Fazza Para Badminton concludes with hosts richer by experience
13 May 2025 01:05 KUUMAR SHYAM (DUBAI)The sixth Fazza Para Badminton International in Dubai concluded with South Korea on top while the UAE squad finished with their best performance to date at the conclusion of the four-day event at the premises of the Shabab Al Ahli Al Bedwawi, who has become the main hope for the national team in just three years of playing para badminton, said: "There were many learnings to take – about technique, shuttle control and confidence. The feeling is very strong to go back to training and improve."Al Bedwawi, 26, went up to the quarter-final stage in the men's singles WH2 category where he lost to a 48-year-old seasoned rival and the much-higher ranked Jeong Jaie-gun from Gyeongju, South Emirati showed the right spirit after the match when he said: "It was a good game; I gave my best. I want to have that kind of confidence like him (Jeong)". The trainee athlete from the People of Determination club, Dubai, trainee, also represents the UAE in wheelchair the host squad and the intensity shown by the competitors overall, Thani Juma Berregad, the chairman of the organising committee, said: "Our players' effort and training were evident in the matches. They have tried to match the level of the game of the Paralympic champions here. I'm very delighted to witness their development and performance like these have will boost their confidence. Definitely, the championship was a big learning experience for the team."The UAE coach Aditya Singh also appreciated the clear improvement for the local players. "Compared to the last Fazza Championships, all the players have made significant improvement in their overall game – technique, approach, confidence, and strokes. We have had a good few weeks of preparation ahead of the Championships and the results paid off well."Meanwhile, the medal tally was dominated by South Korea, who hauled in six gold medals, while Malaysia came bouncing hard on the final day for three gold medals which put them in the second spot on the Korean shuttlers Sooyoung Yu and Gyeoul Jung claimed two gold medals each, adding the men's and women's Wheelchair (WH2) finals respectively. Their compatriot Shin Kyung Hwan reeled in the other two gold medals in the standing events. He won the men's singles Standing SL4 as well as the men's doubles SL3-SL4 event, pairing with Joo Dongjae for the latter. Following the East Asian sides were Türkiye, India, England and Indonesia who grabbed a gold medal each.

South Korea finish on top at Dubai Para Badminton event
The 6th Fazza Para Badminton International – Dubai 2025 concluded with South Korea finishing on top of the podium with six gold medals amid loud cheers and strong team support at the Shabab Al Ahli Club on Sunday. Promising shuttlers Sooyoung Yu and Gyeoul Jung claimed two gold medals each winning the men's and women's Wheelchair (WH2) finals. The highlight of the final day was Sooyoung's upset win over Paris 2024 bronze medallist and senior compatriot Kim Jung Jun in a nerve wrecking men's singles WH2 match that lasted 60 minutes. Sooyoung rallied from a game down to win 19-21, 25-23, 22-20 over his senior compatriot Jung Jun, much to the praise from the senior player. 'It was a great match — we knew each other very well and we tried to play like we do in the practice matches. Kim played better than practice today — I feel that legend is still alive,' said Sooyoung who won the first singles gold medal at the Fazza Dubai Championships in his third appearance. Meanwhile, he paired with Park Haeseong to beat legendary players Jung Jun and Choi Jungman 21-16, 21-13. In the women's events, unseeded Gyeoul shocked top seed and veteran player Emine Seckin from Turkiye in straight games 21-18, 21-11 for the women's WH2 title. Later, Gyeoul and Haeseong got the better of Turkish and Italian duo of Seckin and Yuri Ferrigno 21-16, 21-13. Two gold for Malaysian top seed: Among other top names, world number 1 Cheah Liek Hou clinched two gold medals for Malaysia winning the men's singles and men's doubles Standing Upper - SU5 events. While Cheah defeated compatriot Muhammed Fareez Anuar in straight games 21-12, 22-20 in the singles event, both the players paired up to win the doubles crown against India's promising duo of Hardik Makkar and Ruthick Ragupathi 21-18, 21-15. Playing her usual come-from-behind-winning game, Ukrainian Oksana Kozyna overcame France's Milena Surreau, who was playing her first match in the category, 24-22, 17-21, 21-10 in the women's singles Standing Lower – SL3 final. Malaysia took on more gold when Muhammed Ikhwan Ramli staged a remarkable comeback to win the men's wheelchair WH1 final over Korean Paralympic silver medallist Choi Jungman 13-21, 21-18, 21-6. Turkiye, India and England were the other nations who took a gold medal each at the sixth edition of the championships which was competed by around 150 players from 30 nations. Thani Juma Berregad, Fazza Championships Chairman, expressed his immense pride and admiration for the remarkable level of competition at the Fazza Championships. He was deeply impressed by the intensity, energy, and world-class performances displayed by the athletes who have gathered in Dubai for this elite event.

Dubai: Paralympic stars to vie for glory at Fazza Para Athletics Grand Prix
Top para-athletes including Paralympic and world champions will gather in Dubai to showcase an extraordinary show of grit and excellence when the 16th Fazza Para Athletics Grand Prix – Dubai 2025 runs from 10-13 February. The season opener of the 2025 edition of the Fazza International Championships for People of Determination will witness participation from around 400 para-athletes from 52 countries, it was announced at a press conference to launch the event here on Tuesday. The championships will also be the season opener for the Grand Prix calendar of the World Para Athletics, the world body for the sport. Some of the top international names include Switzerland's wheelchair racing legend Marcel Hug, Belgium's two-time gold medallist in Paris 2024 Maxime Carabin, China's nine-time Paralympic champion Wen Xiaoyan, who has four gold medals from Paris 2024 and Wu Qing, also a multiple-time Paralympic gold medallist from China. The hosts UAE will be represented by 60 para -athletes including Paralympic stars and several newcomers aiming to get their international classification at the four-day event. Majid Al-Usaimi, Director of the Organising Committee of the Fazza International Championships for People of Determination, thanked Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his great interest and support for People of Determination. He also acknowledged the Dubai Sports Council and 25 partners and sponsors' continuous support to achieve the club's desired goal. 'Reaching the number one position requires an integrated vision from the wise leadership to achieve national aspirations and sustainable future trends for creating champions and raising the flag of the country in international events,' Al-Usaimi said. 'The Fazza Championships have remained the focus of development in the Para sports in all levels and have had positive impact for Dubai to continue its great journey in organising various international championships." The Director of Championships also confirmed that they organisers have completed all their preparations for the event and they are confident of delivering a fantastic championship. Among others present on the occasion were Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council, and Emirati para-athlete Rawda Abdullah who will be competing in her second Fazza Para Athletics Grand Prix in two weeks' time.
