What's Right with Schools: Waterbury students give parents a sneak peak into their school day

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — You've heard of Take Your Child to Work Day, but we're turning the tables in Waterbury, where mom and dad are back in the classroom and it's their kids showing them a thing or two about how things work. They're in the shop fixing brake pads, soldering pipes, working on the plumbing, and some major work is being done in these classrooms. What's Right With Schools: Students in New Haven to go into the wild where they learn self-discovery Geralidine and dozens of other Kaynor Technical High School students are teaching their parents. 'It's weird like very weird, usually in school you don't have your parents,' junior Geraldine Cebollero said. It's a day that's become special for these moms and dads in the Brass City. 'Today is a really nice day. I just want to actually see where my daughter is immersed in,' Deon Cabral, Geraldine's dad, said. What used to be an annual event is back this year for the first time since COVID. Families are soaking up the time together. 'I feel like I'm definitely showing him my knowledge and it makes me closer to him knowing that he can be a part of the trade, too,' junior Erika Reynolds said. While it's great to see what their kids are doing in school, what happens at home after this is important, tapping into family engagement and communication. 'So when the parents are more involved than the students find importance and what they're doing in their education, and we find that the students that have better output because they're trying to achieve not only for themselves, but everyone around them in the community as a whole. And if the parents know what they're doing, they can spearhead a real conversation,' Shannon Flaherty with the Family Engagement Committee said. Parents have a first-hand look at what their kids are really up to during the school day. 'Yes, I try to buster marbles like every time I get to, but it's really nice to see that she's actually sticking to it and that she's really dedicated to it,' Cabral said. Trying something new, all in the name of bringing families together for a special day. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
