Jon Bernthal Says He ‘Made' Tom Holland's Audition Tape for ‘Captain America: Civil War,' Takes ‘a Little' Credit For Him Becoming Spider-Man
Tom Holland has Jon Bernthal to thank for helping him land the role of Spider-Man. During a recent interview on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!,' Bernthal said while working with Holland on Brendan Muldowney's 'Pilgrimage,' the pair collaborated on each other's MCU audition tapes. While Holland helped Bernthal with his tryout for the leading role in the 2017 series 'The Punisher,' Bernthal assisted Holland in landing the role of Spider-Man in 'Captain America: Civil War.' 'That was where both Tom did his audition for 'Spider-Man' and I did my audition for 'Punisher.' We actually made each other's audition tapes on that film.' Bernthal explained that Holland 'really believed' that he would land that part despite heavy competition, often repeating ''I am Spider-Man'' while working on his audition. 'I was like 'There's probably a lot of people that want to be Spider-Man,'' Bernthal said. ''I mean, you're super talented and all, but the odds are kind of against you, but yeah, let's make the tape.' He just had this belief, and when you get to know him and see how he shows up, there is a reason why he is the movie star that he is.' He went on to joke that he takes 'credit' for part of why Holland became Spider-Man, citing a note to include stunts in the tape. 'I gave him the note, 'Tom, maybe you should run up that wall and do a double backflip and then start the scene,'' Bernthal explained. 'And he was like, 'Yeah, you think I should do that? That's not too much?'' He continued, 'I was like, 'I don't think any of these other fools are able to do that,' and he in fact did that. It's not that I take responsibility for him, but you know, like a little something.' Scarlett Johansson sounds very certain she will never return to the MCU as Black Widow: ‘Let it go'
While superheroes are often thought of as invincible, Scarlett Johansson would like to remind everyone that some heroes need to have their final sendoff. In an interview published in InStyle on Tuesday, the 'Lost In Translation' star addressed the incessant questions around her Marvel Cinematic Universe character Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. The Black Widow, who died on screen in 2019's 'Avengers: Endgame.' 'Natasha is dead. She is dead. She's dead. Okay?,' she told the publication. For those keeping track, her character – a highly skilled assassin – was a fundamental part of the superhero team known as the Avengers who gave her life in order to procure an Infinity Stone which ultimately defeated extraterrestrial supervillain Thanos and saved the universe. As Marvel lays the groundwork for the cinematic universe's next phase – beginning with this summer's 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' – speculation has abounded about Natasha's potential return to the franchise. Johansson is quick to quash that speculation. 'They just don't want to believe it. They're like, 'But she could come back!'' she told the publication. 'Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand.' She added: 'We're going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment.' A refreshed Avengers lineup will debut with 2026's 'Avengers: Doomsday,' a movie that will mark Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU but not as Iron Man, who he has portrayed in nine films since 2008. He will be playing villainous Dr. Doom.
