How Tom Cruise's new blockbuster created a Tube station in central London
The blockbuster of 2025 so far, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is bookended by two scenes in the heart of London. The movie opens with Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt and his team, including tech wiz Benji (Simon Pegg) and computer specialist Luther (Ving Rhames), emerging from Trafalgar Square tube station and into a throng of police and protestors all on the edge of a riot with armoured trucks standing by. Evil A.I. The Entity has taken control and martial law has been imposed on society. The second scene we won't spoil, except to say that it has the IMF crew back in the same bustling corner of Trafalgar Square and exiting the same Zone 1 station. Amid this dystopian set-up, eagle-eyed viewers will have spotted one major anomaly in the two scenes: Trafalgar Square tube station, of course, does not exist. 'Charing Cross Station has an entrance in Trafalgar Square but to get Tom and all those extras in – and to get The National Gallery in the background – this new tube station was born,' explains the film's supervising location manager Niall O'Shea. 'All the Mission: Impossible movies are love letters to the cities they're in – Fallout is Paris, Dead Reckoning is Rome and Paris – so Trafalgar Square picked itself. It's where a big protest would happen.' Creating the fictional tube station and filming in Trafalgar Square required close collaboration with TFL (Transport For London) – not least in creating the iconic roundel sign for the fictional station. 'The roundels are copyrighted and they kindly gave us the digital model [to work with] and permission to go ahead,' says O'Shea. 'The sign is like a red bus or a postbox, it tells the audience we're in London.' In real life, the movie's station exit is the actually entrance to the Heritage Wardens' office. 'The wardens look after Trafalgar Square,' says O'Shea. 'They stop people putting Fairy Liquid in the fountains, keep it clean and manage it as an event space.' Out went the wardens, in came Cruise, Pegg, director Christopher McQuarrie, a small army of cast, crew and extras and 'a big travelling circus' of trucks, drones and lighting rigs in April 2025. 'We had the square closed for 24 hours on a Sunday,' remembers O'Shea. 'The martial law element was dressed at 11am, the shoot crew turned up at 2pm, we filmed the daytime stuff until about 7pm, redressed it until 10-11pm, then shot til dawn. We gave it back to Londoners first thing on Monday morning.' So where are the Trafalgar Square station signs now? 'I know there were a few people who thought it'd make a great piece of film memorabilia,' says O'Shea, 'but no one will own up to having it'.

This portable hose-free cleaner is a London must-have
I also read the accompanying leaflet, so you don't have to. It says not to put any harsh cleaners inside the bucket, as you risk damaging the mechanism. Instead, pop your cleaner of choice onto the surface in question and spray with clean water directly from the bucket. When you're finished with the clean, remove the miniature integrated water filter and give it a rinse. In the pursuit of saving money, I used a bit of Fairy Liquid on my balcony, and it worked a treat.

Gardeners told to pour washing up liquid on lawns to save the grass
Moss can be a silent grass killer - but according to garden experts, all you need to get rid of it is a simple bottle of washing up liquid. Here's how it is done A green lawn is undoubtedly a crowning glory of any British garden, yet the invasion of moss can swiftly transform that lush turf into a ragged mess. Moss acts as a stealthy assassin of grass, insidiously spreading among the blades and leaving your lawn patchy and uneven. However, gardening gurus have now divulged a simple trick to banish it – using nothing more than washing-up liquid. While some advocate for moss, citing its environmental benefits such as carbon dioxide absorption, insect habitats and soil shading, others loathe the spongy green invader on their lawns and are eager to eliminate it. Garden centres brim with costly concoctions claiming to 'banish moss' or 'kill moss fast', but these products often come with a hefty price tag and the potential to harm garden-friendly creatures like insects, worms, and bees due to their harsh chemical content. This is why horticultural experts have proposed a far superior method to dispatch moss without resorting to chemicals – a humble bottle of Fairy Liquid (though other brands will suffice), reports the Express. The website has highlighted dish soap as 'an awesome moss killer'. Their advice is straightforward: "You can eradicate your moss problem with a two-ingredient cocktail of water and dish soap. "Mixing 60ml of dish soap into 4-and-a-half litres of water and then filling up a hand sprayer is one of the most incredible moss killing recipes you could ever come across. "Simply take your mixture outside and spray on any patches of moss you come across, holding your bottle just a couple of inches away as you drench the moss with your epic creation. "'How will I know it has worked?' I hear you ask. Well, over the next day or so, you'll see your moss invasion turn from a lush green colour to an orangey-brown before it totally dries up and succumbs to the surrounding grass. It's epic. "Now, ideally, you'll want to have checked the weather first and time your homemade moss spraying session with a rain-free period of 24 hours or more, otherwise your solution will be washed away and rendered useless. "But as long as you do that, there's no reason this won't work. Then, once your moss has turned that weird orangey-brown colour and died, simply grab your rake and remove it from your lawn."

Suncream stains disappear from clothes when you use handy £2 hack
Cleaning fans have shared their best tips for removing suncream stains from white clothes – with one stand-out product coming out on top as the most effective solution As the mercury rises, many of us will be dutifully rubbing in sun cream before stepping into the sunshine. For parents, it's critical to ensure their children's tender skin is shielded from the harmful UV rays, but sunscreen is indispensable for individuals of all ages. Sunscreen must coat every patch of skin susceptible to sun exposure, even beneath the sleeves of tees, since garments can shift and unveil skin throughout the day. The optimal method for applying sun cream is on bare skin prior to dressing, yet this isn't always practical, particularly for a midday top-up. Smearing lotion over your clothes risks leaving stains, an issue all too familiar for those wearing white. Fortunately, cleaning enthusiasts on Facebook have graciously offered tips for eliminating sun cream smears from attire, much to the relief of those seeking guidance. One lady sought advice on a Mrs Hinch fan group on Facebook, pleading: "I know this has been asked many times, but I can't remember the answer. So sorry to be a pain, but could someone tell me how to get the yellow effect sun lotion leaves on white T-shirts out, please?" Fellow users were swift to inform her that a solution exists and it's remarkably affordable, costing about £2. The predominant suggestion was to let the stained items bathe in soda crystals, an item readily available at local supermarkets. One person advised: "Soak in soda crystals," while another suggested: "I use Milton and soda crystals. Soak overnight, then wash, dry outside in the sun (if we ever have any!)" Some tips from other contributors included applying washing up liquid to the stained area and leaving it, while others swore by white vinegar as the solution. An individual recommended: "Distilled white vinegar and baking soda. Leave to soak and then rub original Fairy Liquid into the area. You have to get the yellowing, protein and the oil out, and all three of these will do this." Another person offered: "White vinegar. Spray on, leave for a while, then wash in bio detergent. Try and hang outside in the sun." A couple of resourceful users even mentioned using Head and Shoulders shampoo as a possible stain remover, although one admitted they had "never tried it" personally and therefore couldn't confirm its effectiveness. How to remove suncream stains: Use a clean cloth to blot the stain gently Sprinkle baking soda onto the stain and let it sit for 15-20 minutes Apply a small amount of dish soap, massage gently, and let sit for 5-10 minutes Rinse under warm water If the stain persists, apply a stain remover directly to the area Wash the affected garment as normal

Schools across the county were able to continue to operate after contingency plans were introduced. Councillor Andrew McGuire, who chairs the Education Executive told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: 'As we have seen from major high street retailers in recent weeks cyber attacks are happening with increasing frequency and can cause havoc to organisations in a world now dominated by computers. 'Our dedicated IT staff are working tirelessly to resolve the issues and to get the education IT network back on track. ' I want to thank all the staff and students in schools for their patience over the last few days in what I'm sure is a very unsettling time and would encourage everyone to remain vigilant about cyber attacks.' A West Lothian Council spokesperson said: 'We are continuing to work to mitigate the impact of a suspected criminal ransomware cyber attack on our education network. 'This remains a live criminal investigation, and we are working with all relevant external agencies including Police Scotland and the Scottish Government. 'There is no evidence that the council's corporate and public access networks are affected, or that any personal or sensitive data has been accessed. 'The education network remains isolated from the rest of the council's networks, while our IT Services team and external organisations and agencies investigate the issue and work to restore systems. 'We are very grateful for all the support we have received from various organisations and agencies during this challenging time. 'The council's contingency plans are operating effectively to ensure that our schools continue to deliver education with minimal impact on pupils, including SQA exams.'
