Lady Gators ring in historic season
WEWAHITCHKA, Fla. (WMBB) – Wewahitchka High School girls' weightlifting team made history by being crowned state champions in both the Olympic and traditional categories of the FHSAA Class 1A Rural Division. The achievement was credited not just to the athletes, but to the entire school and community, according to head coach Bobby Johns. 'It was really more than just about our girls,' Johns said. 'It was about our school and our community, and it was meant to be shared with them.' Two lifters were named double state champions: Emma Rustin and Mackenzie Hatcher, who each took home titles in both Olympic and traditional events. As a team, Wewahitchka was awarded both the Olympic and Traditional State Championships, a feat not often achieved, especially by a school of its size. Rustin, a junior, was named champion with a 365-pound total in Olympic and 380 pounds in Traditional. 'A great feeling was experienced,' Rustin said. 'I felt like I represented well. I think we all did. The pride of the community was carried with us. Hard work was proven to pay off, even when it doesn't feel like it.' Hatcher, a sophomore, posted 395 pounds in Olympic and 390 in Traditional. Ashlyn Ake added a first-place finish with 385 pounds in Olympic, contributing to the team's overall success. 'I am definitely very honored,' Hatcher said. 'Having the support of my school and being able to grow as an athlete and a person over these four years—those memories will always be treasured.' JC Bermudez, Reagan win boys' volleyball region titles. Plus Olympics hopeful event and state hoops honors
The Miami Ronald Reagan Doral High School boys' volleyball team won the Region 4-2A title to qualify for the FHSAA state semifinals. After dropping the first set, the Bison (24-4) rebounded to beat Miami Varela 23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-20 for the region championship. Senior Yeison Gonzalez and junior Diego Requeno led Reagan. The Vipers, featuring sophomores Sebastian Hidalgo and Aquiles Lorenzo and seniors Luke Ieremia and Jose Santos, finished the season 20-7. Reagan, coached by Alberto Pacheco, will play Gulf Breeze (16-5) in a state semifinal on Friday at Polk State College in Winter Haven. The winner plays the winner of Riviera Beach Suncoast (23-1)/Winter Park Lake Howell (27-2) for the state title. In a five-set battle, Miami JC Bermudez Doral avenged its district final loss by edging Miami Divine Savior 25-14, 23-25, 25-13, 21-25, 15-13 for the Region 3-1A title, advancing to state. Led by senior captains Ernesto Alvarenga (setter), Carlos Flores (outside hitter) and Julio Werner (opposite hitter) and junior Javier Ramos (middle blocker), the Thunder are 14-3. Divine Savior finished an impressive debut season at 13-7. Senior Santiago Lopez Farina had 18 kills, 3 blocks, 13 digs, 3 assists and 25 serve received in the region final. JC Bermudez Doral, coached by Wendy Kaufman, will play West Palm Beach King's Academy (20-5) in a state semifinal on Thursday at Polk State College. The winner plays the winner of Miami True North Classical Academy (18-11)/Tampa SLAM (24-0) for the 1A state title. ▪ Region 4-2A Championship: Reagan d. Winter Olympics hopeful There is a cool fundraising event for Miami Beach local Jared Firestone -- aka 'The Jewish Jet' -- on Saturday, May 31 as he attempts to reach his goal of competing in the 2026 Winter Olympics for Israel in skeleton. Skeleton is a winter sliding sport in which a person rides a small sled, known as a skeleton bobsled (or bobsleigh), down a frozen track while lying face down and head-first. Firestone, a 2008 Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest alum, played golf and tennis before joining the upper school where he became a track star for the Panthers. He set three school records in the 100-meter dash and won a district title. He continued his running career at Tulane University in New Orleans, where he earned a bachelor's degree, before attending Cardozo Law School in New York City. Firestone, 33, currently a lawyer with a license in Florida and New York, is captain of Israel's Bobsled & Skeleton Team. Fundraising -- via a special night of meat eating with multiple rounds of Wagyu -- will help offset costs for his Winter Olympics dream on Saturday, May 31 at Palm Beach Meats, 4812 S. Dixie Hwy, West Palm Beach. Ticket at Visit: Basketball state honors Source Hoops presents the 2024-25 Boys' Basketball Class 3A and Class 4A All-State Teams. Fifteen players represent the best of the best for those high schools that participate in Class 3A of FHSAA boys' hoops, and 15 more who compete in Class 4A. Players were selected based on in-person evaluations, a review of all-area teams selected by media from around the state and without regard to a player's travel team or high school affiliation or his ranking by other outlets. In 3A, state champion Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian was well represented on first team. Players from Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons and Miami Gulliver Prep were also acknowledged. 15 Bay County softball players to know this postseason
The FHSAA softball state playoffs commence this Wednesday and three local teams have a shot at making history. North Bay Haven (21-3) is the No. 1 overall seed in Class 1A and deservedly so, the team's only losses came against non-Florida teams. Arnold (17-8) comes in as the No. 4 seed in Class 4A and has lost three of their last four games of the regular season. Bozeman (13-10) is a No. 4 seed in Class 2A and could see a rematch between the Lady Buccaneers in the regional semifinal. She boasts a 19-2 record in the circle with a 1.63 ERA and has recorded 101 strikeouts. Mallon bats .410, scoring 34 runs with 32 hits and 21 RBIs. Addison John, Bozeman John boasts a team high .524 batting average, scoring 36 runs with 43 hits and 10 RBIs. Laela Kern, Arnold Kern is second in the county with seven home runs this season on a .408 average. Kern has scored 23 runs with 29 hits and 28 RBIs. Presley Thomason, Bozeman Thomason hits .486, scoring 28 runs with 36 hits, 24 RBIs, and 2 home runs. Bailee Gladden, North Bay Haven Gladden is one of the top hitters for the Lady Buccaneers with a .456 average, scoring 39 runs with 31 hits, 28 RBIs and 5 home runs. Lily Cobb, Arnold Cobb is essential in the batting order, hitting .364, scoring 32 runs with 28 hits, 17 RBIs and a home run. Kinsey Bruhmuller, Bozeman Bruhmuller bats .458, scoring 22 runs with 33 hits and 12 RBIs. Ally Brady, North Bay Haven Brady has been a consistent performer all season with a .534 average, 38 runs, 39 hits and 19 RBIs. Jayden Reyes, Arnold Reyes is capable of going yard at any moment and is an energizer. The senior is hitting .421, scoring 24 runs with 32 hits, 23 RBIs and 4 home runs. Karlee McLean, Bozeman McLean is batting .293, scoring 18 runs with 22 hits and 17 RBIs. McKenzie Goff, North Bay Haven Goff boasts a .455 average, scoring 23 runs with 30 hits, 34 RBIs and 3 home runs. Hayley Sexton, Arnold Sexton bats .378, scoring 31 runs, collecting 31 hits, 23 RBIs and 2 home runs. Nya Bautista, Bozeman Bautista has a 4.54 ERA in 44.2 innings pitched and has struck out 32. Uncharted waters, Arnold prepares for first Final Four
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) – For the first time in program history, the Arnold baseball team has secured a spot in the FHSAA state semifinals, following a nail-biting finish to their playoff series against Clay High School. One year ago, Arnold's season ended in the Region Championship with a loss to South Walton — just one game shy of the Final Four. That defeat became a turning point. After opening this season 7-5 against one of the toughest schedules in school history, the Marlins rallied to win 20 of their next 22 games. Now, they're headed to Fort Myers. 'We are definitely excited,' said senior first baseman Eli Blair. 'We've never been here before, so it feels like a dream. This is what we've been working for all year.' The team credits its grueling regular-season schedule for preparing them for the postseason. 'There are always ups and downs,' Blair said. 'But those moments have prepared us well for what's ahead.' Five seniors have now experienced the postseason under head coach Chris Jones. That core group has become the foundation of this historic playoff run. 'It's always been a huge goal since freshman year,' said senior pitcher Cooper Moss. 'We've made the playoffs every year but came up short. This year's been different. It's been special, and getting to spend that time together has meant a lot.' The drive to reach the Final Four has been fueled by the heartbreak of last year's ending — and the team is determined not to let history repeat itself. 'That feeling from last year isn't something anyone wants again,' said senior outfielder Austin Hendrix. 'It's been felt all year. Everyone is locked in.' Seeding for the semifinals has not yet been finalized, but Arnold is expected to enter as the No. 3 seed. Miami Southridge wrestler Abigail Gonzalez is the Miami Herald's High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll. The freshman won an FHSAA state title at 110 pounds, going 4-0 at state in Kissimmee to complete the season at 35-1 for the Top 10 finishing Spartans. Elijah Castanon, Miami Christian School wrestling; Michael Sainz, Pembroke Pines Somerset wrestling; Mya Bethel, North Miami wrestling; Cameron Boozer, Miami Columbus basketball; Damian Soto, Miami Mater Lakes Academy wrestling; Kaleb Corbitt, Pompano Blanche Ely basketball; Elvis Solis, Homestead South Dade wrestling; Illia Kyryianenko, Hollywood South Broward wrestling; and Christian Yeargin, Fort Lauderdale Stranahan basketball rounded out the nominees.
