MEPs: EP's grand coalition with backing from Tisza and DK voted to continue the war

The EP, in a plenary session on Wednesday, held a vote on the legislative assembly's plans regarding the 2026 European Union budget. The MEP group of the ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrat alliance said on Wednesday that the European Parliament's 'grand coalition', with the backing of Hungary's opposition Tisza and Democratic Coalition (DK) parties, voted to continue the war. The MEP group said in a statement that the EP, in a plenary session on Wednesday, held a vote on the legislative assembly's plans regarding the 2026 European Union budget. They cited Fidesz MEP Tamás Deutsch as saying that the Patriots for Europe (PfE) group and Fidesz and the Christian Democrats had rejected the 'pro-war' parliamentary text, which they said had also 'attacked member states' sovereignty, supported illegal migration and spread gender madness'. 'The grand coalition of parties of Péter Magyar, [Ferenc] Gyurcsany and Momentum in Brussels, on the other hand, wants to allocate further billions of euros to the war, the Soros organisations which have been deemed ineligible for US funding, the left-liberal media and political activists,' the statement said. These opposition parties, the group added, also favored the implementation of the EU's migration pact and continued to force the Green Deal. They cited Deutsch as saying that the EP resolution backed by the 'Brussels grand coalition', Tisza and DK called for ensuring the implementation of the asylum and migration pact and the 'continuation of the rule-of-law jihad'. The resolution, he added, also called for more military aid for Ukraine. Deutsch said the Hungarian opposition parties had voted down the PfE group's proposals, including one calling for the European Commission to withdraw a 'discriminatory decision' that excludes Hungarian universities and researchers from the EU's Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe programmes. They had also rejected a proposal to unfreeze EU funds for Hungary, he said.

MEPs: Péter Magyar is trying to deny pro-war support through blatant lies

The EP proposal condemns Hungary "for its pro-peace stance" and for vetoing earlier this month the European leaders' proposal to send weapons to Ukraine. MEPs of Hungary's ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrat parties said on Monday that Péter Magyar, the leader of the opposition Tisza Party, 'is trying to deny that he was signatory to a pro-war proposal by the European Parliament's grand coalition,' calling the proposal 'the roughest escalation plan'. The EP's 'left-liberal majority' seeks to send further weapons to Ukraine and demands financing from member states, the statement said, adding that 'these proposals would contribute to prolonging the horrors of the war in Ukraine and would make Hungarian families pay for them,' they said in a statement. The EP proposal condemns Hungary 'for its pro-peace stance' and for vetoing earlier this month the European leaders' proposal to send weapons to Ukraine, the statement said. The draft it said would also eliminate 'the right of member states to a unanimous decision' and would introduce decision-making by a simple majority 'even in foreign policy matters crucial from the point of view of national sovereignty'. The proposal would involve a 'serious risk of escalation' through supporting the use of Western weapons on Russian territory and rolling out European military training to Ukraine, the statement said, adding that 'the EU makes further and further declarations of its support for war'. 'After we pointed out that he was among the signatories, Péter Magyar is trying to deny all … trying to deny through blatant lies and accusation the reality that he supports continuing the war,' the MEPs said.

Deutsch: Fidesz favors the efficient use of EU funding instead of using them for ‘power aims'

Red tape for small and medium-sized enterprises should be reduced and environmental protection measures should not hinder economic performance and competitiveness. Tamás Deutsch, the head of the Fidesz-Christian Democrat European Parliament group, said on Thursday that Fidesz and the Patriots have put forward amendment proposals 'against the power aims' of Brussels and in favor of increasing the efficient use of EU funding, ensuring that cohesion funds are not reduced in the next multiannual budget. The EP Committee on Regional Development (REGI) discussed Deutsch's proposals for EU development funding made in his capacity as the development spokesman for the Patriots for Europe group, the Fidesz-Christian Democrat delegation said in a statement in connection with the ninth cohesion report. He said the EU had used cohesion funds as a tool for political blackmail, and his amendment put forward legal regulation aimed at 'putting an end to this shameful Brussels practice' and ensuring that funding helped less developed regions in the process of catching up. Further, red tape for small and medium-sized enterprises should be reduced and environmental protection measures should not hinder economic performance and competitiveness, he added. Also, the statement said the proposals aim to provide training and job opportunities for farmers, especially those of the new generation. Regarding the MFF after 2028, Deutsch insisted the European Commission strove to hand itself even more powers, while the Fidesz-Christian Democrat EP group wanted an EU budget aimed at boosting European competitiveness, preserving support for the regions and European agriculture, and guaranteeing the sovereignty of member states.

PM Orbán: The ideology that failed in Washington still rules in Brussels

The prime minister said the new US president's inauguration meant that "proponents of the global liberal ideology have lost the capital of the greatest power in the Western world." Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's address to a meeting of the ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrat parties in Balatonfüred, in western Hungary, focused on a 'new international situation created by the inauguration of Donald Trump', Magyar Nemzet reported online late on Tuesday. In his address, PM Orbán said the new US president's inauguration meant that 'proponents of the global liberal ideology have lost the capital of the greatest power in the Western world.' The new US administration is 'patriotic and anti-migration, advocating a traditional, family-based thinking rather than the gender ideology,' the paper quoted Orban as saying. 'A friendly government treating Hungary as a partner has entered office,' PM Orbán stressed, adding that it made it possible for the country to 'think big'. 'For the past 15 years we were sailing against head-wind, and finally we have back-wind,' he said. 'The Soros network has lost Washington and the new administration has started eliminating the network, which means it will no longer be raining dollars … Soros can only rely on Brussels and the European taxpayers' money,' PM Orbán said. The prime minister warned, however, that 'the ideology that failed in Washington, still rules in Brussels … they treat Hungary as an enemy; Hungary's real political adversaries are in Brussels.' 'They want to oust the patriotic government and set up a puppet government, they seek to tell us what we Hungarians are allowed to do and what we must not … they are the empire and we are the rebels to prevent that,' PM Orbán said. 'Moreover, we will cooperate with those with a similar mindset in Europe and America, and after Washington, we will occupy Brussels, too,' he added. Concerning Ukraine, PM Orbán said its EU integration would put an end to direct subsidies for Hungarian farmers, and 'those monies would be sent to Ukraine.' The US will no longer finance Ukraine and 'Brussels seeks to make Europeans, including us Hungarians pay for that,' he said, adding that 'a proposal has already been tabled that we Hungarians should give Ukraine an annual 200 billion forints.' 'For the time being, Ukraine has not met any criteria for its EU accession, therefore it is out of the question,' he said. Meanwhile, he said that 'Trump and Musk have uncovered the network of political corruption of Soros and the Democrats that distributed billions of dollars in the media and among international organisations, also in Hungary, but they will no longer pay rolling dollars to their mercenaries in Hungary.' 'Political corruption is when one is paid to write what they are requested,' PM Orbán said, and asked the deputies to pass strict laws and 'ban from Hungary all those that received from those funds.' 'The empire has lost a battle in Washington and is losing the war … they want to hit back in Hungary in 2026 … they have hired new troops, they will come back with a new army. We must stand ready and win. This year will be that of a breakthrough,' he said. Concerning recent talks between the US and Russia, PM Orbán said that 'Europe has been left out … Hungary continues to support a ceasefire and peace.'
