Mexican navy ship hits Brooklyn Bridge, killing 2 crew members

The Brief Two of the four people who were seriously injured when a Mexican navy ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge have died. The ship, named the Cuauhtemoc, was passing through New York on a global goodwill tour when it hit the bridge and snapped its three masts. There were 277 people on board. A Mexican navy sailing ship struck the iconic Brooklyn Bridge Saturday evening, killing two crew members and leaving some sailors dangling in the air while waiting for help. Four people were seriously injured in the boat crash, with two of them dying at a hospital later, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said What we know Adams said the 142-year-old bridge was spared major damage but at least 19 people aboard the ship needed medical treatment. No one on the bridge was injured. The ship, named the Cuauhtemoc, was passing through New York on a global goodwill tour when it hit the bridge and snapped its three masts. The vessel, which was flying a giant Mexican flag and had 277 people aboard, then drifted into a pier on the riverbank as onlookers scrambled away. The ship was scheduled to visit 22 ports in 15 nations over 254 days, 170 of them at sea. It had been in New York since May 13 and had welcomed visitors for several days. Sailors could be seen aloft in the rigging on the damaged masts but, remarkably, no one fell into the water, officials said. The Mexican navy said the Cuauhtemoc was an academy training vessel. What we don't know The cause of the collision was under investigation. An initial report was that the pilot of the ship had lost power due to a mechanical problem, though officials cautioned that information was preliminary. What they're saying Just before the collision, Nick Corso, 23, took his phone out to capture the backdrop of the ship and the bridge against a sunset, Instead, he heard what sounded like the loud snapping of a "big twig." Several more snaps followed. People in his vicinity began running and "pandemonium" erupted aboard the ship, he said. He later saw a handful of people dangling from a mast. "I didn't know what to think, I was like, is this a movie?" he said. The backstory The Brooklyn Bridge, which opened in 1883, has a nearly 1,600-foot main span supported by two masonry towers. More than 100,000 vehicles and an estimated 32,000 pedestrians cross every day, according to the city's transportation department. Its walkway is a major tourist attraction. Traffic was halted after the collision but was allowed to resume after an inspection, city officials said. The Source This report includes information from The Associated Press and FOX 5 New York.

Al B. Sure! Is Ready To Face Diddy In Court And Testify In Federal Sex Trafficking Trial

Al B. Sure is 'absolutely' willing to take the stand in Diddy's federal sex trafficking trial with his own allegations against the disgraced music mogul. While promoting his memoir Do You Believe Me Now? during a recent appearance on FOX 5 New York, Al opened up about moments that have haunted him for years, including linking Diddy to his own health scare and the passing of the mother of both of their children, Kim Porter. During the interview, Al also revealed that he was recently subpoenaed to testify in Diddy's federal trial, which stems from allegations of sexual misconduct and trafficking. He confirmed that his legal team is already preparing, and when asked directly if he plans to take the stand, his answer was simple: 'Absolutely.' He also made strong claims that efforts were made to silence him, including what he described as an 'expensive PR campaign' and even a 'bounty' placed on his head. While speaking on Porter, who passed away in 2018 from complications related to pneumonia, he revealed that she once warned him to 'watch [his] back.' At the time, he said he didn't fully understand what she meant — but looking back now, those words hit differently. Al shared that Porter's death never sat right with him, and has publicly questioned the official story behind what really happened. He's alluded to the idea that Diddy may have had a hand in her demise as well. 'She was in the best of health,' he recalled. 'We had just seen each other before she passed. We were celebrating our son's Netflix Christmas special, and she was doing just fine.' The 'Nite and Day' singer also alleged that his own health crisis in 2022 — when he slipped into a coma from multi-organ failure — may not have been accidental. He believes Diddy played a role, and when asked if he holds him responsible, he responded, 'Absolutely.' Despite the heavy claims, Kim Porter's children with Diddy released a public statement last year addressing speculation around their mother's passing. 'There was no foul play,' they asserted, adding that her cause of death had been clearly established and asked the public to respect their grieving process. 'Grief is a lifelong journey,' the statement continued. 'We ask for peace as we continue to cope with her loss every day.' Diddy's trial started last week with jury selection and is expected to start with opening statements today (May 12). More from Al B. Sure! Al B. Sure! Blames Diddy For His 2022 Coma & Continues To Question Kim Porter's Death

Black America Web Featured Video CLOSE Singer Al B. Sure! is once again taking aim at Diddy by questioning Kim Porter's death. Al was in a coma a few years back and also received a liver transplant, so now he's ready to tell his story in his own memoir titled Do You Believe Me Now? Part of that story also includes his son's mother, Porter. He recently stopped by FOX 5 New York to promote the book and recount his last meetings with her and her advice when around Diddy, who's currently on trial for sex trafficking. 'The late Kim Porter, who you know, kind of warned me all along the way to just kind of like 'watch your back' and so forth, and I didn't understand why,' Al said. Actress and model Kim Porter died in November 2018, and her autopsy's cause of death was first read 'deferred' for months before it was eventually changed to pneumonia. But when asked if he believes that's honestly why she passed, Al said, 'Absolutely not.' 'She was in the best of health. We just saw each other prior to her passing,' Al remembers. 'We were actually celebrating our son's new Netflix Christmas special, and she was doing just fine.' In retrospect, Al even remembers playfighting with Diddy at the event when Porter warned him not to cross that line. But while Al has alluded to Porter's death being shrouded in mystery and alluded to Diddy's involvement, he clearly states that he doesn't want to bash the former mogul as networks approached him to talk about his experience. 'I have no interest in talking about another man. But I will speak about where our paths cross and what's most relevant,' he said. 'Even with Sean being incarcerated, that's not to be celebrated. There's way too much collateral damage. Many people's lives are affected.' Still, his involvement has taken a legal turn since he was subpoenaed and said he's 'absolutely' willing to testify. He then recounts all the steps he had to overcome to tell his story, including a bounty on his head, a PR smear campaign, and believes Diddy or those close to him are responsible for his multi-organ failure that led to his 2022 coma. Last September, he took to Instagram with claims that her Kim's Lost Words memoir was 'fake' and called her death a 'tragic murder' because she was plotting to expose Diddy like Cassie did. See social media's reaction to Al's latest interview below. Al B. Sure! Blames Diddy For His 2022 Coma & Continues To Question Kim Porter's Death was originally published on

NWS pauses language translation for its products ‘until further notice'

The Brief The National Weather Service paused any automated language translation services for its products indefinitely. NWS said the pause was due to a contract lapse. Experts warned that non-English speakers could potentially miss life-saving warnings about severe weather without the language translation service. The National Weather Service will no longer be providing language translations for its products. NWS said it "paused" the translations because its contract with the provider had lapsed, according to NWS spokesperson Michael Musher. The backstory Lilt, an artificial intelligence company, began providing translations in late 2023, replacing manual translations that the weather service had said were labor-intensive and not sustainable. It eventually provided them in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, French and Samoan. The contract lapse comes as President Donald Trump's administration is seeking to slash spending in federal agencies, including cuts within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that have led to high employee vacancy rates at NWS offices. Weather experts warned that non-English speakers living in the U.S. could potentially miss life-saving warnings about severe weather without these translations. What they're saying "The value is for the millions of people in the area and around the country that rely on these kind of things, maybe English is not their native language, so when they're getting critical weather information: warnings, watches, those translated in their native language truly can be a life or death situation and extremely helpful to have that. So taking that away is really really important," John Homenuk, a meteorologist at NY Metro Weather, told FOX 5 New York. By the numbers Nearly 68 million people in the U.S. speak a language other than English at home, including 42 million Spanish speakers, according to 2019 Census data. Why you should care Not being able to read urgent weather alerts could be a matter of life or death, said Joseph Trujillo-Falcón, a researcher at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign who has worked with NOAA researching how to translate weather and climate information to the public, including the use of artificial intelligence. He said translated weather alerts saved lives during a deadly tornado outbreak in Kentucky in 2021. A Spanish-speaking family interviewed afterward said they got a tornado alert on their cellphone in English but ignored it because they didn't understand it, he said. When the same alert came in Spanish, they quickly sought shelter, he said. "It saved their life," said Trujillo-Falcón.
