Monopoly Competition Series Set at Netflix
Move over, Chrissy Teigen. A new banker will soon be hitting reality TV: Netflix has landed a new reality competition series based on the classic board game Monopoly, reports Deadline. The Monopoly series aims to transform the beloved board game into a 'large-scale social-experiment contest.' The series will fuse strategy and alliances with cutthroat competition as its contestants compete for fortune and navigate 'capitalism and chaos.' Just like in the board game, friendships will be tested as players acquire wealth and attempt to own it all. FUBAR Season 2 Sets June Release: Get First Look at Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carrie Anne-Moss' Dangerous Dance Adolescence Cracks Netflix's All-Time Most Popular Shows List Just 3 Weeks In According to the report, Netflix came out on top following a competitive bidding process. (TVLine has reached out to the streamer for more details.) Monopoly continues Netflix's strategy of securing pre-existing IP for use in the unscripted space. In addition to its very successful Squid Game: The Challenge (which was renewed back in 2023), the streamer is also developing The Golden Ticket, a competition series inspired by Roald Dahl's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the 'beloved and unpredictable universe' of Willy Wonka. Only contestants who find a coveted golden ticket will gain entry to Wonka's Chocolate Factory in the unscripted series, but 'a golden ticket doesn't guarantee a sweet ride once the gates open; only those who can adapt, strategize and withstand the unknown will make it through,' reads the logline. Players will then 'navigate games, tests and temptations designed to probe their instincts, resilience and ability to thrive in chaos.' In addition to the globally successful board game, a Monopoly game show aired for one season on ABC in 1990. That series was created by Merv Griffin and produced by his production company, Merv Griffin Enterprises. It served as a summer replacement series, with former Jeopardy! contestant Mike Reilly as host. Would you watch a reality series based around Monopoly? Let us know in the comments.
