Woman who planned to join terrorist group jailed

A woman has been sentenced to life in prison for terror-related offences after she planned to travel to Afghanistan to join Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP). Farishta Jami, 36, from Stratford-upon-Avon, was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on Thursday, and told she must serve a minimum term of 17 years. She had been found guilty of two counts of engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorism under section five of the Terrorism Act 2006, following a trial at the same court in February. Jami had researched weaponry and how to assemble and disassemble an AK47 rifle, according to Warwickshire Police, which said she was an administrator on several social media groups overseeing the posting and messaging of users. Some of the groups had more than 700 members and disseminated large amounts of propaganda including instructional videos to make devices. Jami's trial heard she also shared graphic and violent extremist material on social media between September 2022 and January 2024. Her flight to Afghanistan for which she had saved was one-way, police said. Head of specialist operation for the force Supt Darren Webster said: "This was a complex case interlinking terrorism and serious criminal offences, and we welcome the result. "Jami's actions had the potential for real world implications and the harm they could have cause cannot be underestimated." New custody image released of woman in niqab because of ‘distress'

A woman found guilty of terror offences has had a second custody image released by police, showing her wearing a niqab, after her defence said she was distressed by an earlier image showing her face, according to reports. Farishta Jami, from Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, was found guilty of two counts of engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorism, after planning to travel to join the affiliate of the so-called Islamic State in Afghanistan, Isis-K. The 36-year-old mother was convicted at Leicester Crown Court on Thursday on charges brought under section 5 of the 2006 Terrorism Act, relating to her conduct between September 2022 and January last year. Warwickshire Police said the court heard Jami was planning to travel to Afghanistan 'to martyr herself' and had saved £1,200 to pay for one-way flights to Afghanistan for herself and her children. Jami had shared graphic and violent extremist material on social media, posting videos, documents and images, and taken part in multiple group chats and channels that support the so-called Islamic State. Police said she had also researched weaponry and gathered information relating to the assembly and disassembly of an AK-47 rifle. Jami was to have been sentenced on Friday and, according to reports, her defence barrister said the initial custody image released by police showing her face caused her distress. On Friday a custody image of Jami wearing a niqab was released by West Midlands Police. Jami's sentencing was adjourned until a later date.

Former school dinner lady planned to join IS

A former school dinner lady has been found guilty of terrorism offences after she planned to travel to join the Islamic State. Farishta Jami, 36, was convicted of two counts of engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorism. A jury heard she was planning to travel to Daesh in Afghanistan to martyr herself and four children. Jami saved £1,200 to pay for one-way flights to join Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), the Mirror reports. Leicester Crown Court heard that when detectives searched her property, they seized several devices; sim cards in a bag stuffed down the side of her bed; cash hidden away; and also found Jami trying to conceal passports. Jami researched weaponry and gathered information in relation to the assembly and disassembly of an AK47 rifle. She also had around 7,000 videos stored, several of which showed children being used as suicide bombers. Her sentencing should have taken place this week, but was adjourned so a pre-sentence report could be prepared by the probation service. Superintendent Darren Webster, head of specialist operations for Warwickshire Police, said: "This was a complex case interlinking terrorism and serious criminal offences, and we welcome the outcome. Jami's actions had the potential for real-world implications, and the harm they could have caused cannot be underestimated. Thankfully, with an excellent partnership between West Midlands Counter Terrorism Police and ourselves, we were able to prevent this." Police issued a second mugshot of Jami after she complained the first picture showed her without a head covering. Police released a fresh custody image of Jami wearing a niqab. Judge Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb said she could not make an order and left it to the media to decide which image to use in publications. Jami was born in Afghanistan and moved to the UK in 2008 to live with her husband, the court was told. They lived in a city in the North West, but she moved south in 2023 after the marriage turned violent. She will now be sentenced on a date to be fixed.
