"Developed an artificial education model': Delhi CM Rekha Gupta lashes out at AAP over condition of schools

New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday held a meeting with the principals of government schools and lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for developing an artificial education model, further stating that the education policy of the AAP government was aimed at a wrong direction. 'They developed an artificial education model. Haiderpur village is a heavily populated area in this Vidhan Sabha, but there is not a single school that teaches science. Where should those students who want to study science go? You can see the direction in which their education policy was aimed at, if they could not provide a single science school in the last 11 years of their governance... There is a shortage of staff in most schools...' the CM said, speaking to the media. She further assured that staff recruitment was being done to fill in vacancies properly, further stating that 75 PM-SHRI schools would be established better than private schools. 'We are ensuring recruitment is done properly and all vacancies are filled... 75 PM-SHRI schools will be made, and they will be better than private schools...' she further added. Minister Parvesh Verma also took a jibe at AAP's chief Arvind Kejriwal for making big claims of the redevelopment of schools and their education policy but not incorporating them. 'This building was constructed in 2018, and Arvind Kejriwal made big claims of redevelopment of schools and their education policy. They have just temporarily covered the gap between these two buildings with a sheet and screwed it. You see this huge fault in the architecture,' Verma said speaking to the media. Meanwhile, on June 5, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Atishi had written a letter to the CM over the 'uncontrollable' fees of the private schools and demanded that the Fee Regulation Bill should be presented in the Assembly during a special session. In her letter to the Delhi CM, Atishi said that the Bill should also be referred to the Select Committee, which will seek the opinion of the parents. 'The Government should immediately call a Special Session of the Assembly and table the Fee Regulation bill. The Bill should then be referred to a Select Committee, with members from both the BJP and AAP. The Select Committee should do a large-scale public consultation involving all stakeholders. Only after this, the final draft of the Bill, after incorporating all changes, should be passed by the Assembly,' Atishi said. (ANI)

BJP must place bill regulating private school fees in House: LoP in Delhi Assembly Atishi

NEW DELHI: Amid the ongoing controversy over arbitrary fee hikes by private schools in Delhi, the AAP on Thursday accused the BJP-led Delhi government over its decision to bring an ordinance on regulation of school fees, saying that it rejects this route of bypassing the legislative process and public consultation and demanded a special session of the Assembly. Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Atishi, claimed that the BJP was attempting to sneak in the Fee Regulation Bill via an ordinance, bypassing the legislative process. She demanded that the bill be introduced in the Assembly, referred to a Select Committee and passed only after incorporating feedback from parents. Atishi expressed concern over the secrecy surrounding the bill, accusing the BJP of shielding private schools rather than supporting parents. 'Since the BJP formed the government in Delhi, private schools have started looting the common people. They are increasing fees on various excuses like AC charges, activity fees, and more,' Atishi wrote on her X account.

Atishi writes to Delhi CM over private schools fee hike, demands Fee Regulation Bill in Assembly

New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Atishi, on Thursday wrote a letter to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta over the 'uncontrollable' fees of private schools and demanded that the Fee Regulation Bill should be presented in the Assembly during a special session. 'If the Bill is brought as an Ordinance-without any debate or public consultation- it will just confirm the suspicion of the people of Delhi that the BJP Government is protecting the interests of private schools, not the parents,' the LoP further said. In a post on X, Atishi alleged that earlier, a bill was brought to the cabinet, but was kept hidden. 'Ever since the BJP government came into power, the fees of private schools have increased uncontrollably, and the government has not taken any action. A bill was brought in the cabinet, but it was kept hidden and no opinion was taken. Now, the Education Minister @ashishsood_bjp says that the bill will be brought through an ordinance. Why this law through the back door? Does the government want to protect private schools?' Atishi said. Earlier in May, the Delhi Cabinet approved the Delhi School Education Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees Bill, 2025, bringing relief to thousands of students and parents across the capital. Addressing growing concerns over frequent and unregulated fee increases by private schools, the Delhi Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta cleared the bill, which is expected to apply to 1,677 private schools in the city. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the government has swiftly acted in response to the widespread panic among students and parents regarding the hikes in school fees. (ANI)

Fee bill process not transparent, says Atishi in letter to Delhi CM

New Delhi Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi on Wednesday, in a letter to chief minister Rekha Gupta, alleged that the process behind approving the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2025, was non-transparent. Atishi demanded immediate relief for parents facing 'arbitrary fee hikes' in 2025-26. 'If BJP Govt truly has honest intentions behind Fee Regulation Bill, it must order private schools to roll back excessive & arbitrary fee hikes immediately,' she said in the letter, a copy of which was accessed by HT. In response, spokesperson for the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Praveen Shankar Kapoor dismissed Atishi's allegations as 'political frustrations'. 'For 10 years, Atishi spoke a lot on education system reforms but never acted to regulate fee structure of Delhi's private school while Rekha Gupta-led BJP government has brought a bill in less then three months to regulate fee structures,' he said. The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday approved the draft of the bill, a legislation CM Gupta termed a 'bold and historic' attempt to rein in arbitrary fee hikes by private schools. The AAP leader demanded the issuance of an order halting all fee hikes and new charges introduced by private schools for the current academic year. 'Any school that has already collected increased fees should be directed to refund excess amount immediately... Draft Bill must be placed in public domain for feedback from all stakeholders & only then be tabled in Delhi Assembly,' Atishi said. 'The Delhi government has neither shared any details of any consultative process through which the aforesaid bill was drafted, nor the draft bill has been shared with the public so far. Till now, we only know what is being reported in the media, we have no authentic document to refer and comment upon,' Atishi said.
