Ten Hag a candidate to return in charge of Ajax Amsterdam

AMSTERDAM, May 20 (Reuters) - Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag could be headed back to Ajax Amsterdam next season, the club's technical director said. Ten Hag has been without a job since his firing in October, but Alex Kroes told Dutch television NOS that Ten Hag is a candidate to replace Francesco Farioli, who quit Ajax on Monday. "Erik ten Hag has been on the list for a long time," Kroes said. "He is well-known, he did a fantastic job when he was here. "I spoke to him briefly on Sunday. He was in the Arena as a spectator," he added. Ten Hag attended Ajax's last game of the Dutch league season against FC Twente on Sunday. They won 2-0 but still fell short of taking the title, opens new tab from PSV Eindhoven. The 55-year-old Ten Hag coached at Ajax from 2018 to 2022, winning three league titles and taking the club to Champions League semi-final in 2019 when they came all the way through the preliminary stages. Farioli resigned on Monday but had already decided to leave after a dramatic draw in their penultimate game against Groningen last Wednesday when Ajax let slip a 2-1 lead nine minutes into stoppage time to effectively cede top place in the standings to PSV. "Francesco texted me from the bus that evening: 'let's sit down together tomorrow'," Kroes said. "Then he said that he had serious doubts about whether he should continue." Farioli said the Ajax board and he differed on how to proceed next year after Ajax squandered a nine-point lead with five matches left in the campaign. "My decision has nothing to do with the title fight," insisted the 36-year-old Italian. "But I feel that this is the best choice, especially for the club." "I only stopped crying a few minutes ago," he told Dutch television on Monday. "I informed the players this morning. It was a very emotional day. I did not expect to cry for seven to eight hours in a row. With everyone, with all the players, with the technical staff, the medical staff, the chefs in the kitchen." "The path that Ajax is taking now would also fit my career perfectly, with Champions League football next season and great expectations regarding the championship," he added. "I wanted to tackle those goals, but I also have to be honest with myself. I believe that some steps need to be taken very quickly. We differ in opinion on that and I didn't feel that those differences could be bridged."

Francesco Farioli announces Ajax exit day after missing out on league title

Ajax manager Francesco Farioli has announced his decision to leave the club after just a single season in charge. The news comes just a day after Ajax's collapse in the title run-in led to PSV Eindhoven winning the Dutch title on a tense final day in the Eredivisie. Ajax blew a nine-point lead at the top of the table, and despite winning their final game of the season against FC Twente on Sunday, still had to settle for second place due to PSV's 3-1 away victory over Sparta Rotterdam on the same day. Advertisement Farioli repeatedly refused to confirm he would be staying on following Sunday's game and leaves saying he and the club's hierarchy have 'different visions' on how to take the club forward. 'My journey at Ajax started almost one year ago, at De Toekomst, with the aim of bringing Ajax back to where it belongs. And it ended at the Johan Cruijff Arena, finally bringing Ajax back to the Champions League, the biggest stage of European football,' the Italian coach said. 'Being Ajax's first non-Dutch coach since 1998 and the club's first-ever Italian one has been an absolute privilege: together with my staff we embraced this huge challenge with respect, responsibility, passion, and determination to succeed. 'The management and I have the same goals for the future of Ajax, but we have different visions and timeframes about the way we should work and operate to achieve those goals. Given these differences in the principles and foundations of the project, I feel deep in my heart that this is the best moment to part ways.' Francesco Farioli ❤️ — AFC Ajax (@AFCAjax) May 18, 2025 After starting his coaching career in Turkey, he had a successful season in charge of French club Nice, where he helped guide the side to fifth in Ligue 1 in the 2023/24 campaign. Ajax technical director Alex Kroes said on the 36-year-old's departure: 'I find this incredibly disappointing. Francesco and his staff have been a great help to us. It's been an intense season filled with many memorable moments, and we achieved our goal: qualifying for next season's Champions League. 'Francesco also played a key role in enhancing the high-performance culture at Ajax, for which we are extremely grateful. This summer was already set to be a challenging transfer window, and it has now become even more so. 'It is up to us to ensure that a strong new coaching team is in place when pre-season preparations begin on 26 June.' (Rico Brouwer/Soccrates/Getty Images)

Bodo/Glimt vs Tottenham LIVE: Spurs brace for Arctic expedition in bid for Europa League final

Tottenham have their sights set on a Europa League final but will need to overcome an Arctic expedition as they visit Bodo/Glimt in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final. Ange Postecoglou 's side made a good start to the tie as they secured an advantage at home last week, but the late concession of a goal, narrowing their lead to 3-1, could yet prove costly. Bodo/Glimt have beaten FC Twente, Olympiacos and Lazio by at least a two-goal margin in Norway on their run through to the last four, and will be confident of another good result as they welcome Spurs to the harsh conditions of the Aspmyra Stadion. With the final just a hair's breadth away for Spurs, triumph in the Europa League could act as Postecoglou's last chance of salvation in the Tottenham hot seat after an otherwise miserable season. Bodo/Glimt vs Tottenham LIVE Good afternoon and welcome to The Independent's live coverage of Tottenham's Europa League semi-final second leg with Bodo/Glimt. Spurs take a 3-1 advantage to the Arctic but will need to withstand the harsh, unorthodox conditions to book their place in the Europa League final. The Norwegian club are bidding to be the first from the nation to reach a European final and set up a meeting with either Manchester United or Athletic Bilbao. Stay tuned for all the build-up and team news ahead of tonight's clash.
