Ferrari 296 Speciale unveiled with 880 bhp, is the hardcore version of the 296 GTB

Ferrari 296 Speciale features a power increase to 880 hp and significant weight reduction. Ferrari has unveiled the new 296 Speciale in the global market. It is the more hardcore version of the standard model, which is the 296 GTB. The new model will be sold in two body styles - Coupe and Aperta. The brand has added track focused upgrades, more power and reduced the weight as well. Ferrari 296 Speciale: Most powerful RWD Ferrari road car Total power has increased to 880 hp, a 50 hp gain over the GTB, making it the most powerful rear-wheel-drive Ferrari road car to date. Aerodynamic changes are equally significant. Downforce is up 20 per cent compared to the GTB, with 435 kg generated at 250 kmph. Weight reduction has been another major focus. At 60 kg lighter than the GTB, the 296 Speciale features carbon-fibre bodywork, titanium engine parts and a pared-down interior. The result is a weight of just 1,410 kg (coupe), which translates to a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 1.6 kg per horsepower – again, a record for a rear-drive Ferrari. The five aspects that the brand says have been improved are sound, gear shifts, braking, acceleration and lateral grip. The 3.0-litre V6 engine that is turbocharged now puts out 698 bhp. There are electric motors that have a power output of up to 178 bhp and torque is 315 Nm in the Qualify driving mode. Ferrari says the total power output from the combine setup stands at around 878 bhp. It comes mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels only. Because it is a hybrid, there is a battery pack which has a capacity of 7.45 kWh and it has an electric-only range of 25 km. The interior uses a lot of carbon fibre, racing bucket seats and gated design for the gearbox shifter. Ferrari 296 Speciale: What are the acceleration times? Ferrari claims that the 296 Speciale can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 2.8 seconds 200 kmph comes up in 7 seconds. The bodywork on the track-focused car is new to provide better aerodynamics. The newly designed vertical fins at the edges of the bumper enhance wake management and minimize drag; they also feature an upward curve, with the shape of the horizontal surface contributing to increased downforce. These aerodynamic components have been adapted from the 296 Challenge and the FXX K, and are integrated into a cohesive unit in this design. The front of the vehicle features a redesigned duct that facilitates the movement of air from beneath the chassis to above it, a characteristic inspired by the 296 Challenge. Additionally, there are enhanced louvres on the sides, aerodynamic fins at the edges of the bumper, and a significantly more pronounced splitter to improve airflow around and beneath the vehicle. New side winglets are also available. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2024, Best SUVs in India. First Published Date: 30 Apr 2025, 17:07 PM IST

Ferrari unleashes the 296 Speciale

Ferrari has added to the ranks of its track focused models with the new Ferrari 296 Speciale. This is a hardcore evolution of the 296 GTB hybrid. Revealed in Maranello overnight, the 296 Speciale joins the likes of the Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale, and 488 Pista. Billed as the most engaging and agile mid-rear-engined Ferrari berlinetta yet, the 296 Speciale builds on the strengths of the GTB. Ferrari says it not only offers an uptick in performance but also new levels of predictability and driver involvement. Under its svelte skin lies a monstrous 880hp powertrain, a combination of a heavily revised 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 and a boosted electric motor. That's a full 50hp more than the 296 GTB, with 700hp coming from the internal combustion engine alone — the most ever for a rear-drive Ferrari. Read more Ferrari's Once-in-a-Decade F80 Hypercar Is a Sell-Out Ferrari has shaved 60kg off the GTB's kerb weight thanks to the use of carbon fibre and titanium, resulting in a 1.6kg/cv power-to-weight ratio. The aerodynamics package is just as serious. Derived from Ferrari's racing division and tested on the 296 Challenge, the Speciale develops 435kg of downforce at 250km/h — a 20 per cent gain over the GTB. New features include vertical fins on the rear bumper side wings, and a reprogrammed active spoiler that now boasts an intermediate 'Medium Downforce' setting. The front end is just as advanced with an 'aero damper' ducting airflow from beneath the car up through the bonnet, while extensive undertray work improves ground effect and balance. Ferrari says it has enriched the V6's soundtrack. Thanks to redesigned acoustic ducts and a less restrictive exhaust system, the Speciale should sing with even more clarity and volume. The Speciale keeps the GTB's 8-speed dual-clutch transmission but with revised mapping for faster, more aggressive changes which should be especially noticeable when pushing the new extra boost function. This trick feature, lifted from the SF90 XX, temporarily unleashes an electric surge from the motor to aid torque production. Only available in 'Qualify' mode on the eManettino dial, it's designed to deliver maximum performance during the most demanding track sessions. The updated ABS Evo system uses a 6D sensor and predictive algorithms to maintain braking performance and stability, even under extreme lateral loads. A revised suspension setup drops the ride height by 5mm and reduces roll by 13 per cent that should sharpen the 296's already nimble chassis. The electric half of the hybrid system hasn't been left behind, either. With its 7.45kWh battery and uprated motor, the 296 Speciale can still travel up to 25km in full-electric mode. Ferrari 296 Speciale: Faster, Meaner And Lighter

Ferrari 295 Speciale Just when we thought Ferrari's 819bhp 296 GTB hybrid was enough, it dropped its 296 Speciale bombshell. What we have here is an 868bhp car that weighs 60kg less. And that's not all. Ferrari's increased downforce by up to 20 per cent at 150mph. Likewise, it's lower, is more precise through corners and is packed with titanium. If flies in your eyes and the wind through your hair is important, there's a convertible guise, although it's 50kg heavier than the coupe. The turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 hybrid engine remains, but it now uses different boost strategies, inspired by the 296 Challenge car's map, and features forged pistons and titanium crankshafts. The electric motor now produces 177bhp, giving an 868bhp total, trumping the GTB by 49bhp. Ferrari 296 Speciale The 'baby' Ferrari features carbon wheels, bumpers and engine cover, while the internals, springs, exhaust, and various other bits are made from titanium. Similarly, excess metal has been shaved from the crankcase and engine block to save weight, while the turbo's weight has been cut by 1.2kg. This means the Ferrari 296 Speciale Coupe weighs just 1,410kg and the Spider 1,460kg. Ferrari's integrated functional and interesting design changes like an 'aero damper'. This channels air from the front to underneath, then over the hood and windscreen to keep it stable. There are also pressure-relieving vents at the front and batwings at the rear to void air from the backwheels. These changes work with the active rear spoiler, which now features a 'mid' setting, something the GTB never had. 0-to-62mph takes 2.8 seconds, while its top speed is more than 205mph. Ferrari 296 Speciale A new 'Qualify' control strategy manages e-motor boost when existing corners to help keep fast lap times. A nifty boost gauge in the cabin relays how many boost bursts remain. It'll also learn any circuit you're navigating and apply the boost amount accordingly. It's all fancy stuff, but this doesn't mean the Ferrari 296 Speciale is a limited edition car. But you do have to be an active Ferrari customer and have bought a prancing horse within the last five years to place an order. The Ferrari 296 Speciale Coupe will likely cost circa $500,000.
