Toyota's Throwback Hatch Is a Perfect Blend of Retro and Futuristic

Toyota's hatchbacks have long balanced practicality with a touch of fun—but for 2026, they're dialing up the attitude. The automaker is dusting off a classic nameplate from the '80s and bringing it back with a bold, modern twist. Enter the FX Edition, a nod to the beloved FX16 that once spiced up the Corolla lineup. This isn't just a nostalgia play—it's a sportier, sharper take on the Corolla Hatchback, complete with aggressive styling and exclusive features. With limited production numbers and a design that stands out in a sea of lookalikes, the FX Edition is one of Toyota's most eye-catching compacts in years. It's proof you can still have everyday reliability, with a serious side of flair. Toyota knew exactly what it was doing when it dusted off the old FX badge. The original FX16 made waves in the late '80s with its zippy personality, and now the 2026 Corolla Hatchback FX Edition brings that same spirit with a more refined, but still bold, twist. Based on the SE trim, the FX Edition adds standout touches like a black vented sport wing, white 18-inch wheels with black lug nuts, and a throwback FX badge on the rear. You'll spot it instantly in Inferno, Ice Cap, or Blue Crush Metallic—each color chosen to turn heads wherever it goes. Power comes from Toyota's reliable 2.0-liter Dynamic Force engine, putting out 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque through a CVT. It's not chasing lap times, but it nails the sweet spot between daily drivability and playful performance, with a solid 33 mpg combined. Inside, the vibe continues with black Sport Touring seats, suede inserts, and orange stitching running across the cabin. It's not just about style, either—tech like a 7-inch digital gauge cluster and wireless phone charging come standard to keep things modern and convenient. The FX Edition may nod to the past, but inside, it's all about the now. Toyota packed it with all the digital perks you'd want in a modern hatch. Infotainment & Connectivity: 8-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia System Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto Dual Bluetooth pairing Integrated Streaming with Apple Music & Amazon Music Available 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five devices Safety Suite (Toyota Safety Sense 3.0): Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control Lane Departure Alert w/ Steering Assist Lane Tracing Assist Road Sign Assist Automatic High Beams Proactive Driving Assist for light steering and braking support Beyond safety, Toyota loads the FX Edition with a suite of connected services to keep you in the loop. That includes a 5-year Safety Connect trial with 24/7 roadside help, emergency assistance, and Service Connect to track maintenance and vehicle health. With Remote Connect, you can lock, unlock, or even find your car—all from your phone. It's a smart setup that adds convenience to the daily drive. Only 1,600 FX Editions are hitting U.S. roads, making this trim a true limited-run standout. Toyota's solid warranty coverage and complimentary maintenance through ToyotaCare give owners peace of mind. Source: Toyota, HotCars

Toyota Corolla FX Edition celebrates the '80s with retro name and look

The Toyota Corolla FX Edition has been revealed in the US, and it's a flashback to the days of big hair and legwarmers. Toyota says the special edition Corolla 'ignites the spirit of the legendary FX16', but don't go expecting any extra performance because tThis is no GR Corolla hot hatch. It employs the same naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine as regular Corollas, delivering 126kW of power and 205Nm of torque to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). And yet despite this, Toyota is playing up the FX16 connection, releasing images of the two hatches side-by-side. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Just 1600 examples will be produced. For the record, the FX Edition rides on gloss white alloy wheels, which is perhaps the most 1980s-inspired touch on the vehicle, though at 18 inches these are considerably larger than the FX16's wheels. You can also get the FX Edition in Ice Cap paint, giving the car a particularly '80s monochromatic look. Other exterior finishes comprise Inferno (the bright orange hue seen here) and Blue Crush Metallic. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Toyota finishes off the FX Edition with a rear wing and a 'heritage-inspired rear badge'. Inside, there are black 'Sport Touring Seats' with suede inserts and orange stitching, which can also be found on the door panels, steering wheel and at the base of the shifter. Confusingly, Toyota already offers an FX version of the Corolla stateside, which slots in under the sporty looking XSE and is also said to be inspired by the Corolla FX16. Corolla FX sedan Credit: CarExpert This FX is offered exclusively as a sedan in the US, and uses the same powertrain as the FX Edition. It rides on 18-inch satin-black alloy wheels and features a black roof. Mechanical changes include lowered suspension and retuned electric power steering, neither of which are listed as upgrades for the FX Edition hatch. The FX nameplate hasn't always historically denoted a sporty Corolla variant, with regular hatchback versions of the E80 Corolla wearing the badge in some markets. Supplied Credit: CarExpert But the E80 FX16 is what Toyota in the US is nodding at with this latest Corolla variant. This was powered by a fuel-injected twin-cam, 16-valve 1.6-litre four-cylinder '4A-GE' engine producing 81kW of power, mated with a five-speed manual transmission. It also featured sportier suspension tuning and styling than lesser Corollas. Australia also received the E80 with this engine, in both hatchback and liftback ('Seca') body styles, and wearing the rather anodyne Twin Cam nameplate. In Japan, this hotter Corolla was called the FX-GT. The engine didn't make the FX16/Twin Cam/FX-GT the hottest small car out there, but it's regarded as one of the more exciting Corollas in the long history of the small Toyota, which will celebrate its 60th birthday next year. 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Nods at History

Toyota is adding the FX package to the 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. The automaker revived the FX moniker as an appearance package with the Corolla sedan in 2024. The Corolla Hatchback FX is scheduled to arrive at dealers this fall. Toyota is adding another Corolla FX model to its lineup for 2026. Like the Toyota Corolla FX sedan revealed in 2024, Toyota is adding the FX package to its hatchback counterpart. Toyota's latest FX variant adds a wing, a set of white wheels, and some nods to the original FX16. Like the sedan, the '26 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX is based on the SE grade. That means this Corolla packs the same 2.0-liter I4 under its hood, which pushes 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque through a continuously variable transmission to the front wheels. Toyota says this combination is estimated to achieve 33 mpg combined. While the powertrain might be the same as the Corolla SE, this FX package sets itself apart with style. The Corolla Hatchback FX adds a wing at the rear and a set of alloy wheels finished in gloss white and orange accents in the interior. That interior also features a set of sport touring seats with suede inserts. There's also a nod to the FX16 with the special edition badge on this Corolla's hatch. Toyota Toyota says it will limit production of the Hatchback FX to 1,600 examples for the US market. These cars will be finished in either inferno, ice cap, or blue crush metallic, and are expected to arrive at dealers this fall. Pricing is still to be determined, but this will probably be a couple thousand dollars more than the standard Corolla Hatchback SE's $24,915 starting price. You can probably expect it to start around $27,000. However, tariffs could push that price higher: The Corolla Hatchback is manufactured at Toyota's Tsutsumi Plant in Toyota, Aichi.
