Blunder by Socceroos goalkeeper costs Lens on derby day

Lille have profited from a blunder by Socceroos goalkeeper Maty Ryan to beat northern rival Lens 1-0 at home and move level on points with fourth-placed Nice in Ligue 1. Matias Fernandez-Pardo scored in the 19th minute, albeit with a lot of help from Australian shot stopper. Ryan tried to dribble past Fernandez-Pardo after receiving a routine back pass and ended up getting tackled by him, leading to an open goal for the 20-year-old Belgian winger. Ryan had earlier kept out a second-minute shot from Fernandez-Pardo after he went clean through. Lille and Nice both have 47 points with Nice ahead on goal difference. Third-placed Marseille are only two points ahead of them in the race for a Champions League spot, with seven rounds remaining and the top four qualifying. FERNÁNDEZ-PARDO STEALS THE BALL AND SCORES THE FIRST DERBY GOAL! 🔥🤯 — Ligue 1 English (@Ligue1_ENG) March 30, 2025 Earlier on Sunday, Abdoulaye Toure scored two penalties against his former club as Le Havre beat Nantes 3-2 to claim a vital win in their relegation fight. The 31-year-old was born in Nantes and came through the club's youth academy before playing nearly 150 league games for the club from 2013-21. He scored his penalties either side of a goal for Nantes from Saidou Sow. Moses Simon made it 2-2 shortly after the break, but defender Timothee Pembele grabbed Le Havre's winner in the 88th minute. The victory moved Le Havre into 16th place in the 18-team league, with seven rounds left. Brittany-based Brest withstood a comeback before winning 4-2 at Toulouse. Elsewhere, Rennes won 3-0 at lowly Angers to move closer to mid-table security. Auxerre scored a 1-0 win against rock-bottom Montpellier, which edged them closed toward relegation after a seventh straight defeat. Unbeaten Paris Saint-Germain moved within touching distance of a record-extending 13th league title after overwhelming Saint-Etienne 6-1 on Saturday. PSG only need a draw at home to Angers next weekend to seal the deal.

Spain continue youth recruitment drive with Matias Fernandez-Pardo close to switching allegiance from Belgium

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is continuing its youth recruitment drive after submitting documents that would allow Lille's Matias Fernandez-Pardo to represent the country at international level. The 20-year-old has played for Belgium at youth level but qualifies to play for Spain through his father. He was born in Brussels but has also lived in Spain and has a Spanish passport. Advertisement The RFEF has worked together with Fernandez-Pardo's camp on changing his sporting nationality, and the official documentation has been sent to FIFA to enable the registration process. It is anticipated he will be called up by Spain's Under-21s for March's international break. The RFEF has also contacted the Belgian Football Association to request documents recording the matches Fernandez-Pardo has played at youth level. The registration of Fernandez-Pardo follows Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen, 19, and Leeds United forward Mateo Joseph, 21, committing their international future to Spain last year. Huijsen had represented the Netherlands at youth level, and Joseph had played 10 times for England's Under-20s. GO DEEPER Dean Huijsen and the pass that proves how valuable he is to Bournemouth Fernandez-Pardo joined Lille from Genk in a €12million (£9.96m; $12.6m) move in the summer of 2024, having previously been part of the French club's academy. He has made 12 Ligue 1 appearances this season, providing one goal and one assist. A versatile forward player, the RFEF believes Fernandez-Pardo has great potential. He represented Belgium at youth level between 2020 and 2023 and was also eligible to play for Italy, but told Spanish newspaper Marca in December: 'I want to play for Spain, no doubt.' The changing of Fernandez-Pardo's sporting nationality means he would be unable to change his national team again, as per FIFA regulations. (Valery Hache/AFP via Getty Images)
