Germany's Mannheim marks anniversary of policeman stabbed to death
The city of Mannheim in south-western Germany commemorated slain police officer Rouven Laur on Saturday in the market square where he was killed in a knife attack one year ago. Regional Interior Minister Thomas Strobl, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Mannheim Mayor Christian Specht unveiled a memorial plaque commemorating the events of May 31, 2024. A plaque in memory of the 29-year-old police officer was also presented. "Anyone who attacks our police officers attacks the rule of law and ultimately all of us," Strobl stressed in his remarks. It is necessary to protect those who protect society, he added. "We pause to remember an exemplary and courageous police officer who gave his life in the service of our society," Mayor Specht said. "The market square, the scene of the crime, has become a place of silent remembrance – embedded in the heart of our city," Specht added. Officer's family speaks out Laur's family also spoke through the mayor. The relatives hoped that the 29-year-old's death would not have been in vain. Ultimately, it is not knives that kill people, but the people who choose to use them to commit violence, they said. A total of 1,500 people were on hand for an interfaith peace prayer. Local clergy from the Roman Catholic and Protestant Churches as well as from the Jewish, Muslim and Alevite communities took part in the service. Trial launched in February The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office is convinced that the now 26-year-old suspected Islamist perpetrator identified as Sulaiman A injured six people with a knife in the attack in Mannheim, namely five participants in a rally organized by the anti-Islam Citizens' Movement Pax Europa (BPE) and Laur. The police officer succumbed to his serious injuries two days later. The trial of the alleged Islamist, who is charged with murder and attempted murder, has been taking place at the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court since February. Pax Europa had initially registered their own vigil for Saturday in Mannheim. Registration for the event was withdrawn, however, municipal officials said.

Three Ukrainians arrested over planned sabotage for Russia in Germany
Three Ukrainian nationals have been arrested in Germany and Switzerland on suspicion of planning arson and explosive attacks on railway freight transport in Germany on behalf of Russia, German prosecutors said on Wednesday. The suspects are said to have told several persons allegedly commissioned by Russia that they were willing to carry out the acts of sabotage, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe said. The men were arrested at separate locations in the western German city of Cologne and the southern city of Konstanz as well as in Switzerland. According to prosecutors, the Ukrainians were planning to "send parcels from Germany to recipients in Ukraine containing explosive or incendiary devices that would ignite during transport." According to the investigation, Russian state actors could be behind the case. The first of the three arrests was made in Cologne on May 9, with the second suspect taken into custody in Konstanz the following day. Both men are in pre-trial detention. The third suspect was arrested in the Swiss canton of Thurgau on Tuesday and will be brought before an investigative judge following his extradition to Germany, according to the statement. The suspect arrested in Cologne posted two test parcels in the cities at the end of March which prosecutors said contained GPS trackers to help scout potential routes, among other things. He was said to have been commissioned by one of the other two men, while the third person is said to have helped assemble the packages. The two young men arrested in Germany were not working, according to the current state of the investigation. Prosecutors believe the men were likely motivated by financial gains, but there have been indications that a pro-Russian mentality also played a role, including previous contacts inside Russia. German intelligence services believe Russian actors are hiring people to carry out espionage and sabotage operations across the country, with the deployment of professional spies being made increasingly difficult due to sanctions and increased vigilance amid Moscow's war on Ukraine. In October, German intelligence officials said an act of sabotage believed to be linked to Russia came close to causing a plane crash in Germany last year. The incident in July saw a package catch fire at a DHL logistics centre in the eastern city of Leipzig, setting a cargo container alight. In a separate case, three German-Russian nationals were charged with spying for Moscow in December. The man at the centre of the indictment is said to have discussed sabotage operations on German soil with a Russian agent and agreed to carry out explosive and arson attacks on industrial sites and infrastructure used by the military. According to prosecutors, this was an attempt to undermine the military aid provided by Germany to Ukraine.

German authorities raid group accused of plotting against Eritrean government
BERLIN — German authorities carried out raids across six states on Wednesday targeting individuals suspected of involvement in Brigade N'Hamedu, a group accused of attempting to overthrow the government of Eritrea. According to a statement from the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office, the group is considered a 'domestic terrorist organization' under German law, with 17 identified suspects believed to hold senior roles in its German branch, which has been active since at least 2022. The prosecutor's office said the group is part of 'an internationally-connected network that intends to topple the Eritrean government'. Brigade N'Hamedu has allegedly orchestrated violent clashes at Eritrean events in Germany, including Eritrea Festivals in Giessen on 20 August 2022 and 7–8 August 2023, as well as a seminar in Stuttgart in September 2023. According to the statement, the suspects regard violence against German state institutions and police officers as 'legitimate means', particularly at gatherings supported by the Eritrean government. In these incidents, numerous officers were injured. In total, 19 properties were searched across Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Rhineland-Palatinate. A parallel search was also conducted in Denmark. More than 200 officers from federal and state law enforcement were involved in the operation. No arrests have been reported yet. The prosecutor's office also revealed that another alleged senior figure in Brigade N'Hamedu, active in both the Netherlands and Germany, was recently sentenced to several years in prison by a Dutch court for his role in clashes in The Hague on 17 February 2024. Eritrea is widely regarded as one of the world's most repressive regimes. In recent years, people who fled the country have disrupted festivals organized by the Eritrean diaspora in Europe and North America. Some say these protests are aimed at the Eritrean government, while others claim the events may instead raise money to support it. — Euronews
