A Rare Firefly Rediscovered In Bukit Kiara After A Century
Subscribe to our FREE A firefly species not seen for over a century has been Tan Wei Jack, a master's student in environmental science at Monash University Malaysia and a research assistant, stumbled upon the rare insect on 23 October 2023 while surveying fireflies in the area. Initially, Tan believed the firefly belonged to a group known as Colophotia. But something about its appearance stood out. Intrigued, he took microscope images of the specimen and shared them with his academic supervisor, Dr Wan Faridah Akmal Jusoh. After closer analysis, they discovered it wasn't from the Colophotia genus. It was identified as a bent-winged firefly from the genus Pteroptyx — specifically Pteroptyx gombakia, also known as the Gombak bent-winged firefly. Photo: Monash University Malaysia This species was last recorded in 1921 at Genting Sempah in Gombak, Selangor. Its name, gombakia, was inspired by the location where it was first collected. The species was officially named in 2015 by Australian entomologist Lesly Ballantyne, who came across a preserved specimen at the Natural History Museum in London. Excited by the rediscovery, Tan and Dr Faridah, a firefly taxonomist and senior lecturer in biodiversity and conservation, returned to Bukit Kiara to gather more data. 'Whenever we saw their flashing lights at twilight, we would catch the fireflies, study their features, note their species, and let them go,' Tan said. What makes this find especially surprising is its location. Pteroptyx fireflies are typically found in mangrove forests and are famous for flashing in synchronized displays. Yet here was a bent-winged Pteroptyx thriving in a hill park — a first of its kind. Dr Faridah believes this could mean that the species is more adaptable than previously thought. However, unlike its mangrove cousins, P. gombakia doesn't seem to gather in large groups. This unusual behaviour has sparked new research efforts. Dr Faridah is concerned that P. gombakia may be teetering on the edge of extinction. She noted that threats such as habitat loss due to urban development and artificial night lighting are major challenges, as they interfere with the fireflies' light-based communication. Despite the risks, Dr Faridah remains hopeful. The question remains: will this rare firefly continue to glow in the dark, or will it vanish once more into history? According to SAS President Datin Belinda Brigid Banding, one of the activities planned is the presentation of donations to selected charitable organizations by the wife of the Sabah Head of State, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, who is also the association's patron. 'In conjunction with the association's 50th anniversary, various activities will be held, including donations to selected welfare bodies. The highlight of the celebration will be a gala dinner to mark SAS's 50th anniversary, where Toh Puan will be the guest of honor,' she told the media after paying a courtesy visit to Faridah at Istana Seri Kinabalu. Belinda explained that the visit aimed to introduce SAS's committee members to Faridah and brief her on the association's upcoming activities. She said SAS is a collective of secretaries serving in federal, state, and private sectors in Sabah. 'Initially, this association had only 63 members, but over the years, membership has grown, and SAS now has over 100 registered members.' 'The purpose of establishing this association is to unite secretaries across Sabah while helping members enhance their skills and knowledge to improve the quality of their services.' 'We also welcome all secretaries in Sabah to join the association, regardless of age,' she said. Additionally, Belinda urged all secretaries to equip themselves with knowledge and skills to face advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. 'The use of AI in the secretarial field is beneficial, but they should not rely entirely on it. 'They must understand and always double-check their work to ensure higher-quality output,' she added.

Single mum, son, and grandma brave blaze to escape burning home
KOTA TINGGI: A single mother and her family were forced to flee through flames to escape a fire that destroyed their rented home in Taman Desaru Utama, Bandar Penawar, early yesterday morning. Faridah Mohamed, 51, said she was awoken by the smell of smoke at 5.30am and discovered her Perodua Kancil ablaze outside their home. "I tried turning off the fan and unplugging appliances, but the burning smell only worsened. I woke my mother and son. When I opened the front door, thick smoke was pouring from the car," she said. She initially attempted to release the smoke by opening the car's rear door, but flames erupted suddenly. "I grabbed a wet cloth and tried to put out the fire, but failed. I considered using the garden hose but feared it would only make things worse." With flames quickly spreading into the house, Faridah made the split-second decision to escape through the fire with her son and elderly mother. "If we hadn't, we would have been trapped inside," she said. Faridah, who has lived in the rented home since her divorce, said that her car was her only means of earning a living by selling satay. The fire caused an estimated RM150,000 in losses, but she is thankful that no lives were lost. Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Senior Fire Officer Mohd Hazmi Zulkafli said they received an emergency call at at 6.17am, and 13 personnel from the Bandar Penawar and Punggai stations were deployed to the scene. "Two terraced houses were partially destroyed, while three cars and a motorcycle were almost completely destroyed, with damage ranging between 50 and 90 per cent," he said. Meanwhile, Penawar assemblywoman Fauziah Misri visited the victims alongside representatives from the Pengerang member of parliament's office. Officers from the Pengerang Municipal Council were also present. Initial aid, including food boxes and cash, was provided. "The Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAINJ) has agreed to cover temporary rental costs for the victims. The Welfare Department will also offer further assistance," she added.

Credit: ITV 4 Faridah had to use her first lifeline to help her answer the £300 question 4 Faridah had to use her third lifeline to help her answer a soap question Credit: ITV Faridah struggled from the start in tonight's episode and had to use her audience life line to answer the £300 question. Jeremy Clarkson asked: "Which of these are traditionally swapped by opposing players at the end of a football match? The choices were Shirts, Shorts, Boots or Socks and not being a big football fan, the audience helped her correctly choose shirts. She then had to use Jeremy as her second lifeline when she was asked to name the thoroughfare that connects Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyrood House. But Faridah made it to her safety net of £1000 by confidently answering the next question that came along. However, the £2000 question confused her, when Jeremy asked: "Which recurring TV soap character has been played by Lisa Riley since 1995." The choices were A. Mandy Dingle, B. Kim Tate, C. Tracy Barlow or D. Sharon Mitchell. Faridah said: "I've got absolutely no clue, I'm not a soap fan." She then decided to use her third lifeline and go 50-50 and was left with A and C - Faridah then took a guess at Mandy Dingle. But we will keep what happened next a surprise so that we don't spoil the show for you. Who Wants to be a Millionaire player with no lifelines forced to take money after struggling with difficult history question - but did you know it? Meanwhile, a past episode saw a player with no lifelines forced to walk away after a difficult history question. June Walker, from Galashiels, got through the first few rounds, but seemed stuck on a tricky history question. With a possible £125,000 up for grabs, there was a lot riding on answering correctly. The question asked: "Which of these was a plot to assassinate Elizabeth I?" A) Rye House Plot, B) Bye Plot, C) Babington Plot and D) Despard Plot." Who has won the jackpot on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Who Wants to Be a Millionaire has offered hundreds of hopeful contestants the chance to become millionaires, but there has only been a handful of lucky winners. There have only been five real winners so far on the show as Charles Ingram, who was the third winner of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? in 2001, had his claim to the prize thrown out because of cheating allegations. The official winners are... Judith Keppel In 2000, garden designer Judith Keppel made quiz show history as she became the first ever winner of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Judith is also the only woman ever to have won the million-pound prize. David Edwards Former physics teacher David became the second contestant to win the top prize in April 2001. Following his success, Edwards went on to compete in both series of Are You an Egghead? in 2008 and 2009. Robert Brydges Oxford-educated banker Robert became the third Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? champion when he won the quiz show several moths after David in 2001. Robert has stayed out of the limelight since his win. Pat Gibson World champion Irish quiz player Pat won the show in 2004. Amazingly Pat had TWO of his lifelines still available for his final question, something no other winner has managed. Ingram Wilcox Ingram came close to losing on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2006 as he had used all his lifelines up at the £32,000 mark, but in a shocking twist he went on to scoop the jackpot. Having used all her lifelines earlier in the show, she was therefore completely on her own. June had an inkling about one option but ultimately decided to play safe. She told Jeremy: "I don't know it well enough. No. Take the money, final answer." As a result, she walked away having won an incredible £64,000. But if you would like to know the answer you can find it here. 4 After going 50/50 Faridah made a guess at Mandy Dingle Credit: ITV Who Wants To Be A Millionaire airs on ITV and ITVX.
