Penfield, Canandaigua boys advance to state semis
In a back-and-forth battle in the Class A Far West Regional, Penfield came out on top with a 12-10 win over Orchard Park of Section VI. Penfield jumped out to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained the lead for an 8-5 advantage at the half. Outscoring the Patriots 3-2 in the third quarter, Orchard Park trailed 10-8 with a quarter remaining. A goal from Orchard Park's Owen Wright made it a one-goal game with seven minutes left to play. Penfield responded with a goal from Tyler Pavone to retake the two-goal lead. Less than a minute later, Orchard Park answered as Justin Relosky fired one in to make it an 11-10 game. Jake Maurer scored the crucial insurance goal for Penfield with three minutes remaining. From there, Mason Schembri kept Orchard Park out of the net to secure the victory. Maurer led the way for the Patriots with five goals. Brodie Joyce, Griffin Banister and Pavone each tallied two. Penfield (14-7) advances to the Class A state semifinal where it will face West Genesee of Section III on Wednesday, June 11th. A seven-goal first quarter from Canandaigua powered it to the 15-6 win over Lake Shore (VI) in the Class B Far West Regionals. The Gray Wolves dominated from the start, taking a 13-1 advantage into the half. They scored just two goals in the second, but the first-half performance was enough to keep them out front. Patrick Olvany led the way with three goals. Drew Williamee, Mike Belles, AJ Sterman and Ryan McKeegan each put up two in the win. Honeoye's Washburn is Player of the Week
After back-to-back double-digit performances that led Honeoye boys basketball to the Class C state semifinals, Landon Washburn is our Player of the Week. Washburn's week started in the regional qualifier against York. With just over five minutes to play in the game, Honeoye trailed by four points. The Bulldogs closed the game on a 14-0 run with 12 points coming from Washburn, pushing Honeoye to the comeback win and keeping its season alive. In the Far West Regionals, Washburn had another game-high performance. He dropped 28 points to lead Honeoye to a four-point win over Westfield. Roundball Roundup: Sectional Championship Saturday
Editor's note: This page will be updated throughout the day with results from Saturday's 12 championship games. A second-half surge and a pair of late clutch free throws gave the Bombers their first sectional title since 2012. The River Hawks stormed out of the gate to a 17-9 first-quarter lead, but East Rochester responded to trail just 28-24 at the half. Avon led 41-38 midway through the third quarter, but then the Bombers went on a run. East Rochester scored the final eight points of the frame to go up 46-41, then hit a pair of shots early in the fourth to close a 12-1 run for a 50-42 lead. With 5:30 to play, East Rochester still found themselves up eight. But then the Bombers committed a technical foul. After the free throws and a basket on the ensuing possession, Avon trailed just 52-49. Avon was down by two points with a minute to play when Trevor Stroud hit a three-pointer to put the River Hawks up 56-55. With 13 seconds to play, East Rochester drew a shooting foul. Eli Tanner stepped up to the free-throw line and sunk two clutch free-throws for a 57-56 lead. Avon could not match as a final shot at the buzzer bounced off the side of the backboard to give East Rochester the win. Tanner was named the Tournament MVP, leading East Rochester (20-3) with a game-high 19 points, with 17 coming in the second half. Tyler Leisten had nine points, Jordan Nunn and Raydavion Allen totaled eight, while Justice Allen scored 7. Stroud led Avon (18-5) with 18 points, Kal Dolgos scored 15, while Josh Harter netted 10.
