Volunteers set 8,000 flags for Memorial Day in Fort Scott
FORT SCOTT, Kan. — A Memorial Day Weekend tradition continues in Fort Scott.
It's the annual Symbols of Sacrifice which entails more than 8-thousand American flags in the property's Field of Honor. More than 50 volunteers were responsible for what you see in this video. We were there this morning; more flags were placed this afternoon. They'll remain there through Monday. The site, of course, is open to the public the entire holiday weekend.
'It started just shortly after 9/11, and we would put up one flag for each person who lost their life in the destruction of the Twin Towers in New York. Since then, we've moved it to Memorial Weekend, and expanded it to, not just one flag, but to honor everybody who's made that sacrifice,' said Carl Brenner, FSNHS Park Ranger.
Events are also planned for tomorrow, regardless of the weather, between 11 a.m. and 2.
