South Jersey mayor charged with DUI while toddler in car faces calls to resign

The Brief Lumberton Mayor Gina LaPlaca admitted to drinking before she picked up her 2-year-old son from daycare on Saint Patrick's Day. Mayor LaPlaca was arrested and charged with DUI and endangering the welfare of a child. Residents sounded off on the incident in a packed meeting Thursday night. LUMBERTON TWP. N.J. - A South Jersey mayor is facing heated calls to resign after she was arrested for DUI with her toddler in the car. Residents sounded off at a meeting in Lumberton Township Thursday. What they're saying The only way anyone heard from the mayor was when a Lumberton business operator told the crowd and township committee that she had received an email from Mayor LaPlaca responding to a request for resignation. The email from the mayor read "I will not be resigning my position. Our community needs to be more kind and understanding about people trying to better themselves. As we all know, there is a huge black eye and black cloud over our town right now." Every seat at the Lumberton Township committee meeting was filled Thursday night. Mayor Gina LaPlaca was absent from the meeting, which came days after her arrest for drunk driving with her two-year-old son and an open container of alcoholic beverage in the car on Saint Patrick's Day, police confirmed. "She shouldn't be here, shouldn't be the mayor," said one resident. The seat wasn't empty because she resigned, as many here demand, but because her husband posted a message earlier in the day saying ,"She's getting the help she needs." The public packed the place for their first chance to speak to the rest of the Lumberton Township government leaders at their first meeting since the mayor's arrest. "We're watching someone's life spiral out of control," said another attendee. Mid-meeting, a strong thunderstorm knocked out power, and the lights flickered on and off for the rest as an emergency generator kicked in, and the thunder inside continued too as speakers demanded the mayor's resignation. "I'm asking for a motion that you deem her non-competent and remove her from town council," said Amy Callahan, a Lumberton resident and business owner, to applause. "I'm asking you guys to do the right thing if she doesn't, and she needs to resign," another resident added. One homeowner and business owner says she was contacted by the mayor while in rehab, telling her she was not resigning. "Our mayor is conducting town business while in rehab. She copied you all in the email calling me out. She will not be resigning, and I should be supporting her," said Amy Callahan. What's next The solicitor told the crowd that by law, there is nothing the committee can do to force the mayor out. "Under New Jersey law, there's nothing the committee can do today to remove Gina LaPlaca as a person on the committee. She was elected by you, and the only way for her to be removed is for her to resign or for you to move forward with a recall election," he explained. FOX 29 News calls to the mayor go straight to voicemail. She began that email to the local business operator and Lumberton homeowner with: "Despite my issues, which I'm working diligently and responsibly to address and improve myself, my work for Lumberton has NEVER suffered or been neglected, nor will it be." The Source The information in this story is from Lumberton Twp. police, residents and officials.

18-year-old charged with homicide by vehicle in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. - An 18-year-old in Montgomery County is accused of a heartless crime. The District Attorney says he hit and killed a man going nearly three times the speed limit and took off. The suspect was just captured by U.S. Marshals in another state. "You don't wanna talk – you don't have to talk. I'm just trying to get his side of the story, that's all," Keeley stated. "I don't talk unless my parents are here," answered a Mendez family member. No comment from the Mendez brothers at their home in the Flourtown section of Whitemarsh Township, just 1.8 miles from a memorial along West Valley Green Road, to mark the spot where 35-year-old Artemio de la Rosa Martinez was hit and killed, while he was blowing leaves on the winding road where the speed limit is just 25 miles an hour. It was just past three in the afternoon on November 8th. The Montgomery County's district attorney charged 18-year-old Shakim Mendez with homicide by vehicle and more after U.S. Marshals captured him in Wilmington one week ago Thursday. Charged with driving a Chevy Malibu that was so badly damaged in the crash that it could no longer be driven. FOX 29 News was on scene as it was taken away on a flatbed truck. The force threw the victim's body 168 feet from the impact and knocked off his shoes, one found 36 feet up in a tree. The DA says the evidence shows Mendez was driving the Malibu 70 miles an hour on the winding 25 mph road with "…the driver's seat reclined at a 49-degree angle, back beyond the pillar of the door and with dark tint down the windshield and a mount for an electronic device on the windshield near the steering wheel, combining to give the driver only seven inches of visible space out the windshield, significantly obstructing the driver's view." The victim's brother witnessed the crash, the DA says and confronted the driver, asking, "Why did you run over my brother?" Saying the driver replied, "It's your brother's fault, he was in the street." After that the driver was seen talking on the phone as he left the scene on foot. The DA says Mendez called his brother Hector for a ride. The two were later stopped and arrested by Philadelphia police in Hector's red Chevy Impala on Germantown Avenue, where FOX 29 was on scene that night. The DA says Shakim Mendez had removed his electronic ankle monitor in the car, placed on him for weapons and drug charges he was adjudicated a delinquent in a prior case. The GPS tracking of the ankle monitor put him at the scene of the deadly hit-and-run, the DA says. No comment from the Mendez family Thursday night. Shakim Mendez or his lawyer will have to do some talking soon at his preliminary hearing, set for March 12th. 18-years-old and no longer charged as a juvenile now facing serious adult felony charges.

Father, son find Zales gift bag in Manayunk; searching for owner

The Brief A Zales gift bag with a gift and love letter was found underneath a car in Manayunk. The father-son duo who found the gift are looking to return it to its rightful owner. PHILADELPHIA - What would you do if you found a gift bag with a piece of jewelry inside? A Manayunk man and his 8-year-old son are trying to do the right thing. Now they're on a mission to find the bag's rightful owner, and they're using social media to solve the mystery. What we know "My son and I were walking down Main Street, and he noticed the bag underneath the red car," said Will Hummel. It wasn't just any bag. It was a little shopping bag from Zales, the jewelry chain store. His 8-year-old son, Liam, crawled under the red Toyota Camry parked next to the Yarn Factory Lofts. "He actually went under and said, 'Hey dad, there's a bag under here.' He grabbed it, pulled it out, and I was like, oh wow, a Zales bag. It looks like a Valentine's card and a Zales ring box. I looked at it, saw there was a ring in there, and took it back home," Hummel explained. To keep it safe and do all he can to get it back to its rightful owner, with Valentine's Day just over two weeks away, Hummel is taking action. Hummel didn't post a picture of the ring or the writing in the card so that only its rightful owner could identify both. What they're saying "What's your thought on this right now? Do you think someone even knows it's missing? That they dropped it?" Hummel was asked. "I would hope so. The writing that they did seems like they like the person a lot, and they hope things continue. It's really heartfelt and well-written, so I assume that they're probably looking for it," he replied. He is hoping that anyone seeing this now on FOX 29 News or his Facebook post will reach out, be able to say what's in the card and what the ring looks like, and claim it. "There's no receipt in the bag. There's no receipt. There's no name on the letter or the card. It's kinda hard to say who it's to or even call Zales and find out. There's no receipt. I just posted on Facebook to see if anyone would claim it," Hummel said. "Just to reunite it with whoever it is who would like it and hopefully get it to them before Valentine's Day," he added. While Hummel has the best intentions for the lost Valentine's gift, his son Liam, who found it, has his own romantic idea for it. "It was a ring box, and he was like, 'Oh, give it to Mommy, give the ring to Mommy,'" Hummel said with a laugh. What's next If you would like to claim your purchase, please reach out to Hummel via Facebook. The Source The information in this story is from the Hummel family.
