Most of Saturday is likely to be dry, but as the day turns into evening, thunderstorm chances go up and storms could pack a punch. PHILADELPHIA - The Delaware Valley has been experiencing warm and dry conditions over the last few days, but that will all change this weekend as rain and thunderstorm chances go up, while temperatures fall closer to normal. What we know What We Know Friday has been an above-average, warm day with some pop-up rain activity and overnight, into Saturday, temperatures will remain mild. Most of Saturday stays dry, with just a 30 percent chance of rain and temperatures heading into the 80s, mirroring Friday's conditions. As Saturday progresses into dinnertime, thunderstorms will begin to fire up. We are facing a marginal risk of severe weather with these storms, with small hail and damaging wind gusts as the main threat. We could also see some heavy downpours with Saturday night's weather. What's next As the weekend evolves, showers remain for Sunday morning and most of next week we'll be dodging scattered showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall totals for some of these storms could be impressive, which will help with the drought situation. Temperatures will drop closer to normal for this time of year, topping out in the low 70s into next week. Philadelphia weather: Possible severe weather Sunday evening as front pushes through
The Brief While much of Sunday will be precipitation free, rain moves in for the late afternoon and evening. The risk of possible severe weather does exist for some, as well as the possibility of an isolated tornado. PHILADELPHIA - Sunday will be a dry day, though windy, so the luck of the Irish shines on the Philadelphia St. Patrick's Day parade. But, later in the day, rain and some thunderstorms will move into the region. What we know A cold front is making its way to the Philadelphia area. It's the same system that has brought devastation to the Midwest and the South, resulting sadly in deaths, due to tornadoes. While we won't see the same devastating impacts, some severe weather is possible and an isolated tornado can't be ruled out. Sunday Most of Sunday will be dry, but very windy. Temperatures will reach the mid to upper 60s, but with the strong wind gusts, it will feel cooler. If you're heading to the parade, the winds will be very strong, so dress appropriately for that. Stormy weather Storms will begin to move into the region by late afternoon, approaching from the west. The storms will continue to push west to east, and the main threat will likely be damaging wind gusts. The rain will take its time pulling offshore, lingering into early Monday morning. What's next Monday morning will likely see some leftover rain showers and windy conditions, before skies clear out for Monday night. Temps will likely only reach the middle 50s. Most of the week will see pleasant conditions, with highs in the mid to upper 60s and sunny skies. Thursday will be the next rain chance, ahead of a steep drop in temps for Friday, as another front moves in, bringing blustery conditions and temperatures only in the mid-40s. Timeline Saturday will dawn cloudy and chilly with overnight lows dropping into the mid-20s. Light snow is likely to develop across a large portion of the Delaware Valley Saturday morning, into the afternoon before it changes over to all rain by late afternoon into dinnertime. An inch could fall along the I-95 corridor and into South Jersey, while further north and west will likely see closer to two and three inches of snow, before the rain begins. Temperatures will rise to the upper 30s for most of us, and continue to climb overnight into Sunday, reaching into the mid-50s, with rain likely for most of Sunday. Winter Weather Advisory A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for upper Montgomery and upper Bucks counties, as well as the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos for most of Saturday as a potential of 1 to 3 inches of snow is forecasted, along with the possibility of light ice accumulations. Groundhog Day 2025: How often is Punxsutawney Phil correct?
The Brief Groundhog Day – we all know it and some even celebrate it, traveling to the quaint northwestern Pennsylvania town for the festivities. Over the years, looking to Pennsylvania's most famous rodent to tell us when we can usher in spring has become a tradition. But, how often is he right? PHILADELPHIA - As for Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, it turns out it's an all-night celebration, not all day. Thousands will descend on the sleepy northwestern Pennsylvania town February 2nd to find out whether winter will linger until the first day of spring or come to end sometime before March 20. By the numbers So, how well does Phil do? In short, not great. In the last decade, he was right 30 percent of the time. And, if you go back 20 years, he was right 40 percent of the time. To judge Phil's accuracy, the FOX 29 Weather Authority compared Phil's national predictions to the temperatures that followed that February and March. Looking at Philadelphia, Phil has the same record. Philadelphia's temperature forecast was correct only 40 percent of the time over 20 years. In the last 10 years, he also got it right 40 percent of the time. That's a slight improvement over his national forecast. Big picture view For Phil to be more accurate, he needs to see his shadow more. Seeing his shadow signals six weeks until spring. Of the last 20 years, 17 were warmer than average. This year, the National Weather Service expects February and March to be warmer than average. Phil's numbers This is the breakdown of Phil's wins and losses: 2005 2007 2006 2010 2008 2011 2009 2013 2012 2014 2015 2016 2017 2020 2018 2024 2019 2021 2022 2023 What's next So, will Phil see his shadow again like last year? Tune in for FOX 29's live coverage to find out what Phil has to say about the end of winter.
