New York mayoral race: Andrew Cuomo to run for office as independent after losing primaries to Zohran Mmadani?

Zohran Mamdani (left) and Andrew Cuomo (AP) Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is reportedly planning to run as an independent candidate in the New York City mayoral race, just days after losing the Democratic primary to socialist assemblyman Zohran Mamdani. Multiple news outlets have reported that 67-year-old Cuomo, who comes from a prominent political lineage in New York, does not plan to drop out of the race despite conceding the Democratic primary to democratic Mamdani. Mamdani is now considered the frontrunner and could become the city's first Muslim and Indian-origin mayor in the November election. Cuomo is now anticipated to remain in the race as an independent candidate under the 'Fight and Deliver' ballot line. However, he has yet to decide if he will actively campaign in the months ahead. The former governor, who resigned in 2021 amid accusations of sexual harassment and workplace bullying, now finds himself alongside embattled incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat who has also rebranded his re-election bid as an independent campaign. New York City's political landscape was shaken earlier this week when Cuomo, who had once held a 20-point lead over Mamdani in the primary, fell seven points behind. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The upset came after a well-organized push from Mamdani's campaign energized younger voters who typically don't participate in mayoral primaries. In an effort to ease worries within the business community about his policies, which includes tax increases on the wealthy, rent freezes, and free city services, 33-year-old Mamdani told ABC News this week that 'a new generation of leadership is needed.' Despite his primary victory, Mamdani has faced skepticism from prominent figures on Wall Street. 'It's officially hot commie summer,' hedge fund billionaire Dan Loeb posted on X following Mamdani's win. Although reports indicate Cuomo is moving forward with an independent run, he has until the end of Friday to officially withdraw from the 'Fight and Deliver' ballot line, according to the New York State board of elections calendar. Speaking to CNN on Thursday, Mamdani said he's 'not at all' concerned about Cuomo entering the race as an independent, noting they already competed once and that it went 'pretty well' for him. Meanwhile, the race has drawn heated rhetoric from outside New York as well. Republican Congressman Andy Ogles of Tennessee called for Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, to be deported and stripped of his US citizenship. In a post on X, Ogles wrote: 'Zohran 'little muhammad' Mamdani is an antisemitic, socialist, communist who will destroy the great City of New York. He needs to be DEPORTED. Which is why I am calling for him to be subject to denaturalization proceedings.'

Cuomo to stay on New York City mayoral ballot in November on independent line: Source

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo will stay on the New York City mayoral ballot in November on the independent ballot line that he qualified for, a source close to the campaign confirmed to ABC News. Cuomo qualified in May to run on the "Fight and Deliver" ballot line in the general election through an independent nominating petition submitted to the New York City Board of Elections, which at the time he said was meant to reach voters disillusioned with the Democratic Party. He would have been allowed to appear on both the Democratic Party and "Fight and Deliver" lines on the general election ballot if he had won the Democratic primary. CNN first reported on Thursday night that Cuomo, who conceded to state assemblymember Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor on Tuesday, would not withdraw from the independent ballot line but had not yet decided whether to actively campaign in the coming months. In a speech to supporters Tuesday night, Cuomo told supporters, "Tonight was not our night; tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani's night… He deserved it. He won. We're going to take a look and make some decisions." Candidates have until the end of Friday, June 27 to withdraw from running on an independent ballot line they qualified for, according to the New York State Board of Elections calendar. A source close to the campaign told ABC News on Thursday that the former governor is looking at all of the data, including that the New York City Board of Elections would only start releasing ranked-choice voting tabulations on July 1. Cuomo told CBS 2 New York on Wednesday, "So I have that independent line. I qualified for that. And I'm on that line in November. And we're going to be looking at the numbers that come in from the primary. And then we have to look at the landscape in the general election, which is a totally different landscape." He added later, "We'll take it one step at a time because we haven't even gotten the [full] numbers yet from the primary election, and we have some time." Cuomo's run for mayor comes four years after he resigned as governor after several women accused him of sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct. He has denied the allegations and recently told The New York Times he regrets resigning. On Thursday, incumbent Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, who's also running as an independent in the general election, officially kicked off his reelection campaign.

Andrew Cuomo will run on independent ‘Fight and Deliver' ballot line if he doesn't win NYC Dem primary

Andrew Cuomo plans to run on a second independent 'Fight and Deliver' ballot line in the general election for mayor, regardless of whether he wins the Democratic primary. 'It's an insurance policy,' a source close to the campaign said. A second ballot line would help Cuomo win more votes if he wins the Dem nomination and the left wing Working Families Party runs a rival Democrat — Zohran Mamdani or Brad Lander — splintering the Democratic vote. Advertisement If Mamdani wins the Dem nomination, Cuomo could try to win as an independent candidate, just as incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is attempting to do. 'It's a smart move,' the source said. The Cuomo backer said Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa is going to get at least 30% of the vote, and Adams could get at least 10% as an independent candidate.
