Enzo Maresca has made it clear that Enzo Fernández will not be leaving Chelsea, despite recent speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid. The Argentine midfielder had a challenging start at Stamford Bridge following his £106 million move from Benfica two years ago. With the club in a period of transition, Fernández initially found it difficult to live up to expectations. However, under Maresca's guidance, he's started to flourish. Chelsea are "determined" to stop vice-captain Enzo Fernández from leaving the club to join Real Madrid this summer, according to a report. Fernández has overcome early struggles following his record transfer to Stamford Bridge off the back of winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina. At £106.8 million ($143.1 million), he became the most expensive player in Premier League history, later surpassed by teammate Moisés Caicedo. With Chelsea much improved in 2024–25, Fernández has earned plenty of plaudits for his role in midfield. But with such performances, transfer links haven't been far behind. Real Madrid have visions of bolstering their midfield this summer for incoming coach Xabi Alonso, having not replaced Toni Kroos last year and Luka Modrić nearing the end of his career. But The Guardian has reported that Chelsea have "no intention of selling" Fernández, who has emerged alongside a number of other options on Madrid's transfer radar. Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister and Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Larsson are alternatives, although Martin Zubimendi, another target, looks likely to join Arsenal from Real Sociedad instead. The newspaper report notes that there is "no panic" regarding the "noise" and speculation that is surrounded Fernández, and Chelsea will resist efforts from Madrid and others to sign him. The Spanish giants may not even have the necessary funds available, while there is no suggestion that Fernández himself is unhappy, and Chelsea might only consider selling if he were to cause problems internally. Plenty of that noise comes from Spain. AS claims that Fernández is "attracted" to the idea of joining Madrid, with conversations taking place between the club and his representatives prior to joining Chelsea. A price tag of €120 million (£101.2 million, $135.5 million) is reported to be a "starting point" for potential negotiations, although there has been no formal contact over a transfer yet. Alonso's preferred midfield signing is thought to be Bayer Leverkusen no.10 Florian Wirtz, a player he obviously knows extremely well from his time at the BayArena. But whether Madrid go after Wirtz, Fernández or someone else, a big-money signing is thought to require a major sale first, which could push a frustrated Rodrygo further towards the exit. Chelsea have no intention of selling Enzo Fernández and are determined to see off any attempt by Real Madrid to sign the midfielder this summer. Xabi Alonso, who is due to take over from Carlo Ancelotti as Madrid's manager, is looking to add more control to his midfield and Fernández is one of the names on the club's shortlist. The La Liga side are also tracking Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister and Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Larsson. Madrid have considered trying to hijack Arsenal's move for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi but the Premier League side are confident that a deal for the Spain international will be sealed soon. Toni Kroos retired last summer and Luka Modric, 39, is no longer the force of old. Madrid, who are signing the Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen for £50m, want a player who can pull the strings in midfield. Multiple reports in Argentina have claimed that Madrid will push to sign Fernández, who has enjoyed an impressive season for Chelsea. However there is no panic at Stamford Bridge about the noise around the Argentina international, who was signed from Benfica for £106.7m in January 2023. Fernández has captained Chelsea this season, has improved his goalscoring output under the guidance of Enzo Maresca and has a contract that runs until 2032. There is no indication that the 24-year-old, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022, is unhappy at Chelsea. Fernández would need to make a huge fuss to force an exit. There are also doubts over whether Madrid have the funds required to tempt Chelsea into a sale. The situation is similar with Mac Allister, Fernández's international teammate. It is understood that Madrid are huge admirers of Mac Allister but prising him away from Liverpool would be hugely challenging. The former Brighton midfielder, who moved to Anfield in 2023, is a key member of Arne Slot's title-winning side and is likely to be far too expensive for Madrid. Larsson, a 20-year-old Sweden international, represents a more affordable option. The midfielder has scored three goals in 33 appearances in the Bundesliga for Frankfurt this season. Frankfurt have qualified for the Champions League and are canny sellers.
