NOPD announces security plans for Mardi Gras, the Big Game
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department has announced some preliminary plans for the French Quarter and Bourbon Street ahead of the Super Bowl, Mardi Gras and beyond. The festivities will be kicking into high gear starting Monday, and NOPD Chief Anne Kirkpatrick says she believes her team has the city prepared for the celebration to be as safe and exciting as possible. Around the French Quarter and Bourbon Street, barriers and wedges can be seen being placed as the NOPD continues to implement more security measures. They say many of these barriers placed for the big game will also stick around during Mardi Gras season. Who's coming to Family Gras 2025? 'We have a lot of partnerships and a lot of that is NFL security and those are their assets that they are bringing in to what we call harden target Poydras and Canal for when we prepare for the Super Bowl week,' said Kirkpatrick. With the Department of Homeland Security designating the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras as major events requiring extensive support, the NOPD says they are collaborating with multiple federal agencies, along with local partners such as the Louisiana State Police, for extra assistance to ensure safety for everyone. 'We're going to have multiple tactical teams, we're going to have undercover officers and what we're going to do is spread them out not only in the dome, but around the French Quarter and the CBD,' said Chief Deputy Superintendent Hans Ganthier. The NOPD says they have been utilizing the community's help in ensuring a safe Super Bowl, saying they have offered many members of the hospitality community training to provide additional 'eyes and ears' as part of the See Something, Say Something campaign. 'I hope this to be the place where Jefferson Parish wants to come and just hang out. We have great restaurants. I mean the walkability of Fat City; we do have the bones here to make this a great place. We just need to get rid of the last remaining seediness, and this is the beginning of that,' said Liljeberg.
