag annual pass? Here are answers to all your questions and confusions

If you are planning to buy the FASTag annual pass, here is everything you must know about it to clear any doubts. The FASTag annual pass will be launched across India next month on August 15. Introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the FASTag annual pass is claimed to benefit the users of state and national highways and expressways by reducing the overall travel costs. The annual pass is also claimed to provide hassle hassle-free travel experience. The FASTag annual pass will be available only for private vehicles and not for commercial vehicles. These passes will be valid to be use on designated national highway (NH) and national expressway (NE) fee plazas for one year or 200 transactions, whichever comes first, from the issuance date. There will be no per-trip charges issued to the user once he or she purchases an annual pass. If you are among those who hit the national highways and national expressways frequently and pay a hefty sum as toll fees, the FASTag annual pass could be a good option for you. However, before you buy the pass, here is everything you must know to clear any doubts. 3 FASTag annual pass: How long can you use the pass? To make it simpler, if you are buying the annual pass on August 15 this year, it will remain valid till August 14 next year or till you make 200 transactions at toll plazas across the country, whichever comes first. Once the annual pass completes either one year from the date of activation or 200 transactions, it will automatically transform back into a regular FASTag account. How AI Saves NHAIs Rs 25,680 Crore And Resolved 155 Long-Pending Disputes

NHAI's New AI-powered Digital Platform: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has released its second sustainability report, highlighting how the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly improved its operations. NHAI has launched an AI-powered digital platform called Data Lake 3.0, which compiles all project-related information in one place and helps in faster decision-making. This technology has made project management smarter and more transparent. AI Leads to Rs 25,680 Crore In Savings This digital transformation directly helped NHAI resolve 155 long-pending disputes. Settling these cases led to savings of approximately Rs 25,680 crore in public funds — a major achievement. The report also mentions that NHAI has not just embraced technology, but has also taken major steps for the safety and health of its employees. An Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Framework has been implemented at workplaces. Moreover, due to efforts to promote diversity and equality, not a single complaint of discrimination was reported in the past year. FASTag Impact Visible Nationwide According to the report, FASTag coverage in the country has now reached 98.5%. This has had a direct impact at toll plazas — long queues have reduced, vehicles pass through without stopping, resulting in fuel savings and reduced pollution. NHAI also stated that it now prioritizes sustainable policies like greenery, solar energy, and waste management in its construction activities. The aim is to ensure rapid development while minimizing environmental impact.
