Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau's family closer to reaching goal for NJ playground brothers wanted built
Gaudreaus plan Family Fun Day in NJ to benefit playground Johnny and Matthew wanted to build Gaudreaus plan Family Fun Day in NJ to benefit playground Johnny and Matthew wanted to build Gaudreaus plan Family Fun Day in NJ to benefit playground Johnny and Matthew wanted to build One South Jersey community is preparing to come together to celebrate the lives of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, the brothers who were killed by a suspected drunk driver in Salem County last August. The first Gaudreau Family 5K Run, Walk and Family Fun Day is set for the end of May, and the Gaudreau family is hoping for a big turnout. The Family Fun Day takes place May 31 at Washington Lake Park in Washington Township, Gloucester County, and promises food, games, face painting, dance performances and raffles. Johnny and Matthew's mother, Jane Gaudreau, stopped by CBS News Philadelphia to talk about the event. Jane said it's meant to celebrate her sons' lives and their commitment to give back to their community. The Gaudreau family will honor that mission by directing all event proceeds to the creation of an adaptive playground at Archbishop Damiano School in Westville, New Jersey. Dancers from Jane and Katie Gaudreau's All Star Dance studio perform in CBS Philadelphia's Great Hall. "The boys loved children, the boys loved fun," Jane says. "Archbishop Damiano School is a place where the boys had volunteered before, and it's a big part of our family life." ADS is a nonprofit school that provides services to more than 135 students with disabilities. The current playground at the school is crumbling and not accessible to all students. The school community is also a second family for the Gaudreaus. Jane has worked at the school for more than 40 years. John and Matthew volunteered there as kids. And even as a superstar in the NHL, John never forgot his roots: he started fundraising for the playground years ago. ADS is getting closer to raising the $600,000 needed for the adaptive playground. Jane says the school recently secured several more sizable donations. Dancers from Jane and Katie Gaudreau's All Star Dance studio perform in CBS Philadelphia's Great Hall. CBS News Philadelphia The Gaudreau family also says the upcoming event is a way to thank the community for its support. Katie Gaudreau, Johnny and Mathew's sister, joined her mother at CBS News Philadelphia. Dancers from Katie and Jane's All Star Dance studio will perform during the event. They visited our Great Hall during our morning shows to bust a move. "They really have been there for our entire family this year," Katie said. "I'm just so thankful for them, and I'm excited to celebrate them and everything they've done for us." The Gaudreau Family 5K Run, Walk and Family Fun Day will take place at Washington Lake Park on May 31, from 8 a.m. until noon. The run and walk are already sold out, but the Family Fun Day is free and open to all. There is also a sports memorabilia auction benefiting the playground and featuring several signed hockey jerseys, including an autographed Johnny Gaudreau NHL All-Star Game jersey and a signed Flyers jersey. You can find more information, including the event schedule and sponsorships, on A rendering shows how a new adaptive playground could look at Archbishop Damiano School in New Jersey. Lanarkshire dance school celebrating 20 years in business picks up top gong
Starlight Dance has nurtured the talents of generations of children in East Kilbride. Success was in the stars for a Lanarkshire dance school as it scooped a prestigious gong while celebrating its 20th anniversary. Starlight Dance was crowned Best Dance School for Community Engagement at the Scottish Dance Awards this week, proving that hard work and excellent teaching pays off. The school has been established in East Kilbride for two decades and has grown from a handful of pupils to a full school nurturing the talents of generations of kids. Starlight is non-competitive and as well as exams and shows, offer classes in tap, modern, freestyle, cheer pom and street for boys and girls from walking to adult - so there is something for every age. Jennifer Connolly, who runs Starlight Dance, said: "We pride ourselves on experienced teaching, offering a fun, friendly environment for dancers with progression, teaching technique and building dancers confidence and letting each individual shine! "Our school ethos is: Commit, Set Goals, Do Your Best, Respect, Encourage, Be Kind, Teamwork, Have Fun, Shine Bright and we embody this in all our classes and have Recognition Awards for dancers who really display these values." The school likes to carry this forward into the wider community and does a lot of charity work. Last year Starlighters raised over £4000 for local and national charities including EK Dementia Carers Group, Kilbryde Hospice, Children In Need, British Heart Foundation, Young Minds and Target Ovarian Cancer. Through show programme donations, students take part in Tapathon for Children in Need each year and have pyjama classes for this too. They wear yellow to class for one week to support Young Minds whilst also teaching kids about good mental health. Starlight also run a charity show and split all the proceeds between two nominated charities and have an annual food bank donation in February each year. This year over 40 bags of donations were handed in to Loaves and Fishes charity in the town. Jennifer added: "We believe that we all have an incredible opportunity to come to class each week and do such a joyous things such as dance that we should give back to others where we can and display kindness always. I think this is a great mindset for our dancers to have too. "We also engage with our dancers, not only in classes each week but through fun events such as Halloween classes, annual Family Fun Day, Christmas parties, Share the Love Week and Break the Rules days. We have a planned calendar of events throughout the year." This year the school were finalists in the Scottish Dance Awards in two categories: Best School for Community Engagement and Exam Excellence, scooping Best School for Community Engagement. The accolade topped off a milestone year for the club which is celebrating its 20th anniversary in the town. Jennifer went on: "This really shows how we engage with the community in and outside of the school and we have such amazing results from our exam sessions and fab feedback from examiners each time. "We have our anniversary show coming up in September this year and are doing a week at the Village Theatre to celebrate. We have also had parties to celebrate with all our dancers and our special group photo taken. "I really feel like I've built something special at Starlight. Lots of dancers tell me it's their happy place and it's mine too. I'm really privileged to see my dancers grow up and many have been with me from the beginning. Our dance family is a little community and I love what we stand for. "I hope we can continue to offer great fun classes that build skills that can be taken from the class into life, for many years to come." *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Meath Macra prepares for its 38th Blue Jean Festival in Athboy
The three-day event in Meath will run from Friday, May 30 to June 1, featuring live music, family entertainment, and the coronation of the 2025 Blue Jean Country Queen. The festival is set to welcome over 21 young women from across Ireland and abroad to compete for the title of Blue Jean Country Queen – a competition that celebrates community involvement, and rural heritage. Reflecting on her year as Queen, 2024 titleholder Alannah Finnegan said: 'It's hard to express in just a few words what it has meant to me being crowned the 2024 Blue Jean Country Queen. The Blue Jean Country Queen has truly given me friends and memories for life that I'm so exceptionally grateful for. I've had a fantastic year of holding the title, and I've really enjoyed all the opportunities that have come from it. Ms Finnegan advised the 2025 Queens to 'Let your personality shine bright, embrace all the wonderful moments, and make some unforgettable memories and friendships.' Organised by Meath Macra na Feirme, the event is now in its 38th year and is volunteer-led, with strong backing from local businesses, clubs, and civic groups. Macra na Feirme is a voluntary rural youth organisation for 17-35-year-olds. It's key activities include agriculture, sport, travel, public speaking, performing arts and community involvement. Festival Chair Paul Gill said: 'The people of Athboy really love this festival, and we are delighted to work closely with the Athboy Community Committee, whose passion and expertise set it apart.' Councillor David Gilroy praised the festival as 'an integral part of summer' for showcasing rural youth empowerment. 'Macra has provided a platform and an outlet for young people for generations and the Blue Jean Festival is just one manifestation of that.' Local musicians Rhythm and Sticks, The Fógues, and festival favourite Simon Casey will be among the weekend's headliners. ADVERTISEMENT What to Expect Friday, May 30: Opening Ceremony at The Darnley Lodge Hotel followed by a pub crawl through Athboy's main streets. Penhow Community Council tackles issues including loose dogs
Other concerns include the small font on public notices, and mud and potholes on Greenmeadow Lane. The neglected garden at an empty property and gratitude for the new "No Drone Area" signs in the park were also discussed. The council meeting took place on April 2 at St John's Hall, chaired by Councillor J Wagstaff. Attendees included Councillors J Wagstaff, D Jones, and other members of the community. Councillor Wagstaff thanked Langstone School litter pickers for their work during the Big British Spring Clean, which attracted national attention. The council approved the March 2025 bank reconciliation and payments for April. Planning applications were reviewed, with a first-floor extension at White Haven supported without comment. Concerns were raised about a double garage application at Silver Birches due to outdated plans. A £1,598 quotation from Newport City Council for ground maintenance was accepted, waiving the usual requirement for three quotations due to past satisfactory performance. Brian Shepherd was appointed as internal auditor, with Penhow needing to complete a full external audit with Wales Audit for 2024/25. Village maintenance issues were discussed, including a fallen directional sign on the A48, a developing pothole in the lay-by area, and concerns about unauthorised advertising and increased fly-tipping. These concerns will be forwarded to Newport City Council. Several key community events are planned, including a Family Fun Day on June 7 and VE Day 80 Beacon Lighting at 7pm. The Family Fun Day will feature displays from local clubs, a bar hosted by the Rock and Fountain Inn, circus skills, and a vintage tractor display. Flyers will be distributed to advertise these events, and council members will seek further community engagement through radio and local dance groups. City Councillor W Routley reported on upcoming highway inspections and invited councillors to share additional concerns. The council is progressing on the hedge project funded by a BUPA Foundation grant, with additional options like a lectern-style notice board or nesting boxes under consideration. The co-option of Mike Ormston to fill a casual vacancy was discussed but deferred to the May meeting. Due to the chair and vice-chair's unavailability, the May meeting was rescheduled from May 7 to May 15. Councillor Routley said he was pleased to see the continued growth of the village shop and the formation of a new ladies' group following the closure of the WI. Updates from council representatives highlighted grant-related green space improvements. The council also acknowledged the need to begin work on a community place plan, in light of new audit requirements emphasising community consultation. The clerk will attend training to prepare for this project, which will be introduced at the upcoming Family Fun Day.
