Beaufort County Schools receives grant for summer lunches
BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — Beaufort County Schools recently received a $20,500 grant from No Kid Hungry to support summer school lunch programs. This initiative, already in place within the district, will benefit from the funding by adding an extra vehicle to help deliver meals to students during the summer months. With school lunches on the mind, second-graders at John Cotten Tayloe School recently participated in a Farm Day event. The students rotated through four educational stations: one where they planted watermelon seeds to take home, another where they learned about dairy farming and milking cows, a tractor ride, and a session focused on local produce from Eastern North Carolina. 'You can't beat eating local—it works for the farmers, and it works for us,' Director of School Nutrition for Beaufort County Schools Joanne Kirven said. 'Very often nowadays, there's a lot of poverty around. Many children might not have experienced some of these things at home.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Lift Bridge has retired its first flagship beer, replacing it with Farm Day
Lift Bridge Brewing has retired its original flagship beer. With the introduction of its new Farm Day golden ale, the Stillwater brewery is letting Farm Girl go to that big mash tun in the sky. Farm Girl, a saison, was first introduced in 2008 and was the first beer it sold on the market. "At Lift Bridge, innovation is at the heart of everything we do," the brewery wrote in an announcement. "As part of our ongoing commitment to bring fresh and exciting options to our fans, we regularly retire older brands to make way for new ones." During the pandemic, Lift Bridge changed the Farm Girl recipe, mellowing the spice in its profile, looking to bolster sales. Farm Day, a 4.8% ABV golden ale that is on shelves now, will take its place as a year-round release. It will be distributed in Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as in parts of North and South Dakota. Meanwhile, Farm Girl is no longer in production, but it's possible there are still cans on shelves around the state if you're looking to get one last taste. As part of the launch, Lift Bridge is donating a portion of proceeds from Farm Day sales throughout May to the Sustainable Farming Association (SFA). "Partnering with SFA is a natural extension of who we are at Lift Bridge — rooted in community, passionate about quality, and committed to doing things the right way," says Lift Bridge co-founder and creative director Brad Glynn. "We've always believed that great beer starts with great ingredients, and that starts with healthy farms and the people who care for them. Supporting sustainable agriculture isn't just good for the planet — it's good for all of us."
