BREAKING NEWS Caitlin Clark speaks out on dramatic Angel Reese bust-up after shoving rival to floor in WNBA opener

Caitlin Clark insists her shove on Angel Reese was nothing more than a basketball play and by no means 'malicious' after the two WNBA rivals were involved in a furious spat on the court. During a fiery season opener between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky, Clark slapped the Sky forward across the arm after she grabbed an offensive rebound, sending her tumbling to the floor midway through the third quarter. Reese was left incensed by the push, leaping back to her feet and making a beeline for the Fever star before her teammates intervened. Following a replay review, the referees upgraded Clark's foul to a flagrant one much to her astonishment. Caitlin Clark throwing SHADE at Angel Reese LMFAOOO 'It's just a good take foul. Either Angel gets wide open 2 points or we send them to the free throw line. Nothing malicious about it…EVERY BASKETBALL PLAYER LNOWS THAT' 😂😂😂 — Hater Report (@HaterReport_) May 17, 2025 During an in-game interview with ESPN, the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year stressed that she was simply doing what every basketball player would do in the same situation. 'It's just a good take foul,' Clark said. 'You know, either Angel gets a wide open two points, or we send them to the free-throw line. 'Nothing malicious about it. It's just a good take foul. Every basketball player knows that.'

Caitlin Clark receives flagrant foul after hard challenge on Angel Reese, sparking skirmish

(Photo by) The first meeting of the year between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky did not disappoint. Rising emotions in the Midwestern rivalry led to a scuffle between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese late in the third quarter. Things started with Clark committing a clear foul on Reese, stripping Reese of the ball and giving her enough of a push to send her off-balance. Reese was not happy about the play, confronting Clark with Aliyah Boston trying to hold her back. Advertisement After review, Clark was assessed a flagrant foul for the extra contact. Reese and Boston were given off-setting technical fouls for the skirmish after the foul. Reese was given two free throws as a result of Clark's flagrant, making one of the two attempts. At the quarter break, Clark told the ESPN broadcast that her only intention was to stop Reese from scoring. Reese had a wide-open path to the basket prior to Clark's foul, which was intended as a "take foul" — a strategic foul meant to stop a fastbreak or an open opportunity. Clark was seen speaking to the officials after the foul was assessed, trying to argue that the play was not a flagrant. "It's just a good take foul," Clark told ESPN. "Either Angel gets a wide open two points or we send 'em to the free throw line. Nothing malicious about it. It's just a good take foul, every basketball player knows that."

Caitlin Clark issued flagrant foul for hacking Angel Reese in Fever-Sky season opener

Follow The Athletic's live coverage of Fever-Sky. The years-long rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese added another moment Saturday. Clark knocked Reese to the floor midway through the third quarter of the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky's season opener, a play that led to Clark's first career flagrant foul. Advertisement The foul occurred as Reese went up for a layup and Clark appeared to wrap her up to prevent the shot. Reese went sprawling to the floor, and replays showed Clark extended her arms upon making contact. Reese jumped to her feet and began yelling toward Clark as the Fever guard walked in the opposite direction, and Reese and Fever forward Aliyah Boston received technical fouls after the review. Clark said she fouled Reese to prevent an open layup and send her to the free-throw line. 'Nothing malicious about it. It was just a good take foul. Every basketball player knows that,' Clark told ESPN after the third quarter. Caitlin Clark received a flagrant foul on this play. After Reese made one of her free throws and Chicago guard Courtney Vandersloot made a layup, the Fever finished the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 20-point lead into the fourth. Through three quarters, Clark had 14 points, seven rebounds and led all players with eight assists. Reese had a game-high 15 rebounds to go with 10 points on 12 shots. Clark and Reese's careers have been intertwined since 2023, when Reese's LSU defeated Clark's Iowa in the national championship game. As rookies last season, Reese committed a flagrant foul on Clark in their teams' second matchup, which wound up being a 91-83 Fever victory. As Clark drove to the basket in the third quarter, Reese tried to block Clark's shot but hit her in the head. Unlike this year, when both players had to be separated, last season's hard foul didn't come with any extracurriculars. Clark went to the bench as the play was reviewed, while Reese huddled with her teammates. Clark later said the hard foul was 'just a part of basketball.' This story will be updated.
