Police probe threatening social media post referencing 2022 Fazil murder

Mangaluru: Police in Mangaluru have launched an investigation into a social media post that appears to make a threatening reference to the high-profile murder of Fazil, a young man who was hacked to death in Surathkal in 2022. The post surfaced on the Instagram account beary_of_ullala and featured photographs of Fazil with the caption 'Miss You Faasil' in a reel. Authorities were alerted when a user, posting from the handle bazigar8614, commented ominously under the reel: 'This is not the end, four more to go.' Taking serious note of the potentially provocative nature of the post, Ullal Police registered a case under sections 196 and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case (Crime No. 63/2025) has since been handed over to the Mangaluru City CEN Crime Police Station for further inquiry. Police said they have already traced a follower of the Instagram account, identified as Mohammad Akram from Haleyangady near Mangaluru. He is currently being questioned. Officials have indicated that further action will be based on digital forensics and interrogation findings as the probe continues.

BJP leader CT Ravi criticises Karnataka government over Suhas Shetty murder case

ANI 06 May 2025, 13:36 GMT+10 Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 6 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader CT Ravi on Tuesday criticised the Congress-led Karnataka government over the murder case of Suhas Shetty, and stated that they give compensation to cow thieves but not to patriots and Hindu activists. Ravi added that Speaker UT Khader said that the Fazil's family had no role in Suhas's murder, even though the investigation is still underway. He also said that while Minister Zameer Ahmed says he is ready to fight Pakistan if the Prime Minister permits, he should first act against those who shouted 'Pakistan Zindabad' slogans inside the Vidhana Soudha. Speaking to the mediapersons, BJP leader CT Ravi said, 'The Congress government gives compensation to cow thieves but not to patriots and Hindu activists. How did they know that Suhas was a goon in the murder of Fazil? Why are such claims being made? Why did Speaker Khader quickly say that Fazil's family had no role in Suhas's murder, even though the police are still investigating? There is doubt about the family's involvement. Minister Zameer Ahmed says he wants to fight Pakistan if the Prime Minister allows it, but first, he should act against those shouting 'Pakistan Zindabad' slogans in the Vidhana Soudha. Our soldiers are ready to face Pakistan; we must first deal with enemies within.' He concluded by saying that the soldiers are ready to face Pakistan, but we must first deal with enemies who are within the country. Earlier, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara informed that eight people have been arrested in connection with the Suhas Shetty murder case. He said the state government planned to form an anti-communal task force to ensure action against those who indulge in communal activities. Suhas Shetty, the main accused in the Fazil murder case, was killed by a group of unidentified men in Mangaluru around 8:30 pm on May 1, as per the Mangaluru Police Commissioner. (ANI)

Who offered ₹5 lakh to kill Suhas Shetty? Karnataka police reveal Mangaluru murder plot

The Mangaluru City Police on Saturday said that Adil Mehroof, brother of murder victim Fazil, allegedly paid ₹5 lakh, ₹3 lakh in advance, to a group of men to kill 32-year-old Suhas Shetty, The News Minute reported. The police said the murder was planned in retaliation for an earlier attempted attack on one of the accused by Suhas and his associates, the report added Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, addressing the media on May 3, said the crime was 'partly motivated by revenge' and ruled out any communal motive. 'There is no evidence so far to suggest that the act was communal or linked to any banned organisation,' he said. (Also Read: How Mangaluru rowdy sheeter Suhas Shetty was hacked to death: Chilling details emerge) The investigation has led to the arrest of eight people so far, while two others have been identified but are yet to be taken into custody. According to police, the accused had made two earlier unsuccessful attempts to target Suhas before finally executing the plan in April. Suhas was chased in a car, cornered, and stabbed to death. He later died at AJ Shetty Hospital. Police said that the conspiracy was led by Abdul Safwan, a resident of Shantigudde, who had survived a 2023 murder attempt allegedly carried out by Suhas. Safwan discussed the matter with his friends and eventually connected with Adil Mehroof through a mutual contact. The group then finalised the murder plot. Police say the accused include individuals from Chikkamagaluru, and that while some of them have prior criminal records, others are being investigated for past involvement in crimes. The killing comes nearly two years after Fazil's murder in July 2022, which followed the death of BJP youth leader Praveen Nettaru. Those incidents had triggered communal unrest in coastal Karnataka. Fazil's murder is currently being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has arrested 21 people so far. Meanwhile, the police have registered three new cases of stabbings of Muslim men in the city following Suhas's killing. Investigations into those cases are ongoing. Siddaramaiah denies knowledge of ‘link' between aid to Fazil and Suhas Shetty murder

Chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said he had no prior knowledge of reports that a portion of the ₹25 lakh ex-gratia compensation paid to the family of Mohammed Fazil, who was killed in 2022, was allegedly misused to fund the murder of right-wing activist Suhas Shetty. He added that he would seek details from home minister G Parameshwara and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. 'I have to look into it. I don't have any information. Dinesh Gundu Rao and home minister (G Parameshwara) had been there. I haven't spoken to them yet. I will say after talking to them,' Siddaramaiah told reporters while responding to a question about the police investigations, suggesting that ₹5 lakh from the compensation might have been paid to the contract killers of Shetty. While the BJP didn't issue a statement claiming this, some reports alleged that the money paid by Congress was used to fund the murder. Suhas Shetty, facing five criminal cases in Mangaluru and Dakshina Kannada districts, including two charges of murder, was hacked to death on May 1 in the Kinnikambla area under Bajpe police station limits in Mangaluru. He was the prime accused in the 2022 murder of 23-year-old Fazil, a temporary worker at HPCL, who was attacked by four masked men in Surathkal on July 28, 2022. That killing had taken place just two days after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth worker Praveen Nettaru was murdered, igniting widespread protests and unrest across the region. The previous BJP-led government under Basavaraj Bommai did not offer any aid to Fazil's family following the incident. But in 2023, after the Congress government came to power, financial assistance was extended to four families impacted by the 2022 killing, including Fazil's. Police said that Suhas Shetty was travelling with five of his associates near Kinnikambla in Bajpe area of Mangaluru on Thursday night when their vehicle was intercepted by unidentified assailants, who then dragged the 30-year-old out of the vehicle and hacked him to death. Police said that eight people, including Fazil's brother, have been arrested in connection with Shetty's murder so far. The arrested individuals are Abdul Safwan, Niyaz Ahmed, Mohammad Muzzammil, Khalandar Shafi, Adil Mehrooz, Mohammad Rizwan, Ranjit, and Nagaraj. The Karnataka police revealed that Fazil's brother, Adil Mehroof, offered ₹5 lakh to a group of men to carry out the murder of Suhas Shetty, with ₹3 lakh paid as an advance. As political tensions mounted, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya urged Union home minister Amit Shah to hand over the investigation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). In his letter, Surya wrote, 'There is growing suspicion that similar radical forces could be behind this incident as well. A central agency-led inquiry would guarantee a thorough, impartial investigation.' He also referred to previous cases in which the NIA had exposed the role of banned groups like the Popular Front of India. Parameshwara, however, rejected the demand for a central probe. 'It is their (BJP's) opinion. Our view is that our police are doing their job very well. Eight people have been arrested in this connection, and the investigation is in progress,' he said, adding, 'At this stage, there is no need to hand over the case to the NIA.' He also addressed criticism regarding the government's decision not to visit Shetty's family. 'Please know that this is a murder case. There were five criminal cases against him. That's the reason that no one from the government, I mean the public representatives, either me or anyone else, met them,' Parameshwara said. Still, he assured that the legal process would be followed: 'Already we have done our work and we have arrested eight people.' The murder sparked unrest in Mangaluru, with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) calling for a bandh on Friday. Many shops remained shut. In response, Parameshwara and Dinesh Gundu Rao rushed to the city and held high-level discussions with police commissioner Anupam Agrawal and deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan to review the law and order situation. To curb the growing communal tension in coastal Karnataka, the CM signalled the possibility of forming a special force. 'I will speak to the home minister about it (task force) and then I will let you know,' Siddaramaiah said. Parameshwara confirmed that such a mechanism was being considered. 'A police wing was required to identify and subdue anti-social elements,' he said, adding that an anti-communal task force would be constituted on a permanent basis for the region.

Suhas Shetty murder: Siddaramaiah says unaware of Rs 25 lakh murder plot by Fazil's kin

Bengaluru, May 4 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said he was not fully aware of the details surrounding the shocking revelation by Mangaluru police that the brother of Fazil, who was murdered in 2022, had allegedly used Rs 25 lakh in government compensation to hire contract killers to murder Suhas Shetty, the main accused in Fazil's murder case. "I am not aware of the details. I will look into the matter after consulting with Home Minister G Parameshwara and Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, who both visited Mangaluru the previous day," Siddaramaiah told reporters in Haveri when asked about the case. According to police, Fazil's brother had allegedly misused the compensation awarded by the state government following Fazil's communal murder to finance a revenge killing. The Chief Minister, while speaking at a separate event, also lashed out at the BJP over what he called their "hypocrisy" on the issue of the caste survey. "Those who previously criticised me for conducting a caste survey, saying it would lead to inter-caste conflicts, are now wholeheartedly welcoming the Centre's decision to conduct one," he said. "Whatever Modi does is acceptable to their party members. Earlier, they would make political statements without basing them on reality. Doesn't it show that their stance is driven by politics rather than facts?" Later in Hubballi, Siddaramaiah took aim at Union Minister Pralhad Joshi over his reported remarks on irregularities in the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) examinations, while accusing the Centre of stalling the Mahadayi river project. "Did Joshi speak about Mahadayi? Whose responsibility is it to give environmental clearance? He is a very important minister; he should take responsibility," he said. "How many times should we submit a memorandum? We wrote letters, I even visited many times." He further alleged that the Prime Minister was withholding clearance fearing backlash in Goa. "Calling an all-party meeting is one part, but if we have to start the Mahadayi project, we need environmental clearance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not giving permission out of Goa's fear, and Pralhad Joshi is not speaking out," he alleged. UNI BDN RN
