Family of four remanded for supermarket theft
MUAR: Four members of a family were remanded at the magistrates' court today, suspected of stealing essential goods from a supermarket in Parit Jawa here since the middle of this month. They include a 52-year-old mother, her son and daughter aged 33 and 27 respectively, and the woman's younger brother, aged 43. Magistrate Fatin Dalilah Khalid issued a four-day remand order from today until Friday to allow for police investigations under Section 380 of the Penal Code. According to reports, police received a complaint from the supermarket management after noticing the family pushing a trolley filled with goods. Investigations revealed that one of the suspects — the daughter, who also worked at the supermarket — was suspected of masterminding the theft. The woman allegedly pretended to scan the goods as though they had been paid for by her family. The first incident reportedly occurred on May 14, followed by the second and third on May 24 and 25. Initial investigations found that all the stolen items were placed in two trolleys daily, with the incidents taking place between 6am and 7am. The suspects allegedly entered the supermarket pretending to shop, before taking the items to a checkout counter managed by the daughter to make payment. However, the ruse was uncovered after management reviewed closed-circuit television footage from the premises. Checks of the store's sales system also found no records or receipts of any payments made by the suspects. The supermarket suffered an estimated loss of RM3,000 due to the theft.

Peeping Tom gets jail after skipping fine
MUAR: A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to five months in prison after failing to pay a RM2,800 fine for peeping at a woman in a public toilet earlier this month. Muhammad Nazrullah Basir, who is unemployed, was initially fined after pleading guilty before Magistrate Fatin Dalilah Khalid. He was accused of peering under the door of a women's toilet at Tanjung Emas at 9.30am on April 14, based on a complaint by a 26-year-old woman. The offence falls under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine, or both. According to case facts, the woman screamed after spotting him, prompting the accused to flee in a Perodua Kancil. A toilet attendant who witnessed the incident lodged a police report. Muhammad Nazrullah was arrested on April 21. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Amieerah Alludin prosecuted, while Tee Xi Ran from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) represented the accused.
