21st Delhi International GM Open Chess Tournament: A clash of titans begins in premier classical showdown

The tournament has attracted more than 2,500 participants from 25 countries, cementing its position as a premier classical chess competition in Asia, where established champions compete and emerging talents develop. Top seed Narayanan (FIDE 2600) leads this year's competition, recognised for his classical chess expertise. The strong Indian representation includes Abhijeet Gupta, GM Diptayan Ghosh, and National Champion GM Venkataraman Karthik. Category A, designated for internationally rated players, features 24 GMs & 21 IMs, including notable international players like Luka Paichadze (Georgia). This category offers Rs 51 lakh in prize money. Bangladesh's WIM Rani Hamid, aged 80 and twenty-time National Champion, returns to Delhi, sustaining her distinction as one of Asia's most enduring international players. The 2025 edition maintains this tradition of excellence. Categories B (Under-1900) and C (Under-1700) each offer Rs 35 lakh in prizes, attracting over 2,000 participants. All competitions follow classical time control format under FIDE Swiss System rules, comprising 10 rounds per section.

This FIDE World Championship Circuit event has been instrumental in nurturing India's chess talent, including previous champions Arjun Erigaisi, Aravindh Chithambaram, R. Praggnanandhaa, and World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, who achieved his final GM norm at this venue. Under the All India Chess Federation's supervision, the tournament has established itself as Asia's largest classical chess competition. The 2025 edition expects participation from over 2,500 players representing more than 15 nations, including 20 Grandmasters, competing across three rating categories. With every edition, we're strengthening the foundations for a sustainable, high-performance chess culture in the country." Category A participants will compete under classical time controls of 90 minutes plus 30-second increments from move one. The top three prizes are Rs 7,00,000, Rs 6,00,000, and Rs 5,00,000 respectively. The first ten positions will receive a minimum of Rs 1,00,000, with additional Rs 1,00,000 prizes for Best Female Player and Best Foreign Player. Categories B and C will operate under 60-minute-plus-30-second and 30-minute-plus-30-second time formats, respectively. Entry fees are waived for Grandmasters, International Masters, Women Grandmasters, and Women International Masters.
