Steelers receive bad news on potential Chris Olave trade — Saints remain stubborn

Steelers receive bad news on potential Chris Olave trade — Saints remain stubborn Sorry Steelers fans, trading for Chris Olave might be a long shot. According to a report from Steelers beat writer Nick Farabaugh of PennLive, the Saints rebuffed Pittsburgh's attempt to inquire about Olave's availability, as New Orleans views him as having a pivotal role on offense in 2025. Farabaugh also explained that the situation was merely a "due diligence call" from Pittsburgh, which happens quite frequently in the NFL. Even if New Orleans were willing to play ball, so to speak, Farabaugh and Saints beat writer Ross Jackson agreed that the trade compensation would resemble that of the DK Metcalf deal — a second-round pick and a Day 3 selection. Jackson argued that he doubts "Pittsburgh is looking to cough that up after the DK trade," while Farabaugh made an even more definitive statement on social media: "Saints ain't trading Olave." Should Steelers fans give up on the Olave pipedream — and if so, who, if any, will join the roster to help alleviate the absence of Pickens on offense?

NFL Free Agency Notes: Aaron Rodgers ‘clearly the favorite' for Steelers

ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) – The Pittsburgh Steelers have been very active so far ahead of Wednesday, which is the league's new year and when free agent signings can become official. What's been more notable though is the move they haven't made yet: lock down a deal with a quarterback. For months, it seemed like Justin Fields was trending to be Pittsburgh's starting QB in 2025. However, the former first round pick is reportedly signing a two-year contract with the New York Jets that is worth $40 million. With Sam Darnold reportedly signing with Seattle on Monday, the Steelers now turn their attention to incumbent starter Russell Wilson and former Super Bowl champion Aaron Rodgers. PennLive Steelers beat reporter Nick Farabaugh tells WTAJ that Rodgers is Pittsburgh's preferred option. 'I think if they had wanted Russell Wilson back, this would have already been done,' Farabaugh said. 'If Rodgers spurns the Steelers and they have to go back to Wilson, they will. But I think Rodgers is pretty clearly the favorite right now for the Steelers.' Rodgers has had a tumultuous time in New York between a lack of success, his Achilles injury and baggage off the field. However, the four-time MVP did perform better toward the end of last season, a sign that the 41-year-old has recovered more from his Achilles tear that happened in his Jets debut. Last season, Rodgers passed for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns to go along with 11 interceptions. Farabaugh isn't thrilled with either option, especially due to the age of both quarterbacks. '(Both are) a one-year Band-Aid and then we're going to be back here next year,' Farabaugh said. 'I don't think there's really a free agent out there that you can point to right now and say, that guy is who you would want as your quarterback.' Both Wilson and Rodgers are also being pursued by the New York Giants. Farabaugh believes either quarterback could sign for roughly $15 million with performance-based incentives. STEELERS MOVES Pittsburgh traded a 2025 second round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for star wide receiver DK Metcalf. The Steelers gave Metcalf a five-year, $150 million extension. The Steelers are placing a second-round tender on running back Jaylen Warren, which is worth $5.3 million. If a team wants to sign Warren, the Steelers have the right to match that deal or otherwise the other team would give up a second-round pick to acquire Warren. The Steelers are reportedly signing Eagles corner Darius Slay. The 34-year-old must be officially released by Philadelphia before the signing can be official. Pittsburgh is signing offensive lineman Ryan McCollum to a one-year contract. McCollum started two games when center Zach Frazier was injured. The Steelers are reportedly signing linebacker Malik Harrison to a two-year, $10 million deal. STEELERS DEPARTURES Offensive tackle Dan Moore Jr. is reportedly signing a four-year contract with the Tennessee Titans that is worth up to $82 million with $50 million guaranteed. Cornerback Donte Jackson is reportedly signing a two-year, $13 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers Pittsburgh is releasing defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi. The move frees up more than $7 million in cap space. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
