Whisked away by deception: Graham Hornigold's heartbreaking catfish tale featured in 'Con Mum'

Pastry chef Graham Hornigold unpacks how he was swindled by his 'Con Mum'. Image: Netflix If 'Con Mum' proves anything, it is that there are a lot of catfish out there and that they will continue to do what they do best. 'The Tinder Swindler', 'Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare', 'Inventing Anna' and 'Fanatical' are some of the streaming offerings that have exposed not just the deception and greed of con artists but also their lack of remorse. While this genre has proven to be a goldmine for networks, I've grown wary of watching the same gullible actions on repeat, albeit in different scenarios. With so many red flags, how are such responsible, learned people allowing themselves to be swindled? Sadly, their emotional baggage has made them susceptible to opportunistic individuals. Of late, there's been a lot of buzz around the Netflix documentary feature, which centres on Graham Hornigold, a talented and respected pastry chef who finds his life upended by a woman claiming to be his mother. Leading a fulfilled life, Graham and his pastry chef wife Heather Kaniuk were looking forward to becoming first-time parents. However, just before the arrival of their bundle of joy, correspondence from an 80-something Dionne Marie Hanna changed the course of their life. Having passed the test in terms of answering cursory questions, Graham and his wife agreed to meet his biological mother. Her nurturing demeanour saw them drop their guard, and he got to know his mother better. He wanted to make up for lost time, more so with his mother's ailing health. Her gregarious personality was underpinned by her lavish lifestyle. It was unsettling for the couple, who come from a middle-income background. Believing Dionne to be wealthy after her claims of belonging to the Brunei royal family, Graham and Heather found themselves being showered with expensive gifts like Range Rovers. Dionne then asks Graham to accompany her to Switzerland, where she needs to transfer all her assets into his name. However, the short trip gets extended and, while there, Dionne, unbeknownst to Graham, befriends and exploits a few other individuals. Video Player is loading. Every single Oddworld game is available right now for a single, solitary dollar

I am prepared to break my own rules and impulse buy the Oddworld bundle that has just popped up on Fanatical. It includes every single Oddworld game—a series of lavishly animated 2D puzzle platformers starring a weird-looking green guy—for just one dollar, a price that compares extremely favourably to its usual $84.92. That dollar gets you six games (though one of them, New 'n' Tasty, is a remake of another, Abe's Oddysee) as well as a DLC level and costume for New 'n' Tasty. They are: Oddworld: Abe's Oddyssee (1997) Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus (1998) Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee (2001) Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD (2005) Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty (2015) Oddworld: Soulstorm Enhanced Edition (2022) The games are a mixed bag, but I reckon Abe's Oddysee is a must play. It debuted on the original PlayStation back in 1997 and broke the mould of that era by taking place on a 2D plane. That allowed a lot of headroom for character animations that looked absolutely gorgeous at the time, and while it feels a little clumsy in the hand by modern standards, it's still richly atmospheric and the right amount of bonkers. There are some other good Oddworlds, too. As I mentioned before, New 'n' Tasty is a remake of the first Oddworld and worth prioritizing if you don't have patience for antiquity. Exoddus is a direct sequel to the first and feels kinda the same, albeit on a grander scale. In my opinion—not one shared by our reviewer—the most recent Soulstorm is the best place to start: it's a completely modernised take on the original format. And who can forget Stranger's Wrath? It's the oddity of the bundle and I don't mean that in the sense that you should keep a wide berth. It takes the series into proper 3D environments, with third-person platforming and first-person shooting. It was very well-received back in 2005, and comes recommended if you miss the days when all games were brown. I'm not sure how long this bundle will last, but it's available now on Fanatical.

Silent Hill 2 remake and Indiana Jones are at historically low prices this Steam Spring Sale—so long as you don't buy them directly from Steam

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's Steam Spring Sale time, and you know what that means: time to buy very cheap videogames from websites that aren't Steam. For instance, sites like Fanatical are currently running their own spring sales, meaning you can pick up a load of games you'll never actually play for even cheaper than you can get them during Steam's shindig. They're Steam keys, too, so there's no reason not to unless you're desperately keen on ranking up your seasonal badge or something. You can, for example, pick up that Silent Hill 2 remake for about $36 (£31) right now, a full $12 cheaper than it is on Steam. It's a similar story for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which is about $9 cheaper than it is on Steam at $48 (£41). Or you can get a, uh, YouTube and Podcasting Royalty Free Assets bundle for a single US dollar. The world's in a rough spot right now. You know what it needs? Your podcast. Frankly, this has all been a big lead-in to my real Steam sale tip, which is to never look at any individual storefront at all. What you should be doing is using IsThereAnyDeal and its browser extension—Augmented Steam—to make sure you're getting the most bang for your buck. Personally, I recommend signing in with your Steam account and linking your wishlist, but I'm not your mum. I think. A quick check of ITAD's deals page reveals new historically low prices for Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Forbidden West, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and plenty else besides. It's just that none of them, despite being Steam keys, are at those prices on Steam itself. So, you know, if you've been spending this Steam sale looking at Steam, like some kind of weirdo, branch out a little. There are deals everywhere for those with the browser extensions and bookmarks to see.
