(Marco Alpozzi/LaPresse via AP) CHAMPOLUC, Italy (AP) — One down, one to go. Isaac Del Toro maintained his tight grip on the Giro d'Italia pink jersey on Friday, the first of two massive alpine days. Del Toro even managed to increase his advantage slightly as the Mexican rider edged closest challenger Richard Carapaz to claim second place on the 19th stage and precious bonus seconds. Advertisement The duo crossed the line 58 seconds behind Nicolas Prodhomme, who claimed the biggest victory of his career on the Queen stage. Del Toro inched to 43 seconds ahead of Carapaz overall. Simon Yates remained third but slipped to one minutes, 22 seconds behind Del Toro. The stage featured 5,000 meters of elevation across five climbs — three of which were of the highest classification — on a 166-kilometer (103-mile) route from Biella to Champoluc. Prodhomme was part of a large breakaway right at the start of the stage, and he pulled clear of the remaining escapees on the penultimate climb up the Col de Joux to solo to victory. Advertisement The French cyclist had a broad smile on his face as he approached the finish and he then sat up and stretched out his arms before putting his hands over his face, in disbelief, as he crossed the line. The winner of the Giro will almost certainly be decided in another mountain showdown on Saturday before the mostly ceremonial finish in Rome the following day. The penultimate stage is a 205-kilometer (127-mile) leg from Verres to Sestriere that features the beyond-category climb on a gravel road to Colle delle Finestre, where Chris Froome's audacious attack in 2018 earned him the title. ___ AP cycling:

(Fabio Ferrari/LaPresse via AP) The pack rides during the 18th stage of the Giro d'Italia from Morbegno to Cesano Maderno, Italy, Thursday May 29, 2025. (Fabio Ferrari/LaPresse via AP) CESANO MADERNO, Italy (AP) — Overall leader Isaac Del Toro had a chance to take it relatively easy during the 18th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Thursday, which was won by German rider Nico Denz with a solo breakaway. Del Toro, the first Mexican rider to wear the pink jersey, finished safely in the main pack following the 144-kilometer (89-mile) route from Morbegno to Cesano Maderno, which featured three minor climbs early on before a relatively flat finale. Advertisement It will likely be much tougher for the 21-year-old Del Toro the next two days, with grueling back-to-back mountain stages before the mostly ceremonial finish in Rome on Sunday. For now, Del Toro maintained his advantage of 41 seconds ahead of 2019 champion Richard Carapaz and 51 seconds ahead of British rider Simon Yates. Juan Ayuso, Del Toro's UAE Emirates teammate, abandoned the race early on in the stage after struggling for days. Considered a pre-race favorite, Ayuso stood 26th, nearly 50 minutes behind Del Toro, and was battling through knee pain and a bee sting. 'Obviously this is not how I wanted my Giro to end but some things are out of my control,' Ayuso said in a team statement. 'I wish the guys all the best and hope Isaac can keep pink all the way to Rome.' Advertisement It was the third victory at the Giro in Denz's career, having also won two stages in 2023. The next two stages are both rated with five stars for maximum difficulty. Stage 19 on Friday is a 166-kilometer (103-mile) leg from Biella to Champoluc that features five climbs before a short descent into the finish. Then Saturday's penultimate stage is a 205-kilometer (127-mile) leg from Verres to Sestriere that features the beyond-category climb on a gravel road to Colle delle Finestre — where Chris Froome's audacious attack in 2018 earned him the title. ___ AP cycling:

( Gian Matttia D'Alberto/LaPresse via AP) BORMIO, Italy (AP) — Not content with being the first Mexican cyclist to lead the Giro d'Italia, Isaac Del Toro claimed a statement win on one of the race's trickiest stages to add some precious seconds to his slender advantage. Del Toro had time to raise his arms over his head and then bow as the youngster crossed the line at the end of the 17th stage four seconds ahead of Romain Bardet and overall rival Richard Carapaz. Advertisement It was Del Toro's first stage victory in a Grand Tour and might assuage some of his disappointment from the previous day, when he lost nearly two minutes to Carapaz and barely managed to hold onto the leader's pink jersey. With the bonus seconds, the 21-year-old Del Toro extended his lead to 41 seconds over Carapaz, who leapfrogged above Simon Yates into second. Yates is 51 seconds behind Del Toro. It is Del Toro's second Grand Tour. He finished 36th in the Spanish Vuelta last year. The 155-kilometer (96-mile) leg from San Michele All'Adige to Bormio featured three climbs, including the Mortirolo, one of the Giro's toughest and most famous climbs. Advertisement It was there that Carapaz attacked but the Ecuadorian cyclist only had a 12-second advantage at the summit and was caught by his rivals on the descent. Del Toro made his move about nine kilometers from the finish, on the toughest section of the category three ascent of Le Motte. Carapaz managed to stick to his wheel but the young Mexican pulled away inside the final two kilometers and kept his small margin on the technical finish. Thursday's 18th stage is a 144-kilometer (89-mile) route from Morbegno to Cesano Maderno that features three classified climbs before a relatively flat finale that should end in a bunch sprint. The Giro ends in Rome on Sunday. ___ AP cycling:

(Fabio Ferrari/LaPresse via AP) SAN VALENTINO, Italy (AP) — Pre-race favorite Primoz Roglic abandoned the Giro d'Italia after crashing during a wet 16th stage on Tuesday, one of several falls during the mountain leg. Italian rider Alessio Martinelli was hospitalized after sliding into a ravine. The VG Group Bardiani-CSF Faizane team said Martinelli was 'conscious and in stable condition.' He was carried up from the ravine on a stretcher by an Alpine rescue team. Advertisement Roglic, the 2023 champion, stood 10th overall after dropping five places on Sunday. His fall also involved Richard Carapaz, the 2019 champion. Carapaz continued racing. Egan Bernal, the 2021 champion, also fell but continued. British rider Josh Tarling of the Ineos Grenadiers team also abandoned following a fall. The 203-kilometer (126-mile) leg from Piazzola Sul Brenta to San Valentino included four major climbs across the Dolomites — including an uphill finish – and was made more challenging due to rain early in the stage. Mexican rider Isaac Del Toro leads the race. ___ AP cycling:
