Massive sideshow operation in San Joaquin County leads to more than 700 stops, 150 cars towed
( — Law enforcement in San Joaquin County hosted a 'zero-tolerance' sideshow operation that led to a massive amount of citations, arrests, and vehicle impounds over Cinco De Mayo weekend. 'As the weather gets nicer, we tend to see more sideshow activity,' Stockton Police Officer Omer Edhah told 'We had seen sideshows in other cities starting up so we took a proactive zero-tolerance approach on the issue.' What is a sideshow and why is California law enforcement cracking down on them? The Stockton Police Department partnered with several agencies, including the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, Manteca Police Department, Lathrop Police Department, and Escalon Police Department, to conduct enforcement in potential sideshow-known areas. In just two days, Friday and Saturday, police made more than 700 traffic stops for violations or illegal modifications, issued 620 citations, impounded more than 155 vehicles, and made more than 33 arrests, according to SPD. Sunday's results have not yet been released. 'A ton of work was done in the background weeks in advance,' Edhah said. Law enforcement said this time of year is typically the start of sideshow season. Because of this, additional sideshow crackdown operations are in the works. 'These sideshows can be dangerous to life and property,' Edhah said. 'We have seen the criminal element introduced during these gatherings where shootings have occurred, and firearms and drugs being involved.' He added, 'Great property damage occurs to roadways and buildings during these sideshows. We want to thank the community for their continued support, and we want to send a message to sideshow participants that Stockton is not a place to conduct them.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Just like the grapes, Lodi wineries are being crushed by several variables, including the current political climate
( LODI- Wineries are the economic engine of Lodi. And just like the grapes, the California wine industry has been crushed by cheap overseas imports and fewer consumers. '[Wineries] are choosing to remove some of their vineyards now, pulling them out and looking at alternative crops to put in, and in some cases, they don't have the resources to do that,' Stuart Spencer, Executive Director of the Lodi Wine Grape Commission, said. Mohr-Fry Ranches is one of the many grape growers in Lodi that have had to remove some of their vines. Officials identify fatal Sacramento hit-and-run victim The family-owned business has grown grapes for over 170 years. Jerry Fry is the President and tells FOX40 they've lost tens of thousands of dollars as a result of these recent challenges. 'The grower, in general, is a price taker and so we're dependent on consumption and everything else,' Fry said. This is also affecting the greater community. 'When the agricultural economy struggles, the whole economy struggles here– the irrigation companies, the fertilizer companies, the farm workers,' Spencer said. Unlike champagne, California wineries have also been falling flat due to a common concern at the top of everyone's minds: tariffs and trade wars. 'Wine is often a pawn in these larger trade wars,' Spencer said. Canada is California's top wine importer, and the devastation from Canada's boycott of American wine and 25% import tax is just the beginning. New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has promised never to bow down to Trump, and Stuart says California wineries have now reached another big fork in the road. '[Lodi wineries] need to make decisions based on what they know right now,' Carney said. 'And you know, there are a number of properties up for sale, and there are people exiting the wine business.' So will these tariffs protect domestic producers? Both Spencer and Fry say it's too early to tell. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Sacramento City Fire awarded federal grant to upgrade lifesaving tools
( Sacramento City Fire Department recently received a $165,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to purchase new extrication equipment, better known as Jaws of Life. The department told FOX40 News the grant has helped replace the extrication tools in three of its nine fire trucks that had the older equipment. Each set costs about $53,000. These new life-saving tools are battery-operated, have a nine-hour battery life, and are stronger and more capable than gas-powered extrication tools. With the gas-powered extrication tools, Sacramento City Fire said each tool would often take minutes on end to set up, as firefighters had to use a generator to connect the hydraulic lines to the extrication tool before using it. Now, with the battery-powered tool, it's changing the way firefighters respond. 'We had a large power unit that was very heavy, and each firefighter could only carry one tool. With this one, one firefighter can carry two tools,' Paramedic Firefighter Jason Johnson said. 'Another firefighter can carry the RAM as well as the O'ConO'Connelle, and the drop cloth and some saws, all as well.' With the new battery power extrication tools, no generator or extensive setup is required. Firefighters only need to connect an attachment to it, and with a click of a button, it's ready to go within seconds. Captain Justin Sylvia, the public information officer with Sacramento City Fire, said this changes how fast firefighters respond to specific calls, including when a person is pinned inside their car in need of help. 'We call it the golden hour, and we need to get that person to an operating room within one hour. That's going to be their best chance of survival,' Captain Sylvia said. 'So we can cut them out of a vehicle or extricate them out a lot quicker than before, that going to save time, that's going to save lives.' Captain Sylvia said data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System shows in 2022, more than 55-thousand crashes across the country involved car extrication. He added that 42 percent of people killed in car crashes were alive when first responders arrived–a statistic that underscores how crucial every minute is at a scene. While the tools are primarily used for auto extrication situations, they have a wide range of other uses, including using them to save animals pinned in between a fence. Three Sacramento City Fire trucks and a rescue unit have the new extrication equipment. The department is aiming to have all nine trucks with the latest state-of-the-art tool in the near future. As far as the older gas-powered extrication tools, they will hold onto them and use them as a backup in case the battery-powered extrication tool stops working. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Stockton vice mayor calls for councilman's resignation after traffic stop, violations
( — Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee is calling for the resignation of a councilman after he was pulled over by police for alleged traffic violations. On Thursday around 3:45 p.m., the Stockton Police Department observed a vehicle near El Dorado Street and Miner Street with expired registration tags. Police said they pulled over the vehicle in front of City Hall and learned that the driver was Stockton District 5 Council member Brando Villapudua. Stockton welcomes new leaders, community hopeful for change 'The Stockton Police Department enforces the law fairly and impartially,' SPD said in a media release. 'The councilmember was cited for expired registration and failure to provide proof of insurance, just like any other individual facing the same violations.' Shortly after the violation, Villapudua faced calls to step down from his position on Stockton City Council. 'I don't know how we maintain public trust when we continuously allow someone to maintain the responsibility of governing the city when they have no intent to follow the same laws our constituents do,' the vice mayor said. 'I'm calling on Councilman Villapudua to resign.' This isn't the first time that the council member has found himself in hot water. 'He's currently facing a censure for flipping off a member of the public, we are releasing the investigation where he was charged with a Brown Act violation, and now he's riding around with tags expired for two years,' Lee told 'Mr. Villapudua is not above the law or rules that govern our city. He's a good example of bad leadership and it's time for him to step down.' reached out to Villapudua for comment but has yet to receive a response. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
