'No signs of pests' at Rhyl shop given zero for food hygiene

Family Asian Grocery Shop, located at the old Post Office site on Bodfor Street, was handed the lowest possible score after an inspection on April 10. The business was deemed to be in need of 'urgent improvement' by the Food Standards Agency. A Freedom of Information request revealed significant pest activity at the site, including a live rodent being found in the commercial area and pest droppings found throughout the premises. The business failed to comply with food hygiene and safety regulations in at least 12 instances. The business was served a Notice of Voluntary Closure and the shop agreed to close 'voluntarily' and cease all trading until it had eliminated pests. The Journal can now reveal that the business was closed from April 10 until April 15, re-opening at 12.30pm on the later date. A Freedom of Information request to Denbighshire County Council found that the business had employed "a competent pest contractor who attended site daily prior to re-opening". The council said there were "no further signs of pest activity" on April 15, deeming there to be no threat to health and giving the business permission to re-open. The business has been re-visited since, the local authority added. A spokesperson said: "The premises employed the services of a competent pest contractor who attended site daily prior to re-opening. "The business had addressed all pest proofing concerns and performed a deep clean. "There was no further signs of pest activity on the return visit therefore a 'certificate that the health condition no longer exists' was issued and the premises given permission to re-open on the 15th April. "The premises has since been re-visited to assess compliance on the 10/06/2025 and no further issues regarding pests were identified." Family Asian Grocery Shop only opened in February this year.
