Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans metro rescheduled or canceled amid severe weather threat

Jefferson Parish officials are canceling Mardi Gras Day parades because they are worried strong winds could flip floats, send tents flying and create other unsafe conditions. Why it matters: It's the first time the holiday's parades have been canceled in recent memory, other than during the COVID pandemic. The latest: The Krewe of Argus and the Krewe of Elks Jeffersonians truck parade won't roll on Tuesday, parish president Cynthia Lee Sheng said Monday. Her administration is working with the krewes to find another day for them to reschedule, she said. All the Lundi Gras parades in Jefferson Parish and New Orleans are rolling as scheduled. Zoom in: Zulu and Rex currently plan to roll earlier than scheduled in Orleans Parish, according to Fox. Zulu will roll at 7am and Rex at 9am, sources tell Fox 8 and WDSU. They will roll without bands and dance troupes. The truck parade afterward is canceled. All parades have to be off the streets by noon, Fox reports. NOPD declined to confirm the changes, but said an announcement will be made later. Threat level: The National Weather Service in Slidell says winds on Tuesday will strengthen throughout the day, reaching 40 mph by noon and gusts up to 60 mph in the afternoon. Those winds could make floats unstable, forecasters warn in a high wind watch. They could also blow down trees and power lines, causing outages. Thunderstorms, with some severe, are likely Tuesday in New Orleans between 5pm and 7pm, NWS says. The storms bring the risk of tornadoes and hail. The rain is expected to end in New Orleans around 8pm. State of play: It's the second weather-related kerfuffle this carnival season. Parades were canceled Feb. 23 due to rain. Jefferson Parish moved its Family Gras festivities to the Pontchartrain Convention Center, while the parades in both parishes rolled later in the week. Barkus, which was scheduled that day, now plans to parade through the Quarter on Sunday. Zoom out: New Orleanians are used to whiplash weather conditions, and revelers are already gaming out changes to their outfits. The bulk of Mardi Gras festivities are in the morning and early afternoon, when wind will be the biggest problem. Experienced costumers are encouraging others to use zip ties and plenty of bobby pins to secure wigs and headdresses. Others in a local costume group are saying they are paring back their costumes and planning to enjoy the festivities while the weather holds out. The bottom line: Mardi Gras weather will be less than ideal. Stay safe on the route, y'all. Go deeper: Full parade schedule

NOLA Krewes optimistic about parade reschedules due to severe weather

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Mardi Gras parades across the Greater New Orleans area were canceled on Sunday due to severe weather. In New Orleans, the Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale, Krewe of Carrollton and Krewe of King Arthur, will now parade on Tuesday night. Officer of the Krewe of King Arthur Kevin O'Shaughnessy says a lot of their riders are from out of town, however, he understands the circumstances. Some Mardi Gras krewes rescheduling parades due to rain 'While you don't want to cancel, right, you don't want to necessarily move, but you got to do something. So, in order for us to have the biggest crowds, the most fun, we just make do and, you know, try to make the best of it,' said O'Shaughnessy. President of the Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale Kimberly Early agrees, saying changes to the schedule excites them even more. 'It kind of caught us by surprise, but we are excited about the change. We've always had an idea of riding at night, and this gives us that opportunity to delay, but the femmes are always ready to roll,' said Early. For both crews, this will be a new experience being able to showcase their amazing krewes at night. As they say, they have a lot in store for paradegoers. O'Shaughnessy highlights one unique aspect is that the majority of their floats are equipped with lights designed specifically for nighttime parades. Metairie's Family Gras in full swing for Saturday 'They'll see a totally different side of King Arthur. You know, our floats will all look different. Some of the things that we've put on the floats are lighting, and it will be a lot more dramatic. People should be really excited to come out and see what we have,' said O'Shaughnessy. The dynamic ladies in the Krewe of Femme Fatale plan to look fabulous coming down the street in candy apple red and white. Early says they have new throws for everyone. 'We have a lot of throws for our men that come out and see us. We have partnered up with the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, and we are actually passing out little children's books. So we want to promote literacy in our young adults. We have lighted beads that we always have and now will definitely come in handy on Tuesday night,' said dead, one injured after shooting at New Mexico Air Force base Pennsylvania hospital shooting: Family of patients share experiences, concerns USPS honors beloved actress Betty White with commemorative stamp Southeastern women's basketball tops East Texas A&M, clinches Southland Conference title NOLA Krewes optimistic about parade reschedules due to severe weather Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Big Brothers Big Sisters mentorship program relaunching in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Big Brothers Big Sisters mentorship program is now making its return to New Orleans for the first time since Hurricane Katrina. Kalli Christ, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana & Greater New Orleans said, 'There are 81,000 kids in New Orleans that face enormous adversities. We need 81,000 volunteers to step up and say they are ready to commit, commit to spending time with a young person, but what I would tell someone is you don't have to be perfect to be a mentor, you just have to be present.' Pop star Debbie Gibson added to Family Gras lineup The biggest challenge with the re-launch is finding mentors. Currently they've made 15 matches. There are two types of mentoring opportunities. The first option is school-based where the mentor visits their 'little brother' or 'little sister's' school and meets with them weekly. The other is a community-based option for mentoring, where they do an activity together for two to three hours a month. 'Spending time together over pizza. 15 minutes over a cup of coffee or 30 minutes of playing football. This makes an incredible impact on young people,' Christ said.
