Gregor Poynton MP revisits Scottish Co-operative Discovery Centre
Gregor Poynton, MP for the Livingston Constituency, returned to the site on Friday, marking a key milestone in the project's progress. Just ten months after his initial visit during the early stages of construction, the transformation is already having a meaningful impact. The project, led by the West Calder and Harburn Community Development Trust, is spearheaded by Manager Matt Pearce and a dedicated team committed to showcasing and educating communities on our co-operative heritage. Once complete, the Scottish Co-operative Discovery Centre will celebrate the region's unique heritage, promote Fairtrade and co-operative values, provide educational opportunities for young people, and serve as a hub for real-world solutions to challenges such as inequality and climate change. In addition to its long-term mission, the Centre is already generating local construction jobs and supporting apprenticeships, reinforcing its role as a driver of sustainable economic and social growth. Mr Poynton visited the location on Friday afternoon to view the progress made and meet with the team for a site visit. Commenting, Manager Matt Pearce said: "This is truly community led. The project aims to deliver what our local community wants and that is jobs, opportunities, a re-invigoration of our economy and to celebrate our heritage and identity. To put our village and area back on the map. 'As well as benefiting our local community, the Discovery Centre will have a national impact in celebrating Scotland's co-operative heritage and promoting it for the future. We have a long and proud tradition of co-operation and it is needed more than ever now with the challenges we face. This is about inspiring the next generation." Commenting, Mr Poynton said: 'The co-operative movement has always been at the heart of strong communities, and nowhere is that more evident than right here in West Calder. "This Centre is a shining example of grassroots vision, passion, and sheer determination. "This is more than just a building — it's a statement; a living embodiment of community, co-operation, and hope for future generations. Sainsbury's shoppers heartbroken as store axes ‘best' coffee
SHOPPERS have been left disappointed after Sainsbury's axed a popular coffee. One frustrated customer got in touch with the supermarket after struggling to find the Taste the Difference Fairtrade Indian Monsoon Malabar Ground Coffee on shelves. "Have Sainsbury's stopped selling the Monsoon Malabar coffee?? Tried to find it in various stores but it is not available anywhere," they said. To their disappointment, Sainsbury's confirmed the coffee variety had in fact been discontinued. The Sun also searched for the coffee on but it's been listed as "currently out of stock in every store". The coffee had come in a 227g pack and was described as having dark chocolate, smoke and spice flavours. A description on the website says the product was ethically sourced and laid on the Malabar coast in southwestern India during the monsoon season. Shoppers on Trolley gave it glowing reviews. One raved: "This is the best coffee that I've had in recent years and decent price." Goa and for me it is perfectly good." The Sun has reached out to Sainsbury's for comment. Coffee fans can still get their fix of Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Fairtrade coffee though, as there are plenty more varieties still in stores. Shop to close for six weeks for major refurbishment
A Totton convenience store is to close for six weeks for a refurbishment before reopening with a new hot food range, fresh new look and layout, and extended opening hours. The Co-op store in Salisbury Road is to undergo a major programme of works and improvements following its closure on Friday (June 6) at 5pm. Its 14 members of staff will welcome customers back into the store in mid-July with opening hours extended to 6am to 10pm daily. Colin Haywood, Co-op's Area Operation Manager, said: "The whole team is delighted to invest in Co-op's Salisbury Road store. It will have a fresh and more spacious new-look and feel, and a range of added services including parcel collections, online home delivery and, payment services. "Improvements back of shop will also enhance availability, range and choice. We pride ourselves on being able to deliver the quality and value which can be enjoyed by everyone, and we look forward to welcoming our members and customers back into their local Co-op following the works. "We're here to contribute to local life and conveniently serve and support the community.' Salisbury Road Co-op includes an in-store bakery and a focus on fresh, healthy and chilled produce, alongside food-to-go and meal deals; Fairtrade products, pizzas, flowers; ready meals, award winning wines and every day essentials. Soft plastic recycling is available, enabling shoppers to return and recycle materials such as crisp packets and bread bags, lids from ready meals, biscuit wrappers and, pet food pouches. Convenient parcel collection and returns are offered in partnership with DPD. An ATM provides access to cash in the community, and payment services are available via PayPoint. The store is also a fulfilment hub for Co-op's leading quick commerce operation. Products are picked fresh in the store and delivered locally in as little as 60 minutes.
