Will Rory McIlroy play the 2025 St. Jude Championship? Why he might skip FedExCup event

The 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship is set for Aug. 7-10 at TPC Southwind. The 70-man field won't be set until a week before that. Will that field include 2025 Masters champion Rory McIlroy? Though McIlroy is the No. 2-ranked golfer in the world and is beloved by fans, there's a chance he won't be involved in the first leg of the FedExCup playoffs. Advertisement There are a few reasons to believe McIlroy might not play in the Memphis event, and it starts with what he said last year. "I'll probably not play the first playoff event in Memphis," McIlroy told The Telegraph last November. "I mean, I finished basically dead last there this year (tied for 68th in a 70-man field) and only moved down one spot in the playoff standings.' Then there was the announcement last week from the PGA Tour that the stroke advantage in the FedExCup playoffs would be going away. Instead of giving golfers with the most points an advantage in the Tour Championship, all golfers will start from par. In the past, the stroke advantage had made the first two FedExCup events more important because it determined who got which stroke advantages. And then there's the fact that McIlroy has said he plans to play less in 2025 and made headlines last weekend when he decided to skip the Memorial Tournament, a PGA Tour signature event. Advertisement McIlroy is expected to play in this weekend's Canadian Open. The FedEx St. Jude Championship is the first leg of the FedExCup playoffs. The top 70 golfers in the standings make it to Memphis, while the top 50 advance to the next week and the top 30 make it to the Tour Championship. Rory McIlroy's history at FedEx St. Jude Championship McIlroy has been up and down at TPC Southwind in the past few years. He finished tied for 68th in 2024 but was tied for third in 2023. He missed the cut in 2022. Hideki Matsuyama won last year's FedEx St. Jude Championship. Reach sports writer Jonah Dylan at or on X @thejonahdylan. Scottie Scheffler May be Going Home amid Back Injury at Colonial

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler's form in recent weeks suggests that the only thing that can stop him from having a season similar to his last is injury. Alarm bells went off in the golf world on Friday about just that possibility. Scheffler was seen wincing in pain after his tee shot on the second hole at Colonial Country Club during the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge. It was hole No. 11 of the day for him, as he started on the 10th tee. In the video shared on social media, the World No. 1 can be seen doing his footwork (the famous 'Scheffler Shuffle') in a much deeper way than usual when executing the shot while groaning. He then brings his hands to his waist and leans forward. He finished with one birdie and one bogey over the last eight holes. Prior to this situation on the 2nd hole, Scheffler had carded one birdie and two bogeys. MoreHis 1-over score for the round put him at 1-under through 36 holes and in serious danger of missing the cut for the first time since the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship. Currently, the cut line for the Charles Schwab Challenge is projected to be exactly 1-under. But there are dozens of players still out on the course. So, there is a good chance that line may move before the end of the day. More Golf: PGA Tour Rookie Uses Knicks Collapse to Fuel Strong Start at Colonial

PGA Tour Announces Big Jordan Spieth News

On Sunday, May 4, Jordan Spieth entered the final round of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch trailing leader Scottie Scheffler by 13 shots. While he could have just mailed it in in the final round of the tournament, Spieth came out firing with birdies on four of his first six holes. By the end of the round he tallied nine birdies to go along with nine pars to fire a final round 62 to end the tournament at 19-under. Advertisement Unfortunately for Spieth, Scheffler nearly matched his final round with a 63 to win the tournament by eight shots over Erik van Rooyen. It wasn't all bad news for the three-time major champion, though, as he hired his lowest round on the PGA Tour in four years. "Jordan Spieth closes with bogey-free 9-under 62 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson. It is his lowest 18-hole score on TOUR since the 2021 FedEx St. Jude Championship (2nd Round), when he shot 62," the PGA Tour announced. After flying up the leaderboard to finish in fourth place, Spieth talked about Scheffler's dominance. "What he's doing is very inspiring, what he's been doing is inspiring given it wasn't that long ago I was definitely better than him, and now I'm definitely not right now and I hate admitting that about anybody," Spieth, who was partnered with Scheffler for the first two rounds, said. "But I just watched it, those first two rounds, and I'm like, 'I gotta get better.'" Advertisement Spieth made it clear he's jealous of anyone who wins a given tournament, but he has a special relationship with Scheffler given the two grew up playing in Texas together. "It's very inspiring. Obviously it's at this event... but it could be anywhere. I'm not like jealous of him winning this event over any other, I'm jealous of anyone that wins any week. I wanna be the person there (who wins), and that's my drive. "When he does it, it's nice because one, I just played with him these two rounds, but I'm also playing with him at home. I've got more of a guage on exactly where I need to be when I'm playing a lot of golf with him." Related: Rory McIlroy, Wife Make Telling Decision After the Masters

PGA Tour Makes Jordan Spieth Announcement on Sunday

Jordan Spieth put together an outstanding Round 4 performance at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson tournament on Sunday, notching a bogey-free 62 at TPC Craig Ranch. With this stellar outing, Spieth skyrocketed up the leaderboard to notch a 19-under finish to the tournament. The 31-year-old PGA Tour star shot under par in each of his four rounds, recording a 69 in Round 1 and a pair of 67s in Rounds 2 and 3. Advertisement Sunday's 9-under 62 ties the lowest round of Spieth's PGA Tour career. The last time he achieved this feat was during the second round of the 2021 FedEx St. Jude Championship. The PGA Tour took to social media to react to Spieth's accomplishment on Sunday. "62 to tie his career low score on TOUR! @JordanSpieth is surging just two weeks before his bid for the career Grand Slam," the PGA Tour wrote on X. "Jordan Spieth closes with bogey-free 9-under 62 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson. It is his lowest 18-hole score on TOUR since the 2021 FedEx St. Jude Championship (2nd Round), when he shot 62," the tour added in a separate post. Spieth accomplished this 9-under 62 with nine birdies and nine pars. If the current leaderboard stands, he'll finish T-3 alongside Sam Stevens. Jordan Spieth lines up his putt on the 12th green during the final round of the Open Championship golf tournament at Royal Troon. Jack Gruber-Imagn Images This incredible final round gives Spieth some solid momentum heading into the 2025 PGA Championship, where the three-time major champion is going after the career grand slam at Quail Hollow. Spieth already has wins in the Masters (2015), U.S. Open (2015) and The Open Championship (2017). The 2025 PGA Championship will begin on May 15.
