There are few songs that define the sound and feel of the 1980s as perfectly as "The Safety Dance." That's why the unforgettable Men Without Hats tune has been used in so many '80s-themed movies and TV shows — and it's also why fans freaked out when the band made an unexpected announcement this week.
In a stitch shared on Monday, June 2, lead singer Ivan Doroschuk, 67, responded to a video of TikTok user Doug Shybee lip-syncing to "The Safety Dance" with a plant on his head.
"Doug, it's Ivan from Men Without Hats," Doroschuk said, adding, "and I'm glad I joined TikTok just in time to see this video. Follow our account for new music coming soon."
Fans in the comments couldn't get over the unexpected announcement.
"Oh shnap!! I was just jamming out to 'Pop goes the world'!! Love you guys. Keep on keeping on," gushed one person.
"EEEEEKKKKK! YAY!! One of the greatest songs of the 80s," added a second commenter, with another agreeing, "Safety Dance is my good mood song. Always makes me smile plus I LOVE the music video!"
"Yes Yes Yes Please! New music, old music, bring it on! You've found your people, the most loyal generation of music freaks!" raved yet another fan.
In an interview with WIVB News last fall, Doroschuk opened up about the origins of "The Safety Dance," explaining why and how the chart-topping tune appealed to so many different types of people.
'There was no real dance, it was just the 'S' movement,' he said, adding, 'That was available to anybody. There was no dress code, there was no dance move, it sort of appealed right across the board, which is why we still have fans who like punk rock, who like jazz, who like all kinds of music. They kind of come together with 'Safety Dance.''
Decades later, listeners are still falling in love with the song.
'You could dress how you want to, you could dance how you want to, you could dance if you want to and it didn't really matter and it was easy.
