West Virginia's own Bill Withers honored with statue unveiling in Beckley
BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – One of West Virginia's very own was honored with a statue unveiling – Bill Withers.
Born in Slab Fork in 1938, Withers lived in Beckley for much of his early life.

After years of waiting, event organizers say they're glad to finally unveil the statue.
'We know a lot about history because of the sculptures and the arts they did. If a thousand years from now and everything isn't there, this helps to produce history.'

Friends and family were in attendance to give their remarks. A choir was also in attendance to give their rendition of his most famous songs.
While many were in attendance, one person was missing.

Bill unfortunately passed away back in 2020, but his legacy lives on through his family and his wife, Marcia.
'The hope for me is that younger people will be inspired by his legacy. The songs he wrote, the messages he conveyed in his songs, the emotional and intelligence.'

Along with the statue, they unveiled the 'Bill Withers Plaza' at the Intermodal Gateway.
Officials hope the plaza will stand as an example to inspire future generations to come.
