China show their might by sweeping four out of five Malaysian Masters titles

PETALING JAYA: China underlined their strength in depth by sweeping four out of five titles at the Malaysian Masters in Bukit Jalil on Sunday (May 25). The world powerhouse dominated the finals day at the Axiata Arena, with victories in the men's and women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles events. The winning run began in the mixed doubles, where Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping edged top seeds Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin 21-17, 14-21, 21-16 in an all-China final. It was a similar story in the women's singles, where top seed Wang Zhiyi came from behind to beat compatriot Han Yue 13-21, 21-13, 21-18. The dominance continued in the men's singles as Li Shifeng brought more cheers to the Chinese camp with a commanding 21-11, 21-9 win over India's K. Srikanth, who had made an impressive run from the qualifying rounds. China wrapped up the day with a fourth title in the women's doubles when Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning outplayed Jia Yifan-Zhang Shuxian 21-17, 21-18 in yet another all-China affair.

Defending champions China power past Japan to reach Sudirman Cup final

XIAMEN: Defending champions China advanced to the final of badminton's Sudirman Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Japan on Saturday, captivating the home crowd as they close in on a record-extending 14th title. China's world number two mixed doubles pair Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping set the tone, beating Hiroki Midorikawa-Arisa Igarashi 21-11, 21-17 in the opener. Top seed Shi Yu Qi then crushed eighth-ranked Kodai Naraoka 21-8, 21-16 in the men's singles to hand China a 2-0 lead. Japan showed resilience in the women's singles, where Akane Yamaguchi, who had won 21 of her previous 33 encounters with Chen Yu Fei, pushed the Tokyo Games champion to three games but Chen held her nerve to prevail 17-21, 21-9, 21-16. China, who have won the biennial mixed team championship 13 times, will meet either four-times champions South Korea or 1989 winners Indonesia in the final, with the two teams facing off in their semi-final clash later this evening. - Reuters

China end Malaysia's Sudirman Cup hopes in q-finals

PETALING JAYA: Miracles sometimes happen in sport, but not for the national badminton team this time. Malaysia's Sudirman Cup campaign came to an end after they were outclassed 0-3 by defending champions China in the quarter-finals on Friday (May 2). Even before the first serve, it was always going to be an uphill task for Malaysia against the 13-time champions at the Fenghuang Gymnasium in Xiamen, who enjoyed the full backing of a passionate home crowd. Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei gave it their all in an attempt to give Malaysia a positive start, but found Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping too tough to handle. Despite a gritty effort, Tang Jie and Ee Wei went down 17-21, 17-21 in 49 minutes. Men's singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao, who had built momentum after stunning world No. 8 Kodai Naraoka in the group stage, could not replicate the same performance against world No. 1 Shi Yuqi. Jun Hao looked out of sorts and was no match for Yuqi, losing 6-21, 14-21 in 38 minutes as China sealed their second point. Malaysia's final hope, K. Letshanaa, also found the going tough against Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist Chen Yufei and was beaten 8-21, 7-21 in just 30 minutes. The defeat ended Malaysia's hopes of returning with at least a medal, as they had done in the previous two editions in Vantaa (2021) and Suzhou (2023).
