Are delivery drivers required to ring your doorbell? We checked. Here's what we found out
Ordering items online is a regular habit for most Americans. While the tendency is to focus on the high volume of packages being delivered during the holidays, keeping packages safe and away from porch pirates is an ongoing concern. We checked with the four major delivery services to find out what their policies are when it comes to packages coming to your home. Here's what we found out. "Drivers delivering on behalf of Amazon won't typically knock on your door or ring your doorbell, unless a signature or one-time password is required," Amazon said on its website. "You can redirect eligible shipments to an Amazon Hub Locker using your Amazon Shopping App. Go to Your Orders, select your order, then choose Send to a nearby pickup point," the company said. "Carriers are required to knock on the customer's door or ring their doorbell only if the customer's signature is required for the release of their package," according to an email from a Postal Service spokesperson. "Our carrier's scanning technology provides our customers with detailed updates concerning their package delivery, such as, the delivery location or if it was left with an individual. Customers are able to monitor the tracking on their packages and signup for email and text tracking by visiting our website at Another option is Informed Delivery, which provides images of incoming mail arriving soon and updates about incoming and outbound packages. Customers will received notifications via a daily email or can go to the USPS dashboard. FedEx responded with this emailed statement: "Providing customers with outstanding service is our top priority. This includes making sure our customers receive packages safely and securely. In recent years we've introduced innovative visibility technologies to give our customers added peace of mind when it comes to the reliable delivery of their packages. "Our flexible solutions like Picture Proof of Delivery, FedEx Delivery Manager, and the FedEx mobile app offer customers a convenient experience, with more control over the timing and location of their deliveries. "Picture Proof of Delivery (PPOD) provides customers with peace of mind when they receive a photo confirmation that their shipments have arrived. It's offered for all residential, non-signature package deliveries without requiring an account or login." The FedEx Delivery Manager allows you to: Keep track of your package, including photo proof when it's delivered Redirect a package to a retail pickup location free of charge, even if it's en route Use your phone or computer to virtually sign for a package in advance Relay delivery instructions to the driver, including where to leave the package, asking not to ring the doorbell or knock on the door Place a vacation hold on packages "UPS drivers may knock on the door or ring the bell when making a delivery but are not required to. They are trained to leave packages out of sight and out of the weather whenever possible," according to an email from a company spokesperson. UPS My Choice allows consumers to receive their deliveries where and when they want and receive text or email alerts letting them know when packages are on the way. "UPS My Choice enables consumers to provide instructions for where they want their UPS driver to leave their deliveries, such as at their back door, on the side of their home, or with a neighbor. Consumers can also receive a delivery photo to confirm the exact location of their delivery and set up alternative delivery locations like their workplace, a neighbor's or relative's house, or a UPS Access Point location." The UPS Access Point provides more than 15,000 retail locations for a package to be delivered instead of your home. In April 2024, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed HB549, which increased the penalties for porch piracy: Theft of property in an amount less than $40 is a first-degree misdemeanor. A subsequent violation is a third-degree felony. Theft of property valued at $40 or more is a third-degree felony. Before replacing Marco Rubio as a U.S. senator, then-Attorney General Ashley Moody offered these tips to help protect your packages from porch pirates: Do not leave packages unattended. Schedule deliveries at a time when someone will be home or ask a neighbor to take the item inside. If purchasing online from a retailer with a physical location nearby, consider shipping it there instead. Retailers will require proof of purchase or identification before releasing packages to an individual. Install security cameras and signs alerting potential porch pirates that the property is under surveillance to deter thieves from stealing. Opt in to tracking details with delivery services to monitor packages and receive alerts as soon as the item arrives.
